Project Title: Moffitt Explorers: Building the Future Healthcare Workforce Through Paid Research Internships
Project Description:

Florida faces a growing shortage of skilled healthcare and research professionals, particularly in oncology, at a time when demand for cancer care continues to rise. Building a strong, diverse workforce pipeline requires early, meaningful exposure to these careers, especially for students from medically underserved communities.

Moffitt Explorers addresses this need by engaging middle and high school students in hands-on learning, mentorship, and real-world experiences in biomedical science and healthcare. Students begin their journey through interactive workshops, school visits, career panels, and immersive tours of Moffitt Cancer Center, where they explore research labs, observe clinical environments, and connect with professionals across a wide range of roles.

The cornerstone of this pipeline is the AIM-HI Summer Research Internship, a 6-week paid experience that allows high school students to work alongside Moffitt faculty on cutting-edge projects, including applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in healthcare. By providing stipends, the program removes financial barriers that often prevent talented students from participating in advanced learning experiences.

This tiered approach, early exposure followed by paid, hands-on research, creates a clear pathway into high-demand healthcare careers. Students gain technical skills, build confidence, and develop lasting mentorship relationships that support their long-term academic and career goals.
Funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will directly support student stipends and program materials, expanding access to these transformative experiences and strengthening a sustainable pipeline of future healthcare professionals in the Tampa Bay region.

Total Project Budget: $30,000
