Project Title: YEA for Awareness to Action! Engaging Students of all ages in learning and making a difference as Environmental Stewards.
Project Description:
This project will focus on providing engaging education programs to underserved, distressed or title 1 students and to community members. The programs will teach them about the various impacts that humans have on the environment and then the personal solutions to those impacts. Program participants will then be invited to participate in environmental restorations, such as dune plantings, upland plantings or butterfly garden plantings in the community or at their schools. These activities will promote continuous environmental stewardship by engaging the students directly in lessons that help them to see the problem first hand and then solve it through personal action. People protect what they love and they become passionate about it when they understand it by participating in it.
During YEA programs and events we have had many instances where participants were unsure of what they were going to learn or disinterested at times. However after being a part of the engaging hands-on lessons and being a part of an event where they were literally in the dirt and restoring a habitat, they became excited, motivated and proud to be part of a solution and community effort. They came back for more and many of the students remembered the lesson and experience for years to come. Some even based their science fair projects on what they learned.
Project funds will be utilized to provide free programming to underserved or distressed children in schools or clubs like the Boy\’s and Girl\’s clubs, Kids in Distress or other organizations with this target population.
Moreover funds will be utilized to purchase restoration materials and supplies such as plants, osmocote, etc. The restorations will often be followed up with a tree give-away so that participants can start restoring their own properties as well.
Total Project Budget: $25,000.00
