Project Title: Generation Digi Camp for Girls
Project Description:
Our request is for a girl\’s 21st century technology skills course. Students will develop their own video games utilizing Scratch, a popular programming language developed by MIT engineers. Makers will create their own games and share them with each other. Topics include game and character development, storyboarding, obstacles, leveling, power-ups, variables like scoring and timers, and publishing games online. Students will learn how to create Webpages using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as well as other media creation tools. These coding skills are essential tools for 21st century learners. Propel staff will pick up the girls from their homes and drop them back off again, as well as provide a healthy snack.
According to the African American Policy Forum, African-American girls were 6X as likely to be suspended as their white counterparts (African-American boys were only 3X as likely to be suspended as white boys) . Our kids simply don\’t have the same opportunities as other kids in our community. Median household income in Boca Raton is $71,468, 35% greater than Palm Beach County as a whole and 51% greater than that of Florida; yet over 90% of our youth come from households with an average family income of less than $40,000. Most of our kids live in Dixie Manor, Pearl City, along Dixie Highway and in Section 8 housing throughout the area. The majority of Propel kids work and pay for things others typically get from their parents such as sneakers, clothes, hygiene items, field trips, yearbooks, etc. Propel kids with jobs work an AVERAGE of 27.5 hours a week, on top of extracurricular activities and schoolwork. We hope this course will be the first of many special opportunities for our girls to level the playing field for them, now and in the future.
