Project Title: Mentoring Empowers
Project Description:

Capital Partners for Education (CPE) mentors low-income high school and college students in the academic middle (starting with GPAs between 2.3 – 3.1) from the Washington, DC area to provide the skills and experiences they need to successfully complete college and to excel in the workforce. Our Mentoring Empowers project will provide needed academic enrichment and mentoring services to over 500 low-income students in the academic middle in FY2020. While there are many programs that support youth from low-income backgrounds with the highest grades or those with the lowest, there are far fewer supporting students in the academic middle on the cusp of college eligibility. CPE provides these students with a comprehensive youth development curriculum through the facilitation of long-term one-to-one mentoring relationships, individualized staff support, and career preparation and workforce development opportunities.

According to the Kids Count Data center, 26% of DC youth live in poverty (Annie E. Casey Foundation). In addition to coming from low-income families, these students are often the first in their family to attend college. Currently, 80% of CPE students are first-generation to college, 99% are students of color, and 100% are from low-income households. In many cases, they do not have the knowledge, guidance, or resources to access college and graduate with the skills necessary to thrive in the workforce. Without a college degree, low-income students struggle to access high-wage, high-growth jobs and break cycles of poverty. In our work to help low-income DC families break multi-generational cycles of poverty, our goal is to ensure all of our students 1) obtain a Bachelor’s degree, and 2) build a concrete set of work readiness skills, experiences, and networks necessary to thrive in successful careers. We are growing our program each year, so that by 2021 we will serve 650 students annually.

Project Title: Generation Genius Authors and Speak Up
Project Description:

The Generation Genius Authors (GGA) program at Miami Book Fair encourages local students of all ages to read and write by connecting them with world-renowned authors of popular children’s books. What started out as a single day program with three visiting authors, has grown to include 25+ author sessions for schoolchildren, 31+ outreach visits, four writing workshops, a Teen Press Conference, and much more. More than 8,400 students from 111 South Florida schools participated in last year’s program, and we distributed more than 7,000 free children’s books at author sessions at the Fair. As we enter our 36th year of the Fair, we respectfully request a grant of $10,000 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Foundation.

Of these funds, $5,000 would help underwrite the costs of the GGA program. The remaining $5,000 of the grant would help us kickstart Speak Up, a youth spoken word program launching in the Fall of 2019 as part of a brand-new series of Miami Book Fair youth programs designed through a rigorous and comprehensive strategic planning process overseen by the DeVos Institute of Arts Management. The goal of Speak Up is to support the personal and artistic growth of teenagers in Miami Dade County by presenting after-school and weekend creative writing and publishing workshops. Taught by leading authors and performers in safe spaces throughout the County, these workshops will focus on cultivating the creative writing process in spoken word and performance poetry while providing a healthy and constructive haven for teens, a particularly vulnerable youth demographic. A second phase of the program will include the development of a Youth Advisory Board, and coaching for an official Miami Book Fair team to perform at local, regional, and national Slam Poetry Competitions for youth.

Total Project Budget: 150,000

We are also reaching out to a number of prospective funders specifically for the Speak Up program including the Peacock Foundation, Miami Foundation, Michael de Armas, Brian Pearlin, and others.

Project Title: Supporting Disadvantaged Youth in Attending The Theatre Lab’s Summer Acting Camps
Project Description:

The mission of The Theatre Lab (TTL) is to transform lives through theatre education. The Theatre Lab’s award-winning programs for children and teens provide substantive training and performance opportunities in an atmosphere of encouragement and exploration. Through robust summer and school-break camps and year-round Saturday classes, TTL improves young people’s artistic, communication, teamwork, and writing skills. Led by many of DC’s premier theatre artists and educators, these programs culminate in sold-out public performances.

All TTL youth programs are composed of youth from various skill levels, as well as a range of ethnic, geographic and cultural backgrounds so that youth are exposed to new perspectives, learn ways to connect across differences, and communicate openly and effectively. Teaching Artists emphasize the importance of collaboration and ensemble-building, spending as much time developing the talents of ensemble members as those of lead performers. And, each student works closely with instructors to set ambitious goals for themselves, regardless of experience and skill level, and challenging and socially relevant material is chosen for exploration. In this way, every participant is able to make perceptible progress, feel pride, and have fun.

Students from marginalized backgrounds rarely have the means to participate in structured arts programs, yet research has documented that arts programs have an uncommon ability to transform young people’s lives. To meet this need, we provide one third of our students with full and partial camp scholarships each year. All scholarships are need-based, and all recipients are children living in poverty. Nearly half of scholarship recipients are from the lowest-resourced communities of DC, Wards 5, 6, 7, and 8. With your support, The Theatre Lab aims to serve 160 low-income and disadvantaged youth (and 530 students total) through our youth programs in 2019, providing life-changing opportunities to those who need them most.

Project Title: Music Therapy Program
Project Description:

Children’s Resources would like to provide Music Therapy one time per week for 30 minutes in each grade level Pre-Kindergarten (children ages 2 to 4 years) through fifth grade, for a total of 9 classrooms. The goal of this project is to address delays that are exhibited by our special needs students. Specific goals will include, increasing communication, improving academics/development, motor and social skills. Additionally, maladaptive behaviors and emotional concerns can be targeted.
The American Music Therapy Association, sites various research and evidence based support to provide Music Therapy for children with special needs. They state, “connections between speech and signing, rhythm and motor behavior, memory for song and memory for academic material, and overall ability of preferred music to enhance mood, attention and behavior to optimize the students’ ability to learn and interact.” Standley, (1996) noted the positive effects of Music Therapy and learning among children diagnosed with special needs. Also, in his review of the literature it was determined that music could be used as a reinforcer for these children to accomplish their educational and therapeutic goals.
Children’s Resources serves 90 children and their families daily. 50% of those children are of Hispanic descent, 30% are Caucasian, 15% are African American and 5% are Asian or Pacific Islanders. 85% of the students have been formally diagnosed with a developmental delay or mental health disorder.

This project will be for the 2019-2020 school year (10 months). It is expected that providing music therapy will assist in improving our student’s assessment scores in each area of their development based on the Battelle Developmental Inventory in the pre-school classes and the NWEA Maps assessment in the elementary classrooms along with a Music Therapy assessment that target goals established in Individual Education Plans.

Total Project Budget: $13, 837.50

Project Title: General Operating Support
Project Description:

Joe’s was founded in 1995 to support artists creating new work and innovative arts education programs. Today, Joe’s is the largest, independent nonprofit performing arts center in Prince George’s County, serving more than 75,000 individuals annually through a series of arts programs and community focused services. Our mission is to support a cultural arts hub in communities, catalyzing creativity and economic opportunity for all through programs and productions in education, the performing arts, and work readiness.

In keeping with the Hermanowski Foundation’s mission to positively transform the lives of children and young adults in the United States, Joe’s works to act as a force for empowerment through the rich and varied benefits of artistic expression. We seek to produce artistic and creative opportunities for our community’s youth, both enrichment and education focused. Our programs are organized into five areas:

Arts Education: Joe’s offers daily out-of-school time programming through Club Joe’s (after-school) and Camp Joe’s (summer), serving approximately 450 for elementary aged youth per year. We provide structured homework help, creative play, arts activities, and a healthy snack.

Job Training: Recognizing the dual need for qualified employees and stable employment within the local creative economy for the area’s underserved young people, Joe’s launched the CreativeWorks program in 2008. Participants are trained in theatre tech, digital media, life skills, job readiness, and college prep to move participants toward careers in the creative industries.

Community Programs: Residents visit Joe’s for in-depth movement experiences throughout the year, including yoga and tai chi, and various other workshops and events.

Production: On Stage at Joe’s is a curated season of performances and events, featuring local/national artists, supporting new work, and presenting artists from world traditions.

Project Title: JA World Summer Camp for At-Risk Youth
Project Description:

A $10,000 grant will give thirty at-risk youth, aged 5-16 years old, the opportunity to attend one week of JA World Summer Camp. Camp regular fees are $250/week (9am-3pm) plus $50/week for morning care (8-9am) and $75/week for afternoon care (3-6pm). This grant covers morning/afternoon care, meaning the youth have a fun, safe, educational place to spend each day during the week of camp from 8:00am to 6:00pm. JA World Camp helps youth to develop skills in entrepreneurship, workforce readiness, personal finance, business management, self-presentation, and other life skills…while having fun!

Campers explore career interests/skills, complete job applications & job interviews, and practice their life/work skills while running the city as consumers and citizens. Even our youngest campers will be taught fundamental life/work skills that will be put to practice during the week.

Campers must work together to run JA BizTown and each position has an important part to play in each business’ success. Opportunities to lead, present and delegate are sprinkled throughout the program, at all age levels.

Various age-appropriate Junior Achievement curricula are taught throughout the week, making sure to keep camp FUN but also educational.

Junior Achievement of South Florida continually modifies our programs, based on various evaluations, surveys and communication with our community, to better meet the students’ needs and changing economic realities.

No other organization is locally offering a camp at which kids “become adults” and get to work in their “own authentic-looking town” with other kids their age; or where they play the game of life to see how various choices will affect their future. Parents say, “Keep up the good work; super interactive experience; daughter loved it!” and “Everything was awesome; So glad we came here and will come next year!”

Project Title: Children’s Services To Independence (CSTI)
Project Description:

Children’s Services to Independence (CSTI) goal is for children to participate in critical rehabilitation, recreational, and education activities to maximize their development and self-sufficiency. CSTI serves 80 children under 13 years old and their parents, who live in Broward County. LHOB’s Bright Beginnings Early Intervention Program supports 35 of the children whose ages range from birth through 5 years old. The remaining 55 are children, ages 6 – 13 obtain services through LHOB’s KIDS (Keys to Independence) Program.

Babies and toddlers in Bright Beginnings receive training and support that helps them reach critical developmental stages and prepare for kindergarten. They participate in play therapy to achieve individual goals focusing on eight (8) specific areas: cognitive, language, vision, compensatory, socialization, self-help, fine and gross motor skills. Older children in KIDS participate in year-round recreational activities and classroom experiences to learn safe travel skills, age-appropriate cooking and self-care techniques, Braille, use of computers, and polite social interaction and self-advocacy.

Many children in CSTI have additional handicapping conditions, which determines the special needs program services they receive in Broward County Public Schools (BCPS). Children who are blind or visually impaired may not enter into the BCPS Program for the Visually Impaired. CSTI fills the gap to ensure all children with a severe vision impairment achieve academic and life success. CSTI case managers develop an individual plan for each child with input from their parents and family therapists that will address the child’s needs including the services and equipment necessary for educational and social progression.

CSTI curriculum recently enhanced the access and opportunities for children in the areas Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). Some of the specialized tools we use: Nemeth (Braille mathematics), iPad with voiceover and zoom features, Perkins Braillewriters, tactile models, hands-on experiments, field trips to natural environments.
