Project Title: Play, Explore, Discover: HighScope STEM for Preschoolers
Project Description:

Child Development Learning Center (CDLC), a NAEYC-accredited, Parent Aware Four-Star preschool in Burnsville, Minnesota, requests $10,000 from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to complete full implementation of the HighScope Preschool Curriculum. Since 1971, CDLC has provided high-quality education to approximately 80 preschoolers annually. Our enrollment reflects the rich diversity of our community, including 27% BIPOC children, 8% English language learners, and families supported by state scholarship funding.

THE NEED: Every child deserves the strongest possible foundation for kindergarten success. Research consistently demonstrates that high-quality, structured early learning is among the greatest predictors of long-term academic achievement — yet BIPOC children and English language learners frequently arrive at kindergarten without the foundational skills they need to thrive.

THE SOLUTION: HighScope is one of the most extensively researched early childhood curricula in the world, with more than 50 years of evidence demonstrating its effectiveness. Its active learning approach and plan-do-review cycle empower children to take initiative, develop problem-solving skills, and build confidence through purposeful play and discovery. HighScope is recognized within NAEYC’s accreditation framework and essential to maintaining our Four-Star rating. A $10,000 grant from the Bailey Foundation initiated this work, funding our STEM Sprouts integration, which aligns seamlessly with HighScope’s framework. The Hermanowski Foundation’s investment completes implementation, ensuring every child receives consistent instruction across all developmental domains — literacy, mathematics, science, social-emotional development, and creative arts.

PROJECT INVESTMENT: This $10,000 request funds the HighScope Preschool Curriculum Kit ($1,944), educator professional development/certification ($3,900 per educator), and staff training and implementation support ($4,100). Professional development begins in early 2027, with full implementation by fall 2027.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES: By the end of the 2027–2028 school year, 100% of educators will be trained and 75% of students will demonstrate kindergarten readiness across all developmental domains — ensuring every child enters kindergarten confident, curious, and fully prepared to succeed.
