Organizational Background
Founded to meet the growing need for safe, structured youth sports programs in Fresno’s low‑income neighborhoods, Fresno Miners Youth Football provides flag football, tackle football, and competitive cheer for children from kindergarten through 8th grade. We serve hundreds of youths annually with strong family engagement and an emphasis on character development, physical health, teamwork, and leadership.
In 2025, through community fundraising and partnerships, we raised $80,000 to successfully operate a full season. Demand for our programs—especially among girls—has surged, motivating our 2026 expansion to ensure full access for boys and girls in grades K–8 who would otherwise be unable to participate.
Our annual operating budget for 2026 is $120,000, which covers facilities, insurance, uniforms, field equipment, and administrative coordination necessary to keep all programs free for families.
We have built a consistent track record of impact by removing financial barriers, maintaining safe and inclusive programs, and engaging deeply with underserved neighborhoods.
Community Need: Fresno Demographics and Poverty Indicators
Fresno faces a combination of high poverty, low household income, and a large population of youth—conditions that significantly restrict access to organized sports.
Economic Hardship and Child Poverty
Fresno’s child poverty rate is 28%, far higher than California’s average.
The overall poverty rate is 19.5%, also much higher than statewide rates.
A separate 2023 estimate places Fresno’s poverty rate even higher at 20.9%, confirming persistent need.
Household Income Below State Average
Fresno’s median household income ranges between $27,603 and $31,434, significantly below California’s overall median income.
A Young, Diverse Population
Fresno County’s population includes 27.2% under age 18, indicating a high need for youth programs.
Boys and Girls ages 5–14 represent approximately 15–16% of the county population.
Fresno is 56.44% Hispanic/Latino, with many families confronting significant socioeconomic barriers.
Implications for Youth Sports
These indicators demonstrate a profound need for free, accessible youth sports, particularly for kids who experience compounded barriers—economic, cultural, and structural. Many families cannot afford registration fees, equipment costs, travel expenses, or insurance, leaving thousands of boys and girls without opportunities for healthy development, physical activity, and mentorship.
Fresno Miners is uniquely positioned to address these gaps.
