Project Title: Equine-Assisted Activities for SAIL students
Project Description:

At SAIL we are always looking to bring new opportunities to our students – to create learning environments that stimulate and motivate our students; that facilitate community inclusion; and, inspire confidence and independence. To that end, we have identified students who we think will particularly benefit from Equine-Assisted Activities (EAA). EAA are widely recognized as one of the most beneficial forms of recreational therapy for people with special needs, improving self-esteem and promoting interaction with the world around them. When riding, students process visual, auditory, and tactile information, leading to significantly improved muscle tone, strength, mobility, speech, balance, and coordination. Students will also learn how to groom the horses and follow instructions, improving decision-making and problem solving capabilities. Riding gives these students access to a physical activity otherwise not available.

In the Healthy People 2010 Progress Report, the CDC reports people with disabilities are more likely to be obese and engage in exercise less frequently than people without disabilities. The report found 45% of males and 56% of females with developmental disabilities were overweight. These figures are substantially higher than those for the general population. A disproportionate number of people with disabilities live near, at, or below the poverty level; access to fitness and other wellness activities are limited or in unaffordable, and equipment and professional expertise addressing special needs are not readily accessible.

If invited, it is our intent to submit a grant request for Equine-Assisted Activities for SAIL students for the 2015-16 school year. At Seagull we believe everyone has the right to live a satisfying, productive life, to fully participate in the community, and to live as independently as possible, while having the support and resources necessary to pursue their dreams and fulfill their aspirations. Our programs are in response to needs and inspired by this philosophy.
