Project Title: “Hands-on, Minds-on” Empowering low income youth into Science.
Project Description:

Children and Youth from low income families don’t have the same opportunities to learn science as their wealthy counterparts, most of them have never seen or heard of microscopes or pipettes and become estranged from science. With a general lack of scientific education for underprivileged children in the Dominican Republic, most are deprived of an opportunity to have experiences which strengthen and reinforce their own inclination to experiment, question etc. Since 1995 at Hogar del Niño we have been spurring an atmosphere of scientific interest among our precollege level students, through science, biology, physics and ecology classes. Despite our limited and outdated equipment and resources for the 500 students of middle and highschool level (4 microscopes, some burners, pipettes) our students have developed an early interest for science and we even proudly have a bionalytical scientist graduated in 2010.

We believe that our students, all coming from low-income households, will learn best if they are actively engaged, can see, touch, and smell the results of their experiments that is learning in a more exploratory and fun way, learn to discover and have a real taste for being a scientist. To fulfill this, the “Hands on, Minds on” Project will start by constructing a well equipped science laboratory for biology, chemistry, ecology and physics, teachers will be trained to teach science more effectively and allow undergraduate students to experience authentic research early in their academic careers. The project will also host twice a year a science fair, where students will show the science project they have been assigned with and connect scientific learning to their own lives and a Science Summer Camp, for outstanding students in science to be able to improve and do research. The aim of this project is to put our students on the path to becoming future scientific leaders and researchers who would use science to change the world their coming from.
