Project Title: Clinicians in Schools
Project Description:

CBNO seeks $10,000 in program support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to support our "Clinicians in Schools” Project, which delivers evidence-based, trauma-focused mental health counseling to students ages 5-18 across 16 New Orleans public schools. In New Orleans, children face trauma at rates far exceeding national averages, with 40% having been exposed to violent crime. In 2025, among the approximately 300 children served in our school-based program:
25% witnessed domestic violence;
19% lost a loved one to homicide;
17% survived sexual abuse; and
16% experienced physical abuse

Research shows that untreated trauma increases the risk of violence, academic failure, and unemployment – but also that children can recover when they receive timely, evidence-based care. Yet, 62% of New Orleans public schools report lacking adequate mental health resources. CBNO embeds licensed clinicians directly into schools to provide trauma-informed mental health counseling to students, eliminating barriers like cost, transportation, and stigma. All services are provided at no cost. Because more than 50% of mental health conditions emerge before age 14, early intervention is essential. Our project has two goals: 1) increase access and engagement in evidence-based treatments; and 2) reduce trauma symptoms and increase wellness for those who are served by providing culturally responsive and evidence-based treatments.

Funding will cover 10% of the costs of providing one clinician embedded within our portfolio of 16 New Orleans public schools, including required supervision.

CBNO has a proven record of success and has operated continuously for over 130 years. Typically, at least 75% of youth completing our mental health services experience a reduction in post-traumatic stress symptoms as measured through nationally validated pre and post treatment assessment instruments. Our "Clinicians in Schools” program serves approximately 400 children and their family members annually.

Project Title: 2026-2027 Access for All
Project Description:

While theater can play a significant and positive role in shaping a young person’s academic achievement, career success, health, and wellbeing, many students throughout Southeastern Wisconsin have limited access to it—due to the lack of arts specialists in schools, budget cuts, and the additional financial, transportation, and logistical challenges that unfortunately prevent them and their families from attending theater performances and enrolling in arts programs.

Since 2004, First Stage has been removing barriers and ensuring access to our transformative theater experiences for Southeastern Wisconsin’s historically under-resourced youth and families through our Access for All program. Funds would go to helping to remove barriers and ensure access in the following ways:

Professional Theater Productions:
-Access for All families are eligible to purchase tickets for any production at a 70% discount
-We provide discounted tickets to our nonprofit partners (e.g., Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Club, La Casa de Esperanza, Penfield Montessori, Ronald McDonald House, and more)

Theater Academy Classes:
-We provide financial aid awards of up to 85% coverage, healthy snacks, Academy t-shirts, and transportation, as needed.

Theater in Education Workshops:
-We provide our Theater in Education programs, such as Field Trip Packages or Arts-Integrated Workshops, at highly subsidized rates to historically under-resourced schools.

Through Access for All, First Stage provides theater experiences to about 15,000 young people and families annually for little or no cost to them. As schools and organizations are forced to spend less on the arts, First Stage fills our community’s need for creativity, enrichment, and connection.

Project Title: Hope Harbor Program for At-Risk, Homeless Teens
Project Description:

Hope Harbor is the only long-term, privately funded, preventative youth shelter in the state of California. Teens in our program come from low-to-moderate income households with family members who struggle with addiction, abuse, poverty, incarceration, food insecurity, mental health issues, suicidal thoughts, and low education levels. They are on the precipice of devolving into a life of homelessness, human trafficking, criminalization, addiction, and gang violence.

Hope Harbor’s goal is to transform the lives of at-risk youth and provide them with the necessary tools to succeed and achieve their full potentials. We do this through:
• Mental Health Evaluation and Treatment: Youth receive mental health evaluations, 1:1 case management, and weekly individual, family, and crisis counseling from a licensed clinical therapist.

• Individual Academic Planning: Each teen receives an academic plan tailored to their needs that can include credit recovery, tutoring, school attendance, and college planning.

• Healthy Living: Teens learn how to engage in healthy living and gain valuable life skills, including cooking, establishing a routine, financial literacy, and self-esteem building.

• Comprehensive Care: Youth are provided with safe shelter, nutritious meals daily, and comprehensive health care. They also engage in physical fitness, nutrition education, and music and art therapy.

Hope Harbor is unique among youth shelters in several fundamental ways that significantly contribute to our program success. Most youth shelters offer short-term care, whereas the Hope Harbor program lasts for 12-18 months, ensuring that teens have adequate time to address the root causes of their crises and develop new coping strategies. Instead of a rotational shift of staff, the two Hope Harbor houses are run by house parents and operate like a family home. The difference could not be more impactful. The house parents offer a consistent, nurturing presence which fosters a trusting relationship between the house parent and teen and effectuates change.

Total Project Budget: $622,319

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Hope Harbor operates debt-free, is 100% privately funded, and receives no government funds while owning the two homes that serve our clients. With 40 years of history serving our community, Hope Harbor has a diversified and stable funding base. We receive support from foundation grants, corporate donations, individual gifts, in-kind donations, and ongoing fundraising activities from community partnerships. Funding for Hope Harbor is sustained through a diverse donor base of annual donors. To date, funding has been committed by the Tustin Community Foundation, Dhont Family Foundation, Linden Family Foundation, O.L. Halsell Foundation, and Wal-Mart. Additional funding is actively being sought from private foundations, corporate partners, and individual donors to expand critical, life-changing services for at-risk, homeless teens.

Today’s Date: March 25, 2026
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: BRYC’s 2027 Senior College Tour
Project Description:

Since 2009, the Baton Rouge Youth Coalition (BRYC) has helped lower-income teens excel in high school and pursue strong-fit, affordable postsecondary pathways that promote economic mobility. In 2026–2027, we will serve ~1,000 8th–12th-graders and 1,050 alumni. BRYC graduates boast an 84% college persistence rate — 5.5X the national average for lower-income students — and have been awarded 376 degrees and $100+ million in scholarships. Alongside proven self-regulation, ACT, financial literacy, and college admissions programs, BRYC also provides tutoring, counseling, transportation, food, and direct aid, as well as access to social capital and experiences more affluent families can easily afford for their children.

One such experience is a college tour. Visiting campuses before making a final selection is especially valuable for first-generation students who cannot draw on family members’ experiences to prepare for college life. Tours let Fellows immerse themselves in a campus environment — attending classes, meeting professors and students, exploring housing and surrounding geography — before making one of the most important decisions of their lives.

BRYC is committed to ensuring Fellows not only gain admission to their postsecondary institution of choice, but are positioned to succeed once enrolled. We humbly request that the Hermanowski Family Foundation contribute $10,000 to our 2027 Senior College Tour. Not including staff time, BRYC expends ~$250 per Fellow for overnight tours, covering expenses for 50 Fellows, the maximum we can safely chaperone. Fellows must be in good standing to participate. BRYC’s Senior Team plans all tour components: transportation, meals, guides, info sessions, cultural activities, and visits with BRYC alumni enrolled at or graduated from each institution. We also support Fellows in attending diversity visits and other on-campus initiatives.

If funded, 50 seniors will tour multiple campuses next year, inspiring informed decisions that yield long-term success. We thank the Foundation for its consideration!

Project Title: ProKids Launch Program: Best Interest Advocacy for Youth 14+ in the Hamilton County, Ohio Child Protection System
Project Description:

According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Ohio has the third‑largest population of youth ages 14–21 in foster care, behind only California and Texas.

The University of Cincinnati’s Economic Center estimates that young people aging out of foster care in Hamilton County, Ohio cost residents $17.7 million each year due to increased rates of incarceration, unemployment, homelessness, mental health challenges, early parenthood, and reduced lifetime earnings. On average, each young person who ages out generates roughly $300,000 in long‑term social costs. This is where Launch comes in.

Launch is a best interest advocacy program that addresses the needs of youth 14+ who are at risk of aging out of foster care without a permanent home – focusing on high school graduation, planning for adulthood, and self-sufficiency. Advocacy is provided through case management, with each young person assigned a CASA Manager, CASA Volunteer, and Attorney. The CASA Manager is an expert in the child protection system (assessments, services, etc.), the CASA Volunteer becomes the expert about the individual child and their needs, and the attorney is an expert in child protection law.

The goal of Launch is to help young people find stable, supportive homes rather than aging out of care. For those who do age out, Launch equips them with the knowledge, resources, and relationships needed to build a strong support system. Launch is also focused on high school graduation/GED attainment, employment, post‑secondary education, essential life skills, and financial management.
At the center of this work is the CASA Volunteer, often the most consistent adult in a young person’s life. Volunteers help youth identify needs, access services, and develop a comprehensive transition plan. They promote self‑advocacy, self‑sufficiency, and active participation in every step toward adulthood, supporting and preparing youth as they move toward independence.

Project Title: Moffitt Explorers: Building the Future Healthcare Workforce Through Paid Research Internships
Project Description:

Florida faces a growing shortage of skilled healthcare and research professionals, particularly in oncology, at a time when demand for cancer care continues to rise. Building a strong, diverse workforce pipeline requires early, meaningful exposure to these careers, especially for students from medically underserved communities.

Moffitt Explorers addresses this need by engaging middle and high school students in hands-on learning, mentorship, and real-world experiences in biomedical science and healthcare. Students begin their journey through interactive workshops, school visits, career panels, and immersive tours of Moffitt Cancer Center, where they explore research labs, observe clinical environments, and connect with professionals across a wide range of roles.

The cornerstone of this pipeline is the AIM-HI Summer Research Internship, a 6-week paid experience that allows high school students to work alongside Moffitt faculty on cutting-edge projects, including applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in healthcare. By providing stipends, the program removes financial barriers that often prevent talented students from participating in advanced learning experiences.

This tiered approach, early exposure followed by paid, hands-on research, creates a clear pathway into high-demand healthcare careers. Students gain technical skills, build confidence, and develop lasting mentorship relationships that support their long-term academic and career goals.
Funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will directly support student stipends and program materials, expanding access to these transformative experiences and strengthening a sustainable pipeline of future healthcare professionals in the Tampa Bay region.

Project Title: Pasitos Playgroups
Project Description:

Sonoma CAN is a 501(c)(3) organization with over 60 years in the Sonoma County community and over 20 years of experience implementing the Pasitos program. Pasitos addresses the critical school readiness gap through a set curriculum and 16-18 weekly parent playgroup sessions.

While 45% of white children in Sonoma county enter school ready to succeed, only 24% of Latino children meet the same benchmarks (READY Report 23-24). Current data shows a 23% proficiency gap in 3rd grade reading between Latino and White students statewide, emphasizing the critical need for early, culturally responsive intervention in Spanish-speaking households. It is also important to note the shifting demographics in that 25.1% of all kindergarteners entering Sonoma County schools list Spanish as their primary home language.

This request of $10,000 will support the continuation of the program across 8 sites in Sonoma County. We utilize a two-generation or whole family approach to serve over 200 families annually, specifically focusing on children 2 ½ -4 who are not enrolled in a formal childcare or early learning center. The curriculum is provided in Spanish and covers; 1)Training parents as their child’s first and most important teacher, 2) Education on child development, language -rich environments, and positive discipline and 3) Modeling behaviors like daily reading and establishing routines. Past program success shows that prior to participation, 29% of parents reported reading 5 or more times per week, and after participation, 73% read 5 or more times per week.

Our programs are led by qualified professionals. Lead staff hold documented post-secondary units in Early Childhood Education and have completed foundational training in play-based learning to ensure high-quality, evidence based instruction. We maintain robust fiscal and data management systems and are uniquely positioned to manage the administrative and programmatic requirements of grant deliverables.

Project Title: Girls to Graduates: Building College Pathways in El Paso
Project Description:

This grant will support the expansion of college readiness programming for students served by the Young Women’s Preparatory Network, the nonprofit partner to the Young Women’s STEAM Academy and Young Women’s Leadership Academy. Together, these campuses serve 750 female students in grades 6–12, the majority of whom are low-income, first-generation college-bound, and from minority backgrounds. Our students are bilingual, resilient, and emerging leaders with tremendous potential.

Funding will allow us to deepen and expand a proven, comprehensive college readiness model that begins in 6th grade and continues through high school graduation. Programming includes academic advising, college and career exploration, application and financial aid support, leadership development, and family engagement designed to ensure parents understand the college-going process.

What we do works. Our schools maintain a 100% high school graduation rate, and every senior has been accepted to at least one four-year college. These outcomes are not by chance – they are the result of intentional, sustained support provided over seven years. Our alumni success further demonstrates the strength of this model, as graduates persist in college and return to contribute to our community.

With this investment, we will expand access to critical college readiness resources, strengthen individualized support for students, and enhance programming that equips young women with the knowledge and confidence to succeed in higher education. By investing in these students, this project is not only opening doors to college- it is helping build a pipeline of educated, empowered young women who will shape the future El Paso and beyond.
