Project Title: Clinicians in Schools
Project Description:

CBNO seeks $10,000 in program support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to support our "Clinicians in Schools” Project, which delivers evidence-based, trauma-focused mental health counseling to students ages 5-18 across 16 New Orleans public schools. In New Orleans, children face trauma at rates far exceeding national averages, with 40% having been exposed to violent crime. In 2025, among the approximately 300 children served in our school-based program:
25% witnessed domestic violence;
19% lost a loved one to homicide;
17% survived sexual abuse; and
16% experienced physical abuse

Research shows that untreated trauma increases the risk of violence, academic failure, and unemployment – but also that children can recover when they receive timely, evidence-based care. Yet, 62% of New Orleans public schools report lacking adequate mental health resources. CBNO embeds licensed clinicians directly into schools to provide trauma-informed mental health counseling to students, eliminating barriers like cost, transportation, and stigma. All services are provided at no cost. Because more than 50% of mental health conditions emerge before age 14, early intervention is essential. Our project has two goals: 1) increase access and engagement in evidence-based treatments; and 2) reduce trauma symptoms and increase wellness for those who are served by providing culturally responsive and evidence-based treatments.

Funding will cover 10% of the costs of providing one clinician embedded within our portfolio of 16 New Orleans public schools, including required supervision.

CBNO has a proven record of success and has operated continuously for over 130 years. Typically, at least 75% of youth completing our mental health services experience a reduction in post-traumatic stress symptoms as measured through nationally validated pre and post treatment assessment instruments. Our "Clinicians in Schools” program serves approximately 400 children and their family members annually.
