Project Title: Virginia College Mentors Helping Little Buddies Go from Good to Great
Project Description:

College Mentors for Kids connects Virginia college students with underserved youth in grades 1-6 through weekly on-campus activities that inspire growth, confidence, and brighter futures. By fostering these one-on-one relationships, we create a dual impact that benefits both children and their college student mentors. Our four Virginia chapters include James Madison University, Radford University, University of Virginia, and Virginia Tech.

460 college students mentor 350 first through sixth graders (little buddies) on site at all four Virginia campuses. Kids visit the campus once a week after school during the academic year (15-17 times) to participate in activities with their mentors that focus on higher education and careers, culture and diversity, and community service. Activities draw upon the unique resources of the campus.

We have three program goals:

1. Contribute to positive youth development through mentoring relationships.
2. Build knowledge and aspirations for the future through structured activities.
3. Increase community engagement among college student volunteers through mentoring relationships and leadership opportunities.

Our 2026-27 success metrics for the Virginia chapters are:

1. An estimated 400 little buddies will participate in weekly activities with their mentors.
2. 500 college student volunteers will be engaged as college student leaders/mentors.

Our key outcomes for the University of Virginia chapter and all chapters include:

1. Little buddies increase or maintain high self-efficacy and self-esteem.
2. Children display prosocial behaviors such as being helpful and cooperative.
3. Children gain awareness of different careers and future expectations.
4. Little buddies become comfortable and familiar with a college campus.
5. College student mentors increase their civic engagement, communication and leadership skills, and feelings of compassion and altruism.

Our long-term outcomes/impacts include little buddies graduating from high school, avoiding the justice system, following the path to post-secondary education, and volunteering for their communities, all at higher rates than their peers.

Project Title: Youth Playground
Project Description:

This project will establish a developmentally appropriate park designed for children ages 2-6 serving the Winnebago community. The park will provide a safe, accessible, and culturally supportive environment where young children can engage in active play during the most critical years of growth and development. Early childhood is a foundational period for cognitive, physical, emotional, and social development. A dedicated park space supports the development of gross motor skills, coordination, and strength through climbing, running and interactive equipment. It also promotes social emotional growth by encouraging cooperative play, problem solving, communication, and the development of self-confidence. Providing a safe outdoor space heals reduce sedentary behavior, supports overall physical health, and contributes to improved mental well-being. Within Tribal communities, spaces that foster safe gathering and positive childhood experiences are especially meaningful. This park will not only serve as a recreational area, but as a community asset that strengthens family engagement, cultural connection, and intergenerational interaction. By investing in early childhood focused infrastructure, the Winnebago Health Foundation reinforces its commitment to nurturing the next generation in a setting that reflects community values and priorities. The purpose of this project is to promote health, wellness, and equitable access to safe recreational opportunities for young children and families. This park will be open and accessible to the community, removing financial barriers and ensuring that all families can benefit. It addresses a demonstrated need for age-appropriate recreational infrastructure and contributes to long-term public health outcomes.

Project Title: Feeding The Future
Project Description:

Currently, in Louisiana, there is a pressing need for assistance designed to provide children facing food insecurity
with balanced and nutritious diets. Research from Feeding America underlines this need, with Louisiana ranking
among the top three states for child hunger and child poverty. During summer and holiday breaks, school
cafeterias are closed, leaving many children without their only guaranteed meal of the day, increasing hunger and
financial hardship. For many families, the inability to consistently put food on the table requires them to forego
other essential needs, creating a mental burden that affects overall wellbeing. In Tangipahoa Parish, 1 in every 5
children live in food-insecure households and face uncertainty around meals outside of school cafeteria lunches.
Having a balanced diet supports academic success, as food insecurity is linked to disrupted attention and lower
scores in math and reading. As children are the future of our world, it is imperative that they receive balanced
diets to support healthy physical and social development.
Our program, Feeding the Future, provides children in food-insecure households with consistent access to
support and nourishment. This free assistance operation increases the number of meals cooked each month and
provides children with protein-rich meals. Additionally, nutritious snack bags will be distributed to promote healthy
living. These meals and snack bags will be provided every day that the food bank is open and can be picked up
as needed in our drive-thru line or bike and walk-up line. We project that these services will assist over 2,000
children monthly, and further support families by alleviating financial strain related to groceries. The Feeding the
Future initiative is designed to address the rising rate of child hunger in Louisiana and provide children in the
community with the nutrition needed to learn, play, and grow into the leaders of tomorrow.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 02/23/2026
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Youth Rural Community Disaster Readiness and Response Teams
Project Description:

West Slope Foundation prepares young people on El Dorado County’s Western Slope to protect themselves, their families, and their neighbors before, during, and after disasters. Our youth-centered model—Teen Community Emergency Response Team (Teen CERT), Youth Readiness Ambassadors, and Disaster Readiness Workshops—builds practical skills, confidence, and leadership in a rural context where professional resources can be stretched during emergencies.

Teen CERT develops capable teen leaders who can act safely until responders arrive and support school and neighborhood preparedness. The curriculum covers local hazard awareness and personal safety; fire behavior, extinguisher use, and utility control; disaster medical operations including triage and bleeding control; light search and rescue with scene size‑up, safe lifts and carries, and team communication; and foundational incident organization and radio etiquette. Training is delivered through a focused sequence culminating in a realistic capstone exercise with role‑players and timed objectives. Safety is paramount: screened instructors, clear scope of practice, and documented risk assessments guide every evolution. Graduates support school safety efforts, assist at community events, and help run age‑appropriate drills under supervision.

The Youth Readiness Ambassadors program normalizes preparedness across households and neighborhoods while creating meaningful leadership roles for children and teens. Elementary‑age participants learn personal safety, household contacts, and kid‑friendly go‑bag essentials. Middle‑school youth practice evacuation planning, pet preparedness, basic first aid, and hazard spotting at home and school. High‑school Ambassadors step into facilitation and mentorship—leading peer talks, canvassing neighborhoods with simple checklists, and supporting drills—often co‑enrolling in Teen CERT. Adult Community Ambassadors reinforce youth efforts by hosting block‑level planning nights and coordinating communication trees.

Disaster Readiness Workshops translate skills into family action. One‑day sessions cover core planning, alerts and warnings, evacuation timing, and go‑bag basics; two‑day sessions add tabletop scenarios, evacuation simulations, shelter‑in‑place decision‑making, and recovery steps such as documentation and navigating resources. Workshops are offered at no cost with youth‑friendly stations, multilingual materials, and accommodations to promote participation. Together, these integrated programs create a clear pathway from awareness to action and service—cultivating trained, motivated teens who strengthen resilience across our wildfire‑prone rural communities.

Aukum and Grizzly Flats, with services extended to surrounding unincorporated areas across the county as programs and partners require (workshops, CERT trainings, drills, and survivor support). Project Title: Growing Minds & Futures: Enrichment for Academic Success and Community Leadership
Project Description:

Growing Minds & Futures is a comprehensive, culturally responsive enrichment program designed to expand academic opportunity and real-world skill development for underserved youth in our community. Through in-school, afterschool, and weekend programming, students will engage in hands-on gardening education, music instruction (violin), chess strategy classes, and financial literacy workshops.

Our gardening component teaches students how to grow fresh produce while building knowledge in science, environmental stewardship, nutrition, and sustainability. Students participate in planting, maintaining, and harvesting gardens, reinforcing STEM concepts through experiential learning.

The music component provides structured violin instruction, helping students develop discipline, focus, confidence, and creative expression. Research consistently shows that music education strengthens cognitive development and academic performance.

Chess instruction strengthens critical thinking, patience, problem-solving, and strategic reasoning—skills that directly support math achievement and executive functioning.

Our financial literacy workshops introduce students to budgeting, saving, entrepreneurship basics, and responsible money management—equipping them with practical life skills often missing from traditional curriculum.

By integrating academics, arts, strategy, environmental education, and financial empowerment, this project addresses opportunity gaps while fostering leadership, confidence, and long-term success. Funding will support instructional staff, materials and supplies (garden beds, soil, instruments, chess sets), curriculum development, and student participation scholarships to ensure equitable access.

Growing Minds & Futures will directly impact students by increasing academic engagement, strengthening critical thinking skills, promoting healthy living, and preparing youth to become empowered, capable contributors to their community.

Project Title: Stories Like Me
Project Description:

Stories Like Me is a literacy-centered development initiative under AtoZ Learning Club’s AtoZ Book Explorers program designed to strengthen communication skills, academic confidence, and access to culturally affirming books. What began as a partnership with Tennessee State University’s Speech and Language Pathology Department is expanding into a broader literacy access and development model.

In collaboration with TSU graduate clinicians, children and adults participating in speech and language therapy receive culturally responsive books that reflect diverse identities, languages, and lived experiences. Therapy sessions are built around these texts to support articulation, vocabulary development, comprehension, expressive language, and confidence in communication. By pairing literacy with therapeutic practice, participants strengthen both their voice and their academic foundation.

In addition, AtoZ Learning Club is partnering with Little Free Library initiatives to expand equitable access to diverse books in under-resourced communities. Through book distribution, Little Free Library placements, and community-based literacy engagement, Stories Like Me extends beyond clinical settings and into neighborhoods, ensuring families can continue reading, practicing language skills, and building literacy at home.his initiative demonstrates how literacy is not just about reading, it is a tool for development, confidence-building, and long-term academic success. By combining therapeutic literacy practices with community book access, Stories Like Me promotes a culture where every child and adult can see themselves reflected in stories, strengthen their voice, and develop a lifelong love of reading.
