Project Title: Caregiving Youth Project
Project Description:

As the first of its kind in the US, the Caregiving Youth Project (CYP) partners with The School District of Palm Beach County. The CYP which began in 2006 at Boca Middle School, identifies and supports this hidden population of students who deserve to achieve academic success including on time progression to the next grade and high school graduation as well as to be emotionally and physically healthy. Since its inception, more than 800 middle and high school students and their families have been served.
The CYP provides services in-school, out-of-school and at home. Examples include skills building/support groups, lunch and learn sessions, the overnight Camp Treasure, tutoring and respite. Student-caregivers enroll in the CYP as early as grade six and remain through high school graduation as long as they wish and their caregiving continues.
Typically caregiving youth do not have a person at home assisting them even with homework or special projects plus guidance counselors lack time to spend with students individually as they may have been able to do in years past. Thus, for caregiving youth to achieve to a level closer to their potential, extra support is needed. Because of home responsibilities, they are unable to stay after school or arrive early to receive needed academic help which is often crucial for their success.
The demand for CYP services is in increasing as the numbers of students served grows and also because of proven results; tutoring, including in-home tutoring demand has exceeded the budget and monies targeted elsewhere have been reallocated. Not only do students report grades improving but also through an agreement between The School District, parents and the CYP, access to student records is now available. Thus, an accurate understanding of the students’ progress leads to even greater success.
