Project Title: General Operating Support
Project Description:

Joe’s was founded in 1995 to support artists creating new work and innovative arts education programs. Today, Joe’s is the largest, independent nonprofit performing arts center in Prince George’s County, serving more than 75,000 individuals annually through a series of arts programs and community focused services. Our mission is to support a cultural arts hub in communities, catalyzing creativity and economic opportunity for all through programs and productions in education, the performing arts, and work readiness.

In keeping with the Hermanowski Foundation’s mission to positively transform the lives of children and young adults in the United States, Joe’s works to act as a force for empowerment through the rich and varied benefits of artistic expression. We seek to produce artistic and creative opportunities for our community’s youth, both enrichment and education focused. Our programs are organized into five areas:

Arts Education: Joe’s offers daily out-of-school time programming through Club Joe’s (after-school) and Camp Joe’s (summer), serving approximately 450 for elementary aged youth per year. We provide structured homework help, creative play, arts activities, and a healthy snack.

Job Training: Recognizing the dual need for qualified employees and stable employment within the local creative economy for the area’s underserved young people, Joe’s launched the CreativeWorks program in 2008. Participants are trained in theatre tech, digital media, life skills, job readiness, and college prep to move participants toward careers in the creative industries.

Community Programs: Residents visit Joe’s for in-depth movement experiences throughout the year, including yoga and tai chi, and various other workshops and events.

Production: On Stage at Joe’s is a curated season of performances and events, featuring local/national artists, supporting new work, and presenting artists from world traditions.

Creative Services: Joe’s provides affordable, shared space and resources to artists for rehearsal, performance and the instruction of their craft.

Total Project Budget: $1,567,584

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Joe’s maintains a robust earned income stream, matched by a combination of local government contracts and private foundation funding. Joe’s total operating budget for Fiscal Year 2019 is $1,567,584. For Fiscal Year 2020, we expect to receive renewed support from the following annual funders: National Endowment of the Arts, the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, Prince George’s County (through various grants), DC Share Fund, George Preston Marshall Foundation, and the Clark-Winchcole Foundation, among others. Additionally, a large portion of operating costs are generated from program fees from modest enrollment fees for Camp and Club Joe’s (our out-of-school time arts enrichment program for local youth), fees for artists renting our affordable rehearsal spaces, and fees for movement classes.
