Project Title: Children’s Services To Independence (CSTI)
Project Description:

Children’s Services to Independence (CSTI) goal is for children to participate in critical rehabilitation, recreational, and education activities to maximize their development and self-sufficiency. CSTI serves 80 children under 13 years old and their parents, who live in Broward County. LHOB’s Bright Beginnings Early Intervention Program supports 35 of the children whose ages range from birth through 5 years old. The remaining 55 are children, ages 6 – 13 obtain services through LHOB’s KIDS (Keys to Independence) Program.

Babies and toddlers in Bright Beginnings receive training and support that helps them reach critical developmental stages and prepare for kindergarten. They participate in play therapy to achieve individual goals focusing on eight (8) specific areas: cognitive, language, vision, compensatory, socialization, self-help, fine and gross motor skills. Older children in KIDS participate in year-round recreational activities and classroom experiences to learn safe travel skills, age-appropriate cooking and self-care techniques, Braille, use of computers, and polite social interaction and self-advocacy.

Many children in CSTI have additional handicapping conditions, which determines the special needs program services they receive in Broward County Public Schools (BCPS). Children who are blind or visually impaired may not enter into the BCPS Program for the Visually Impaired. CSTI fills the gap to ensure all children with a severe vision impairment achieve academic and life success. CSTI case managers develop an individual plan for each child with input from their parents and family therapists that will address the child’s needs including the services and equipment necessary for educational and social progression.

CSTI curriculum recently enhanced the access and opportunities for children in the areas Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). Some of the specialized tools we use: Nemeth (Braille mathematics), iPad with voiceover and zoom features, Perkins Braillewriters, tactile models, hands-on experiments, field trips to natural environments.
