Project Title: “Hands-on, Minds-on” Empowering low income youth into Science.
Project Description:

Children and Youth from low income families don’t have the same opportunities to learn science as their wealthy counterparts, most of them have never seen or heard of microscopes or pipettes and become estranged from science. With a general lack of scientific education for underprivileged children in the Dominican Republic, most are deprived of an opportunity to have experiences which strengthen and reinforce their own inclination to experiment, question etc. Since 1995 at Hogar del Niño we have been spurring an atmosphere of scientific interest among our precollege level students, through science, biology, physics and ecology classes. Despite our limited and outdated equipment and resources for the 500 students of middle and highschool level (4 microscopes, some burners, pipettes) our students have developed an early interest for science and we even proudly have a bionalytical scientist graduated in 2010.

We believe that our students, all coming from low-income households, will learn best if they are actively engaged, can see, touch, and smell the results of their experiments that is learning in a more exploratory and fun way, learn to discover and have a real taste for being a scientist. To fulfill this, the “Hands on, Minds on” Project will start by constructing a well equipped science laboratory for biology, chemistry, ecology and physics, teachers will be trained to teach science more effectively and allow undergraduate students to experience authentic research early in their academic careers. The project will also host twice a year a science fair, where students will show the science project they have been assigned with and connect scientific learning to their own lives and a Science Summer Camp, for outstanding students in science to be able to improve and do research. The aim of this project is to put our students on the path to becoming future scientific leaders and researchers who would use science to change the world their coming from.

Today’s Date: March 31, 2015
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: YEA for Awareness to Action! Engaging Students of all ages in learning and making a difference as Environmental Stewards.
Project Description:

This project will focus on providing engaging education programs to underserved, distressed or title 1 students and to community members. The programs will teach them about the various impacts that humans have on the environment and then the personal solutions to those impacts. Program participants will then be invited to participate in environmental restorations, such as dune plantings, upland plantings or butterfly garden plantings in the community or at their schools. These activities will promote continuous environmental stewardship by engaging the students directly in lessons that help them to see the problem first hand and then solve it through personal action. People protect what they love and they become passionate about it when they understand it by participating in it.

During YEA programs and events we have had many instances where participants were unsure of what they were going to learn or disinterested at times. However after being a part of the engaging hands-on lessons and being a part of an event where they were literally in the dirt and restoring a habitat, they became excited, motivated and proud to be part of a solution and community effort. They came back for more and many of the students remembered the lesson and experience for years to come. Some even based their science fair projects on what they learned.

Project funds will be utilized to provide free programming to underserved or distressed children in schools or clubs like the Boy\’s and Girl\’s clubs, Kids in Distress or other organizations with this target population.

Moreover funds will be utilized to purchase restoration materials and supplies such as plants, osmocote, etc. The restorations will often be followed up with a tree give-away so that participants can start restoring their own properties as well.

Total Project Budget: $25,000.00

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Wells Fargo/NFWF grant, Lauderdale by the Sea matching dollars, Surfside matching dollars, NWF\’s Trees for Wildlife Provides trees for give-aways- these funds and trees are committed. Further funding is potential from Khols, FPL, etc

Project Title: Provide Trained CASA Volunteers to Advocate in Court for Abused and Neglected Children
Project Description:

Piedmont CASA opened its doors in 1995 with the goal of breaking the cycle of abuse and neglect by assuring that child victims have strong voices in court, access to necessary and appropriate education, mental health and physical health services/therapies, and the opportunity to live in safe, permanent and nurturing homes. The children we serve range in age from newborn to 18, and more than 90% come from homes that are living at or below the poverty level.

CASA Volunteers go through a rigorous selection process and training to ensure that they have the time and skills required for success.

Volunteers are then inducted by the judge and assigned to a case. Their core duties are to: (1) investigate the child’s situation; (2) write thorough independent investigative reports for the Court; (3) monitor the case in accordance with judges’ orders; and (4) assist guardians ad litem.

Volunteers visit their CASA children at least once a month, establishing a relationship which is often the only consistent presence throughout the duration of a case. They interview everyone involved in the child’s life, scour public records and work with social services, community substance abuse and mental health service providers, foster home services, hospitals, therapists, physicians, and schools. They monitor the children’s progress and ensure that needed services are provided in accordance with the court’s orders.

Last year, 121 Volunteers served 234 children, donating 8,512 hours in direct advocacy. According to Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, their donated time was valued at $181,901.44 ($21.37 per hour). In FY 2016, we expect to induct 30 new Volunteers, and serve 230 children.

Research shows that children with CASA Volunteers spend less time in court, less time in foster homes, and find safe, permanent homes faster – all keys to breaking the cycle of abuse and neglect.

Total Project Budget: $573,824

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Piedmont CASA has long been focused on program sustainability and has continued to implement a development plan that ensures diversified funding. Last year, individual donations accounted for 58% of the program revenues, private foundations 13%, state and federal grants 25%, and a special event 3%. Grants committed for FY 2016: Albemarle County ($9,270), City of Charlottesville ($9,818), Applied: VOCA ($51,674), National CASA ($23,000) Gwathmey ($20,000). Project Title: Victory Tuition Assistance for Children with Autism and Related Disabilities
Project Description:

It is estimated to cost at least $17,000 more per year to care for a child with autism compared to a child without autism (CDC, 2015). Tuition cost is the most commonly cited reason preventing parents from successful enrollment in our programs. Annual tuition ranges from $18,000 to $44,000 annually depending on the program. Families seeking financial aid submit a formal application which includes documenting the proof of income (i.e., most recent tax return) and an appointed committee determines the level of aid. In the last three years alone, The Victory Center has distributed over $100,000 in scholarships to deserving families. Scholarships range in size from $2,500 to $18,000 depending on a family’s financial circumstances. Despite our efforts to provide scholarships and reduce the cost of tuition, there is still great need for additional funds. The reality is that the average annual income for a family household in Florida is $46,956 (US Census Bureau), rates of autism have continued to rise, intensive behavioral intervention is costly, and state scholarships only partially fund our programs.

Project Title: Equine-Assisted Activities for SAIL students
Project Description:

At SAIL we are always looking to bring new opportunities to our students – to create learning environments that stimulate and motivate our students; that facilitate community inclusion; and, inspire confidence and independence. To that end, we have identified students who we think will particularly benefit from Equine-Assisted Activities (EAA). EAA are widely recognized as one of the most beneficial forms of recreational therapy for people with special needs, improving self-esteem and promoting interaction with the world around them. When riding, students process visual, auditory, and tactile information, leading to significantly improved muscle tone, strength, mobility, speech, balance, and coordination. Students will also learn how to groom the horses and follow instructions, improving decision-making and problem solving capabilities. Riding gives these students access to a physical activity otherwise not available.

In the Healthy People 2010 Progress Report, the CDC reports people with disabilities are more likely to be obese and engage in exercise less frequently than people without disabilities. The report found 45% of males and 56% of females with developmental disabilities were overweight. These figures are substantially higher than those for the general population. A disproportionate number of people with disabilities live near, at, or below the poverty level; access to fitness and other wellness activities are limited or in unaffordable, and equipment and professional expertise addressing special needs are not readily accessible.

If invited, it is our intent to submit a grant request for Equine-Assisted Activities for SAIL students for the 2015-16 school year. At Seagull we believe everyone has the right to live a satisfying, productive life, to fully participate in the community, and to live as independently as possible, while having the support and resources necessary to pursue their dreams and fulfill their aspirations. Our programs are in response to needs and inspired by this philosophy.

Project Title: Kristi House\’s 20/20 Visionaries: Committed to Ending Child Sexual Abuse
Project Description:

Therapy is a critical component in helping children overcome the trauma of child sexual abuse. Kristi House remains the only agency in Miami-Dade County providing specialized mental health services regardless of families’ ability to pay. Because untreated child sexual abuse often manifests itself in health, sexual and social problems throughout life—and at a considerable cost for all involved—it is vitally important that Kristi House provides sexually abused children with mental health services.

Despite limited public funding and a need for services that outpaces capacity, in 2015 Kristi House is marking 20 years of uninterrupted service to Miami children. Some 15,000 children have received services, and Kristi House has grown into a leadership organization in our state and nation. This has only been possible with the support of private individuals and foundations who have enabled Kristi House to steadily grow operations to meet community needs. The Board and its Strategic Plan have placed a strong emphasis on increasing private support and growing the endowment fund to carry us into the future.

20/20 Visionaries are those foundations, corporations and individuals who understand the importance of Kristi House and the work that has been accomplished — and see clearly the work that needs to be done over the next 20 years. These Visionaries believe passionately in our mission, care deeply about the children and families we serve and want to help ensure our long term growth. Our goal is to secure 20 Visionaries, each making a $20,000 gift to Kristi House (over one or two years.)

We invite Hermanowski Foundation to join us as part of the 20/20 Visionaries with a $20,000 grant to be used for vital therapy services—so that every child gets the help he or she needs to overcome the trauma of sexual abuse.

Project Title: Educational Advocacy Program fro High School and College
Project Description:

Children coming into the foster care system are often behind educationally due to sporadic attendance, changing schools, and chaos at home. In fact, less than 50% of youth involved in the system will graduate from high school and only 3% will obtain their college degree. Best Foot Forward (BFF) seeks to improve these dismal outcomes one student at a time.
BFF uses an evidence based model called Check & Connect to support elementary, middle, and high school students in foster care. Each student in the BFF program is assigned an Educational Advocate who will build a long-term relationship with the student supporting them through their academic challenges and celebrating their successes. The Advocate meets with the student weekly to check on their attendance, behavior, and grades and to connect the student by offering individualized interventions and incentives in partnership with school personnel, families, and community service providers.
The Educational Advocate acts as a mentor encouraging the student to build on their natural abilities; as a community professional referring the student to school and community programs; and as an advocate empowering the student to voice their concerns and express their feelings.
One key element of the program is recognizing when a student needs additional help in core subjects. When remediation is needed, BFF connects the student with a specialized tutor to improve their understanding of the subject. Tutors provide struggling youth with one-on-one support and attention giving them to encouragement and guidance to succeed.
