Project Title: Pasitos Playgroups
Project Description:

Sonoma CAN is a 501(c)(3) organization with over 60 years in the Sonoma County community and over 20 years of experience implementing the Pasitos program. Pasitos addresses the critical school readiness gap through a set curriculum and 16-18 weekly parent playgroup sessions.

While 45% of white children in Sonoma county enter school ready to succeed, only 24% of Latino children meet the same benchmarks (READY Report 23-24). Current data shows a 23% proficiency gap in 3rd grade reading between Latino and White students statewide, emphasizing the critical need for early, culturally responsive intervention in Spanish-speaking households. It is also important to note the shifting demographics in that 25.1% of all kindergarteners entering Sonoma County schools list Spanish as their primary home language.

This request of $10,000 will support the continuation of the program across 8 sites in Sonoma County. We utilize a two-generation or whole family approach to serve over 200 families annually, specifically focusing on children 2 ½ -4 who are not enrolled in a formal childcare or early learning center. The curriculum is provided in Spanish and covers; 1)Training parents as their child’s first and most important teacher, 2) Education on child development, language -rich environments, and positive discipline and 3) Modeling behaviors like daily reading and establishing routines. Past program success shows that prior to participation, 29% of parents reported reading 5 or more times per week, and after participation, 73% read 5 or more times per week.

Our programs are led by qualified professionals. Lead staff hold documented post-secondary units in Early Childhood Education and have completed foundational training in play-based learning to ensure high-quality, evidence based instruction. We maintain robust fiscal and data management systems and are uniquely positioned to manage the administrative and programmatic requirements of grant deliverables.
