Project Title: Genius Authors Program
Project Description:
For more than 25 years the Generation Genius Authors (GGA) Program has encouraged reading by connecting students with popular and esteemed children and YA authors. The program\’s goal is to cultivate an interest and passion for reading in students by showing them students reading can be fun, introducing them to popular authors, sending them home with a signed book to start their personal collection, and inspiring within them a love for reading from which all else becomes possible. In 2014,, with support from numerous foundations, 8,140 students from 151 schools in MiamiDade and Broward participated. We provided transportation for almost 2,000 students who would not have been able to attend the Book Fair otherwise. In addition to the 123 author sessions at the Book Fair, we brought authors to 28 local schools, reaching an additional 1,560 students unable to attend. We also conducted 4 writing workshops and gave away 4,240 books. Last year we distributed more books than the year before and still 3,774 kids went home without a book. Our goal is to raise an additional $33,000 to ensure each student will go home with a free book this year. A grant of $10,000 would provide a book to approximately 1,250 Miami-Dade public school students. GGA is a critical component of our mission to inspire new generations of readers. The ability, and just as importantly, the love of reading and writing can have a profound impact on a student\’s success in school and throughout life. Numerous studies have shown students who enjoy reading and have strong reading skills perform better in school and are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college, have better job prospects and earning potential, and be more engaged in cultural and civic activities.
