Project Title: Court Advocacy: Giving Children the Chance to Live Up to Their Full Potential
Project Description:

Henrico CASA exists to ensure that the most vulnerable children in our community, victims of abuse or neglect, have a voice in court as life-altering decisions are made about their futures.

When a child is referred to Henrico CASA by the Court, our program assigns a Court Appointed Special Advocate to stand beside that child for the duration of their case. Advocates build a trusting relationship with the child, conduct an independent assessment of their circumstances, and provide judges with critical information and recommendations focused solely on the child’s best interests.

Henrico CASA’s project will provide five children with a dedicated Advocate who will visit the child and submit court recommendations on their behalf for an entire year. The project goal is to mitigate the long-term impact of trauma while improving outcomes in education, permanency, and overall well-being. Your support will ultimately change the trajectory of these children’s lives.

Henrico County consistently leads Central Virginia in child abuse and neglect referrals and demand for CASA’s services has risen by 8–9% annually, underscoring the urgent need for effective intervention. Despite increases, Henrico CASA has served 100% of children referred since our inception in 1994. Last year, alone, we served 399 children. Our Advocates attended 453 court hearings and submitted 461 written reports, with 98% of CASA recommendations adopted by judges. Notably, 100% of cases closed with children in safe, long-term homes.

Henrico CASA delivers this impact through a highly cost-effective model. By recruiting, training, and supervising volunteer Advocates, CASA serves a child for approximately $1,500/year, a fraction of the cost of foster care or juvenile justice involvement.

Your support will ensure that five children receive the advocacy, stability, and voice they deserve at no cost to their families and at a pivotal moment in their lives.

Total Project Budget: $956,800

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): At Henrico CASA, we believe that access to high-quality advocacy should never depend on a family’s ability to pay. For this reason, CASA services are provided at no cost to the children and families we serve. We take our responsibility as stewards of community and foundation resources seriously. The funding sources below, as well as other funding from individual contributors and special events, are consistent from year to year and therefore projected to be similar for our July 2026-June 2027 fiscal year. As we await responses to our pending requests and continue to cultivate new partnerships, we remain steadfast in our dedication to ensuring that no child in our community is left without the advocacy support they deserve. Department of Criminal Justice Services and Victims of Crime Act $257,228 Robins Foundation $30,000 Moses Nunnally Foundation – Charitable Trust B $20,000 Altria $15,000 Wareheim Foundation $15,000 Henrico County $10,000 Havens Foundation $5,000 Titmus Foundation $4,500 Emily S. and Coleman A. Hunter Charitable Trust $3,750

Project Duration: July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027
Geographical Area Served: Henrico CASA’s cases originate within Henrico County’s court jurisdiction, but the children and families we serve live throughout the Greater Richmond Region and beyond. Henrico CASA’s reach spans more than 25 zip codes across urban, suburban, and rural communities in Virginia, reflecting the broad geographic and demographic scope of the need for advocacy services.
Age Group To Be Served: Henrico CASA serves children from birth through age 18 who have experienced significant adverse childhood experiences and are involved in abuse and neglect proceedings before the Court. These children often enter the child welfare system having already endured profound trauma that affects their safety, development, and long-term wellbeing. CASA’s intervention provides consistent, child-centered advocacy during this critical period, helping to mitigate the long-term negative outcomes commonly associated with unaddressed childhood trauma.

Project Title: General support for school with underrepresented students
Project Description:

PS/IS 187 Hudson Cliffs Parents Organization seeks a partnership with the Hermanowski Foundation to support the educational experience of the 750 students who attend PS/IS 187 Hudson Cliffs, a Pre-K through 8th-grade public school in Washington Heights. Our school serves a diverse community and is recognized for strong academics, dedicated teachers, engaged parents, and an inclusive culture grounded in equity, creativity, and engagement.

Students benefit from a rigorous academic foundation in literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies, complemented by music, film, visual arts, and physical education. Teaching across disciplines emphasizes inquiry, collaboration, and real-world connections, helping students build confidence, critical thinking skills, and readiness for middle school and beyond.

Beyond the classroom, PS/IS 187 is known for imaginative arts programming that reaches all grade levels. Students participate in visual art, music instruction, instrumental performance, theater, filmmaking, and creative writing. These programs culminate in performances, exhibitions, and screenings that bring the school community together and provide authentic platforms for student voice. Through the arts, students take creative risks, collaborate with peers, and learn to express complex ideas.

Hands-on science and experiential learning are equally central to the PS/IS 187 experience. A thriving school garden serves as a living classroom where students explore environmental science, nutrition, sustainability, and food systems in an urban setting.

After-school programming is a critical extension of this work. High-quality after-school opportunities allow students to deepen academic skills, explore interests in STEM, arts, music, theater, and sports, and build strong relationships with peers and mentors in a safe, structured environment, while providing stability for working families.

Equity is at the heart of our mission. A general operating grant would help sustain this ecosystem of learning and ensure all students have access to enriching opportunities.

Introduction and Organizational Information

Dear The Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation, Inc. and Trustees:

Fresno Miners Youth Football respectfully submits this Letter of Inquiry for consideration under the Foundation’s grant program. Our organization is a community-based nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that every child—regardless of income, gender, or background—has full access to high‑quality, year-round youth sports opportunities. Our mission, “Never Leave a Child Behind,” guides all aspects of our work.

Organizational Background

Founded to meet the growing need for safe, structured youth sports programs in Fresno’s low‑income neighborhoods, Fresno Miners Youth Football provides flag football, tackle football, and competitive cheer for children from kindergarten through 8th grade. We serve hundreds of youths annually with strong family engagement and an emphasis on character development, physical health, teamwork, and leadership.

In 2025, through community fundraising and partnerships, we raised $80,000 to successfully operate a full season. Demand for our programs—especially among girls—has surged, motivating our 2026 expansion to ensure full access for boys and girls in grades K–8 who would otherwise be unable to participate.

Our annual operating budget for 2026 is $120,000, which covers facilities, insurance, uniforms, field equipment, and administrative coordination necessary to keep all programs free for families.

We have built a consistent track record of impact by removing financial barriers, maintaining safe and inclusive programs, and engaging deeply with underserved neighborhoods.

Community Need: Fresno Demographics and Poverty Indicators

Fresno faces a combination of high poverty, low household income, and a large population of youth—conditions that significantly restrict access to organized sports.

Economic Hardship and Child Poverty

Fresno’s child poverty rate is 28%, far higher than California’s average.

The overall poverty rate is 19.5%, also much higher than statewide rates.

A separate 2023 estimate places Fresno’s poverty rate even higher at 20.9%, confirming persistent need.

Household Income Below State Average

Fresno’s median household income ranges between $27,603 and $31,434, significantly below California’s overall median income.

A Young, Diverse Population

Fresno County’s population includes 27.2% under age 18, indicating a high need for youth programs.

Boys and Girls ages 5–14 represent approximately 15–16% of the county population.

Fresno is 56.44% Hispanic/Latino, with many families confronting significant socioeconomic barriers.

Implications for Youth Sports

These indicators demonstrate a profound need for free, accessible youth sports, particularly for kids who experience compounded barriers—economic, cultural, and structural. Many families cannot afford registration fees, equipment costs, travel expenses, or insurance, leaving thousands of boys and girls without opportunities for healthy development, physical activity, and mentorship.

Fresno Miners is uniquely positioned to address these gaps.

Project Title: SPARK Summer STEM Camp
Project Description:

For many Lincoln, NE families, summer is not a season of enrichment but a period of stress. With 79% of children ages 6 to 17 living in households where all parents are working, access to affordable, reliable summer care is essential. Yet costs continue to rise faster than wages, and nearly 30 percent of local households live at or near the federal poverty level. For these families, a typical $300 weekly camp fee is simply out of reach. This request is to support our SPARK Scholarship fund.

This gap has consequences. Children without access to structured, high quality summer learning are more likely to experience academic loss, fall behind peers, and disengage from learning. In Nebraska, unmet need has grown steadily, with 56% of families reporting they could not enroll their child in summer programming by 2025, most often due to cost and access barriers.

To address this challenge, the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools created Spark Summer Learning, a nine-week, licensed STEAM program for elementary students. Spark provides hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math through weekly themes such as robotics, food science, environmental studies, animation, and aeronautics. Students engage with local STEAM professionals, explore community learning sites, and build curiosity and confidence in a safe, nurturing environment. Spark also supports workforce stability by employing Lincoln Public Schools teachers during the summer.

In summer 2026, Spark will serve up to 150 (350 unique students) students per week across nine weeks. Approximately 45% of participants will receive scholarships based on Free and Reduced Lunch eligibility and income thresholds. By removing financial barriers, Spark ensures that income does not determine access to high quality summer learning, helping students sustain academic skills, families remain stable, and Lincoln’s future workforce grow stronger.

Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: KID smART Summer Camps: Literacy and STEAM
Project Description:

KID smART will launch two innovative summer camps in summer 2026 that address critical learning gaps for K-8 students in New Orleans: Wordplay! (literacy-focused) and STEAMY (STEAM-focused). Both camps use arts integration to make learning joyful, engaging, and effective for students who experience significant summer learning loss.

Wordplay! Literacy Camp uses theatre, storytelling, creative writing, and performance to build reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing skills, and oral communication. Students explore diverse texts, create original stories and monologues, and perform for families. Through drama games, character development, and collaborative writing, students strengthen literacy skills while discovering the power of their own voices.

STEAMY Camp integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math through hands-on creative projects. Students explore scientific concepts through visual arts, build engineering solutions using creative problem-solving, and discover mathematical patterns in music and movement. Digital media, sculpture, and performance become vehicles for understanding STEM concepts, making abstract ideas concrete and accessible.

Both camps serve 60 students total (30 per camp) for one week each in summer 2026. We use a sliding-scale tuition model ensuring accessibility for families regardless of income. Many participants come from under-resourced schools where summer programming is limited or nonexistent.

Our approach is grounded in 26 years of experience delivering arts-integrated education in New Orleans public schools. We know that arts integration works: it increases engagement, deepens understanding, and makes learning culturally responsive and joyful. Our teaching artists are experienced educators trained in our proven AXIS framework, which seamlessly integrates arts across academic content.

This $10,000 grant will fund teaching artist salaries, art supplies and materials, snacks, and program coordination for both camps. Upon completion, we will provide a comprehensive evaluation report including student attendance, family feedback, student work samples, and teaching artist reflections.

KID smART summer camps demonstrate that learning can be rigorous, joyful, and transformative when creativity is at the center.

Project Title: The King’s Academy – Education and Wraparound Services for Children in South Dallas
Project Description:

The King’s Academy (TKA) exists to meet the urgent educational and social needs of children in South Dallas, one of the most under-resourced communities in Dallas County. Dallas has the highest childhood poverty rate in the nation at 38%, and within the 75215-zip code, 33% of adults lack a high school diploma. Nearly half of local children are projected to face incarceration before age 25, and many enter school significantly behind academically due to underperforming schools, excessive absenteeism, exposure to trauma, and limited access to basic resources. The South Dallas community is both a food desert and an education desert, where generational poverty and systemic barriers severely restrict opportunities for children.
TKA provides an affordable, Christ-centered alternative for families seeking a rigorous, faith-based education. We currently serve students in PreK3–6th grade (girls and boys,100% children of color; 74% living at or below the poverty line) and plan to expand by one grade each year until reaching 12th grade. Many of our children are from single-parent homes, impacted by incarceration and academic deficiencies upon enrollment. These students need a school that will help them overcome obstacles to learning and meet their varied academic needs through differentiated instruction, smaller classes, family support, and a strong social/emotional program. Our small class sizes and wraparound model address students’ academic, emotional, and physical needs through early literacy intervention, tutoring, STEM curriculum, social-emotional learning, nutritious meals, transportation, counseling referrals, and family support. By integrating academic excellence with holistic care—and ensuring financial barriers never hinder access—TKA equips students to grow in confidence, character, and faith. Ultimately, TKA is breaking cycles of poverty, low educational attainment, food insecurity, and incarceration by preparing children not only for college and career, but for a life of purpose and impact.

Project Title: Elevating Navajo Youth
Project Description:

In Window Rock, Arizona, the heart of the Navajo Nation, young people grow up carrying both deep cultural strength and the heavy weight of isolation, poverty, and intergenerational trauma. Many students travel long distances to school, lack access to positive adult support, and struggle to imagine a future beyond survival. Elevate Navajo exists to change that story.

Elevate Navajo partners directly with local public schools to embed full-time, salaried Teacher-Mentors inside the school day and far beyond it. These Teacher-Mentors are not visitors or short-term program staff. They are trusted adults, from the same communities as the students they serve, who teach accredited classes focused on leadership, character, and employability skills while building multi-year mentoring relationships that extend after school, on weekends, and through the summer.

In the classroom, students develop confidence, communication skills, goal-setting habits, and a sense of purpose. Outside the classroom, Teacher-Mentors show up consistently, helping students navigate academic challenges, family responsibilities, grief, and self-doubt. They attend games and ceremonies, meet families, take students on outdoor adventures, and guide them through post-secondary planning, job readiness, and career exploration.

A unique component of Elevate Navajo is Little Elevate, where high school students practice leadership by mentoring younger students, strengthening responsibility, empathy, and pride in their own community.

The results are real and measurable. Before Elevate Navajo’s partnership, only 55% of participating students were on track to graduate. After three semesters, 91% are now on track, because someone noticed them, believed in them, and stayed.

General operating support allows Elevate Navajo to sustain these life-changing relationships, respond flexibly to student needs, and remain a steady presence in a place where consistency can change everything.
