Project Title: Science Enrichment Programs
Project Description:

At Mission Science Workshop (MSW), we provide hands-on STEM experiences that inspire children to become lifelong learners, explorers, builders, and creators. Each year, we partner with more than 100 public schools and community organizations across the Bay Area to offer field trips, after-school and summer programs, mobile workshops, and free weekly community drop-in days. MSW reaches nearly 20,000 students and their families annually and operates three community workshop spaces in San Francisco’s Mission, Excelsior, and Bayview districts.

Despite San Francisco’s leadership in science and technology, many public schools lack the resources to fully equip students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to pursue STEM careers. While other enrichment programs exist, MSW is uniquely committed to serving underserved youth and remaining rooted in the communities we support. For over 34 years, we have partnered with Title I public schools, where at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Equity is central to our mission, and we prioritize serving youth historically underrepresented in STEM, including girls, Black and Latino students, English learners, and recent immigrants. To remove barriers, we absorb program costs and offer all of our programs free of charge.

Our STEM programs spark curiosity and encourage students to ask questions, experiment, and explore. Youth learn by doing: building wobble robots, launching steam rockets, woodworking, tinkering with solar-powered radios, and interacting with live animals. Surveys show that this hands-on approach helps students better understand scientific concepts while discovering their interests. Our workshop spaces are filled with interactive exhibits, DIY tinkering stations, live animals, and collections of scientific tools and artifacts that invite exploration beyond the classroom.

However, rising costs and declining public school funding threaten programs like ours. We are seeking support for our field trip program, which serves 20,000 Bay Area students each year, primarily from Title I schools. Funding ensures these programs remain free, expands access to STEM learning, and helps inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.

Project Title: Future Golfers of America – "Growing the Champions of Tomorrow"
Project Description:

The Ted Rhodes Foundation seeks support from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to expand its youth development initiative, Future Golfers of America – “Growing the Champions of Tomorrow.”

This program introduces underrepresented youth ages 5–18 to the game of golf while providing mentorship, life skills training, and opportunities for personal growth.

Through this initiative, the Foundation hosts youth golf clinics and the Ted Rhodes Junior Golf Tour, which offers competitive playing opportunities and exposure to the game for youth who may not otherwise have access to the sport.

In 2026, the tour will host events in Chicago, Atlanta, Nashville, Jacksonville, FL, Montgomery, AL, and Dallas, engaging youth from urban communities and providing them with meaningful experiences in golf and leadership development.

Grant funds will help support essential program costs including golf course access, professional instruction, equipment for youth participants, tournament operations, and transportation assistance. By reducing financial barriers, the Foundation ensures that youth from underserved communities can participate in structured golf programming that promotes confidence, discipline, and sportsmanship.

Beyond learning the fundamentals of golf, participants gain valuable life skills such as goal setting, perseverance, leadership, and teamwork. The program also introduces youth to potential educational and career pathways connected to the golf industry.

Through this initiative, the Ted Rhodes Foundation expects to serve hundreds of youth annually across multiple cities while honoring the legacy of golf pioneer Ted Rhodes, one of the first African American professional golfers to break barriers in the sport.

Support from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation will help expand access to the game of golf and empower the next generation of diverse leaders both on and off the course.

Our Summer Academy provides high‑quality instruction in acting, dance, and vocal performance, offering young people a safe, supportive, and creatively challenging environment where they can develop artistic skills, build confidence, and discover their own potential.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 4, 2026
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Play, Explore, Discover: HighScope STEM for Preschoolers
Project Description:

Child Development Learning Center (CDLC), a NAEYC-accredited, Parent Aware Four-Star preschool in Burnsville, Minnesota, requests $10,000 from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to complete full implementation of the HighScope Preschool Curriculum. Since 1971, CDLC has provided high-quality education to approximately 80 preschoolers annually. Our enrollment reflects the rich diversity of our community, including 27% BIPOC children, 8% English language learners, and families supported by state scholarship funding.

THE NEED: Every child deserves the strongest possible foundation for kindergarten success. Research consistently demonstrates that high-quality, structured early learning is among the greatest predictors of long-term academic achievement — yet BIPOC children and English language learners frequently arrive at kindergarten without the foundational skills they need to thrive.

THE SOLUTION: HighScope is one of the most extensively researched early childhood curricula in the world, with more than 50 years of evidence demonstrating its effectiveness. Its active learning approach and plan-do-review cycle empower children to take initiative, develop problem-solving skills, and build confidence through purposeful play and discovery. HighScope is recognized within NAEYC’s accreditation framework and essential to maintaining our Four-Star rating. A $10,000 grant from the Bailey Foundation initiated this work, funding our STEM Sprouts integration, which aligns seamlessly with HighScope’s framework. The Hermanowski Foundation’s investment completes implementation, ensuring every child receives consistent instruction across all developmental domains — literacy, mathematics, science, social-emotional development, and creative arts.

PROJECT INVESTMENT: This $10,000 request funds the HighScope Preschool Curriculum Kit ($1,944), educator professional development/certification ($3,900 per educator), and staff training and implementation support ($4,100). Professional development begins in early 2027, with full implementation by fall 2027.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES: By the end of the 2027–2028 school year, 100% of educators will be trained and 75% of students will demonstrate kindergarten readiness across all developmental domains — ensuring every child enters kindergarten confident, curious, and fully prepared to succeed.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 4, 2026
Requested Amount: $10,000.00

Project Title: Hermanowski School Readiness and Literacy Initiative
Project Description:

Fun Time Early Childhood Academy respectfully requests $10,000 to support the Hermanowski School Readiness and Literacy Initiative at its four early childhood learning centers in Naples, FL. This includes the Santa Barbara Center in Golden Gate City, one of Collier County’s most economically disadvantaged and diverse communities.
More than 18% of Collier County children live in poverty, and Golden Gate families face additional barriers, including low income, language differences, and limited access to early learning resources (Collier Community Foundation, 2023; U.S. Census Bureau, 2023). Approximately 65% of residents are Hispanic and 15% are Black. In high-poverty communities like Golden Gate City, where families face low-income and racial, ethnic and language barriers, children are more likely to enter kindergarten behind if they lack high-quality early learning. Black and Latino children are disproportionately affected. State and national assessments show these disparities endure into elementary school, including sizable fourth-grade reading gaps by race/ethnicity, according to the Florida Department of Education’s 2024 NAEP results summary.
This initiative will equip 20 classrooms at all four Fun Time locations, serving up to 300 children, with literacy materials, hands-on learning tools, and teacher training focused on kindergarten readiness. These resources help children develop vocabulary, early reading skills, problem-solving ability, and emotional regulation during the most critical period of brain development.
Fun Time expects strong, measurable outcomes. At least 80% of participating children will meet or exceed age-appropriate social, emotional, and cognitive milestones. At least 90% of Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) students will be assessed as kindergarten-ready, exceeding typical readiness rates in high-poverty communities.
For many Santa Barbara children, these classroom resources represent their first consistent access to books and structured early learning. Support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will ensure children receive the right tools to gain the foundational skills needed to succeed in school, changing their educational trajectory and opening the door to lifelong opportunity and success.

Project Title: Creating a home for foster Teens
Project Description:

The Elizabeth Home is a residential group home in Mobile, Alabama, serving foster teen girls ages 13–18. In Mobile, teens over 12 face limited placement options, leaving many at risk of instability, multiple placements, and poor long-term outcomes. The Elizabeth Home fills this critical gap by providing safe housing, structured routines, academic support, life skills training, mentorship, and individualized transition planning.

The home will serve 7–10 residents and is staffed by a full-time house parent who provides 24/7 supervision and guidance. Residents will participate in a life skills curriculum, including budgeting, meal preparation, job readiness, and emotional regulation. Academic support through tutoring and school advocacy ensures teens stay on track educationally. Mentorship and enrichment activities, including field trips and workshops, build confidence, social skills, and community connections.

Startup funding will cover initial costs such as furnishings, program materials, licensing, transportation, and the first months of operations. Once open, the home will be sustained through DHR funding ($11,000/month) and supplemented by local churches and community partners.

Expected outcomes include improved academic performance, life skills competency, placement stability, emotional growth, and successful transitions to adulthood. Project Title: The Apprentice Program
Project Description:

ASF is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to providing at-risk and disadvantaged young adults (ages 18–21) with the technical and life skills necessary to secure meaningful careers. Seaport has impacted the lives of hundreds of young people in the Washington, DC metropolitan area since the Apprentice Program’s inception in 1993. Seaport Apprentices are young adults who are separated from education systems, the workforce, or their communities. They may have dropped out of school, been unable to find work, been involved in the criminal justice system, have mental or physical health challenges, and/or have family care-giving responsibilities. They typically come from unstable home environments. The goal of Seaport’s program is to provide its Apprentices with the capabilities needed to join the labor force or pursue more education and become long-term "connected" citizens who lead stable, healthy, economically secure lives. This goal is accomplished through Seaport’s Apprentice Program which includes instruction and activities that develop strong emotional health and the related soft skills needed for success at a job, in a family, or in any environment. Apprentices receive a $14/hour stipend during their participation in the program.
The Seaport Foundation serves its mission and its apprentices through the intensive, project-based learning of woodworking and boatbuilding, to develop a host of transferable, in-demand skills:
• Hard Skills: Woodworking, carpentry, boat building (for which there are no square corners!) mathematics, project management, and problem-solving.
• Soft Skills: Teamwork, communication, perseverance, punctuality, and professional conduct.
Our program is a pathway to employment and further education. We provide workplace experience, career exploration, coaching, and individualized support for identifying Seaport Apprentices’ best next steps. We have established relationships with local employers in the skilled trades and maritime industries, creating a pipeline from our workshop to internships, formal apprenticeships, further education, and well-paying, stable careers.
