Project Title: Personal Hygiene Kits/Care Packages
Project Description:

We are seeking funds to provide Personal Hygiene Kits/Care Packages to
approximately 225 abused, sexually abused and criminally neglected children. The CPT
operates the ONLY forensic medical clinic serving alleged child abuse victims in the
County. Our doctors also examine victims in emergency rooms; and, unfortunately at
the morgue or medical examiner’s office as necessary. CPT services are free and
available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our goal is to provide a kit to every child
abuse victim examined in our clinic. We started this project last year. The responses
from the children and caregivers were unimaginable. You\’d have thought we were
distributing toys or video games from the reactions we got giving out shampoo,
deodorant, and diapers.
The gender & age-appropriate kits facilitate discussion between CPT staff, victims and
caregivers about hygiene and follow-up care. Readily available supplies and medicines
encourage better follow-up care; reduce further infections and medical expenses, and
support victims and caregivers in a challenging time. Baby kits include diapers, wipes,
formula, etc. plus 1st aid supplies in a diaper bag. Child and teen kits include similar 1st
aid items, plus underwear, socks, and personal hygiene items in a backpack. All kits
include brochures in English, Spanish, and Creole. This year, we would like to include
school supplies and possibly something fun for the kids- a toy or gift card for older kids.
Previous kits cost $35 on average to produce. With the additional items, we estimate
kits will cost approximately $48 each.
We operate on a slim budget with strict restrictions on reimbursable expenses. We can
only fund special projects like this with grants and private donations. Thank you for the
opportunity to submit an LOI and the Foundation’s support of Florida’s children. We
appreciate your time and consideration.

Project Title: Generation Digi Camp for Girls
Project Description:

Our request is for a girl\’s 21st century technology skills course. Students will develop their own video games utilizing Scratch, a popular programming language developed by MIT engineers. Makers will create their own games and share them with each other. Topics include game and character development, storyboarding, obstacles, leveling, power-ups, variables like scoring and timers, and publishing games online. Students will learn how to create Webpages using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as well as other media creation tools. These coding skills are essential tools for 21st century learners. Propel staff will pick up the girls from their homes and drop them back off again, as well as provide a healthy snack.

According to the African American Policy Forum, African-American girls were 6X as likely to be suspended as their white counterparts (African-American boys were only 3X as likely to be suspended as white boys) . Our kids simply don\’t have the same opportunities as other kids in our community. Median household income in Boca Raton is $71,468, 35% greater than Palm Beach County as a whole and 51% greater than that of Florida; yet over 90% of our youth come from households with an average family income of less than $40,000. Most of our kids live in Dixie Manor, Pearl City, along Dixie Highway and in Section 8 housing throughout the area. The majority of Propel kids work and pay for things others typically get from their parents such as sneakers, clothes, hygiene items, field trips, yearbooks, etc. Propel kids with jobs work an AVERAGE of 27.5 hours a week, on top of extracurricular activities and schoolwork. We hope this course will be the first of many special opportunities for our girls to level the playing field for them, now and in the future.

Project Title: Genius Authors Program
Project Description:

For more than 25 years the Generation Genius Authors (GGA) Program has encouraged reading by connecting students with popular and esteemed children and YA authors. The program\’s goal is to cultivate an interest and passion for reading in students by showing them students reading can be fun, introducing them to popular authors, sending them home with a signed book to start their personal collection, and inspiring within them a love for reading from which all else becomes possible. In 2014,, with support from numerous foundations, 8,140 students from 151 schools in MiamiDade and Broward participated. We provided transportation for almost 2,000 students who would not have been able to attend the Book Fair otherwise. In addition to the 123 author sessions at the Book Fair, we brought authors to 28 local schools, reaching an additional 1,560 students unable to attend. We also conducted 4 writing workshops and gave away 4,240 books. Last year we distributed more books than the year before and still 3,774 kids went home without a book. Our goal is to raise an additional $33,000 to ensure each student will go home with a free book this year. A grant of $10,000 would provide a book to approximately 1,250 Miami-Dade public school students. GGA is a critical component of our mission to inspire new generations of readers. The ability, and just as importantly, the love of reading and writing can have a profound impact on a student\’s success in school and throughout life. Numerous studies have shown students who enjoy reading and have strong reading skills perform better in school and are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college, have better job prospects and earning potential, and be more engaged in cultural and civic activities.

Project Title: Victims of Child Abuse (VOCA)
Project Description:

ReadyKids (previously Children, Youth & Family Services) is a private non-profit organization working toward the vision that every child in the community is ready to learn, ready for relationships, and ultimately ready for life. For over 90 years, ReadyKids has provided critical support to children and families in Charlottesville and the five surrounding counties. Its programs help kids build life-long skills so that they have the chance to reach their full potential. Last year, ReadyKids programs impacted the lives of nearly 7,000 children, families and child care providers in Charlottesville and surrounding counties.

ReadyKids’ Victims of Child Abuse (VOCA) program provides no-cost counseling to help kids and families who have experienced trauma or abuse begin the healing process and create safer environments. Counseling is also available for children living in homes where domestic violence has taken place. Masters-level VOCA counselors help children cope with the trauma of abuse and move forward successfully. In addition to working directly with children, VOCA counselors support parents, foster parents, or primary caregivers to ensure that they understand and agree on ways to maintain their child\’s safety; this reduces rates of re-victimization and increases positive outcomes for both the abused child and their family.

ReadyKids is committed to measuring our effectiveness and long term impacts on the clients we serve. During FY2014 (July 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014) VOCA served a total of 127 primary victims of abuse and 157 parents and professionals were impacted through outreach. The goals for the VOCA program are as follows:

• Kids become socially and emotionally healthy and relate well to others.
• Kids experience positive parent/child and family interaction.
• Kids are not abused or neglected.

Total Project Budget: $243,693

Project Title: Transitional Independent Living Program
Project Description:

Even more frightening than the thought of a growing number of children being placed in a foster care system that is not able to care for them are the consequences of being placed in such a system. Research shows that potential outcomes of spending time in foster care include brain damage, developmental delays, aggressive behavior, and depression. Research also shows that a result of being raised in multiple foster homes and facilities is that youth nearing emancipation have not yet mastered the skills necessary for self-sufficiency. Without basic life-skills, youth who leave care have difficulty staying healthy, finding safe housing, getting and keeping a steady job, and avoiding financial and legal trouble. Too few undertake the education and training necessary to compete in today\’s economy. There is often no one with whom they can share small successes or from whom advice can be sought. Simple emergencies easily escalate into full-blown crises.

At our Transitional Independent Living Program, we are dedicated to providing a supportive and proactive living and learning environment for these youth. Our objectives are to provide quality, safe, affordable housing, emotional and material support, supportive relationships, goal setting and career planning, education and employment opportunities, life-skills development, and moral and spiritual guidance for the young adults in our care. We implement a youth-centered approach, allowing participants to decide causes of action for their own futures while promoting access to apartments for self-sufficiency. The program serves up to 18 transitioning foster youth, emancipated foster youth, and other homeless youth, ages 18 to 25, on our Villages of Hope Campus and will serve up to 28 of these youth at The Haven Campus for placement in a residential supervised apartment setting. We are the only program in Palm Beach County that accepts parenting youth, and we are proud to be the first organization in Palm Beach County to propose the new state-initiated Extended Foster Care Program for transitioning foster youth!

Project Title: Learn to Swim Program
Project Description:

The Agassiz Village Learn To Swim program is an individualized, instructional swim program offered to all campers at all skill levels. The program follows the guidelines of the American Red Cross program levels and is overseen by an American Red Cross certified lifeguard and/or water safety instructor. The intent of this program is to build the camper\’s self confidence and sense of accomplishment through skills advancement.
Our Learn To Swim program offers an opportunity for individual campers to challenge themselves and for groups of campers to show encouragement and support to their fellow campers. The program is organized, executed, supervised, and evaluated by the Agassiz Village Waterfront Director. The Waterfront Director develops age and skill appropriate instructional swim plans, supervises swim instructor staff, ensures safety and a positive, encouraging environment for the program, and evaluates the progress of each participant along with overall program deliverables. The Waterfront Director reports directly to the Camp Director.
Each camper’s skills are assessed on the first day of the session. By the end of the two-week session each camper will have participated in at least four instructional swimming activity periods and a minimum of four recreational swim periods. Every camper will actively participate in each of their instructional swimming activity periods, will have 45-minute instruction with a qualified Agassiz Village swim instructor, and receive an achievement assessment from the Agassiz Village waterfront director at the end of their session. There is an official ceremony at a camp-wide assembly to present the awards to campers who achieved a next skill level.
A $5,000 grant from the Hermanowski Foundation will allow us to upgrade our equipment (life jackets, kick boards, “noodles”, first aid, waterfront and life guard supplies) and support the cost of staffing and insurance.

Project Title: Caregiving Youth Project
Project Description:

As the first of its kind in the US, the Caregiving Youth Project (CYP) partners with The School District of Palm Beach County. The CYP which began in 2006 at Boca Middle School, identifies and supports this hidden population of students who deserve to achieve academic success including on time progression to the next grade and high school graduation as well as to be emotionally and physically healthy. Since its inception, more than 800 middle and high school students and their families have been served.
The CYP provides services in-school, out-of-school and at home. Examples include skills building/support groups, lunch and learn sessions, the overnight Camp Treasure, tutoring and respite. Student-caregivers enroll in the CYP as early as grade six and remain through high school graduation as long as they wish and their caregiving continues.
Typically caregiving youth do not have a person at home assisting them even with homework or special projects plus guidance counselors lack time to spend with students individually as they may have been able to do in years past. Thus, for caregiving youth to achieve to a level closer to their potential, extra support is needed. Because of home responsibilities, they are unable to stay after school or arrive early to receive needed academic help which is often crucial for their success.
The demand for CYP services is in increasing as the numbers of students served grows and also because of proven results; tutoring, including in-home tutoring demand has exceeded the budget and monies targeted elsewhere have been reallocated. Not only do students report grades improving but also through an agreement between The School District, parents and the CYP, access to student records is now available. Thus, an accurate understanding of the students’ progress leads to even greater success.
