Project Title: Magnolia Park STEAM Center
Project Description:

The Magnolia Park STEAM Center at CFC provides a supportive environment for youth to enhance literacy and math skills through culturally relevant STEAM topics. The after-school program starts in January for 80 students in the Austin High School feeder pattern, and Camp Fresh, a 10-week summer day camp of 150 students, starts in June. Youth are offered age-appropriate STEAM-based activities as well as our Positive Action curriculum and academic enrichment. The students work on different STEAM activities including creating a design process, experimenting, critical thinking and problem-solving. The after-school program offers homework assistance, tutoring in small groups on math, reading, writing, computer skills, and essential technologies that enhance leadership skills, communication, and problem solving. Students gain in academic performance, access to technology, and digital literacy.
The youth play an active part in figuring out the “what, where, when, how and why” of their activities. This means they are more engaged in playing a critical role as decision-makers in the planning and implementation of their activities. The program has a collaborative learning approach designed to promote sharing of knowledge, skills and learning in an atmosphere of respect and cooperation as youth work together on goals that can only be accomplished with the help of others. Working cooperatively in environments rich in a diversity of talents, abilities and backgrounds reinforces individual learning, nurtures an appreciation of difference and encourages them to feel powerful and safe as they experience a sense of belonging.
The objective is to give those underrepresented in technical areas an awareness and training that “levels the playing field” for them to have improved opportunities and the requisite skills to pursue technology-based careers. The program will expand opportunities for career choices in fields that are not only growing, but the need for skilled workers is becoming greater and more critical.
