Project Title: Core Support for NAS Infants
Project Description:

Maddie’s Place provides expert, trauma-informed care for infants up to 12 months old who have been exposed to substances in utero and are experiencing Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Our approach centers on non-pharmacologic, evidence-based treatment in a nurturing, homelike environment—one designed to promote healing, bonding, and long-term development.

Our model recognizes that healing doesn’t happen in isolation. A core component of our care is the parent-infant dyad—because we believe moms are their baby’s best medicine, and babies are often the best medicine for a mom in recovery. We provide free room and board, peer support, and wraparound services to parents and caregivers, helping families stabilize, reconnect, and prepare for life after discharge.

Since opening in 2022, Maddie’s Place has served 108 infants and 63 parents onsite with many more caregivers receiving case management support. A grant from the Hermanowski Foundation would directly fund our infant care operations, ensuring that every baby receives the soothing, attentive care they need to thrive.

Maddie’s Place represents an innovative, cost-effective model of care that has the potential to be replicated in communities across the country—especially as rates of opioid use and NAS continue to rise. Compared to traditional hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Units, Maddie’s Place delivers specialized infant care at 75–80% lower cost, while achieving positive outcomes in a calm, developmentally supportive setting.

Recent research confirms that family-centered care and early supportive interventions for opioid-exposed infants improve developmental outcomes and reduce hospital stays (Frontiers in Pediatrics, 2022). Your support would help Maddie’s Place continue giving vulnerable newborns the strongest, healthiest start in life.

Project Title: Positive Behavior Support Launch at Child Care Facility for At-risk Children
Project Description:

Our project focuses on The KIDS Place in McLouth, a KDHE-licensed childcare facility operated by IBT since 2012. In addition to offering affordable childcare and early education, The KIDS Place is unique in the region in its focus on children with social, emotional and developmental challenges. Families travel many miles to bring their children to The KIDS Place. 65% of enrolled children present behavior issues not covered by insurance; many are in the foster care system.

Our project will establish the research-based behavior management approach, Positive Behavior Support (PBS). PBS is a preventative approach for changing a child’s behavior. It promotes understanding why the child has challenging behaviors and provides a method of teaching the child new skills to replace the challenging behaviors. When provided with fidelity, PBS remediates 80% of challenging behaviors.

We seek $6,000 in funding to provide PBS training to 10 lead staff , $3,000 for reinforcement materials used in all four classrooms and $1,000 for quarterly educational events on PBS for parents. The project period is 12 months, but the effect will be lasting.

This project will improve the social and emotional development of the children we serve, increase classroom safety and create a more productive, healthier learning environment. It supports staff retention by providing an effective behavior management tool and includes training for parents and caregivers.

Project Title: Catalyst Leadership Academy 2026 Cohort
Project Description:

Catalyst Youth Network seeks a $10,000 grant to expand its Catalyst Leadership Academy, a yearlong initiative designed to empower youth ages 14–18 in Oakland who are furthest from traditional support systems.

The Leadership Academy helps high school students develop confidence, purpose, and the tools to lead in their schools and communities. Through weekly peer cohorts, guided self-reflection, hands-on projects, and volunteer-led workshops, students gain experience in communication, teamwork, goal setting, and emotional intelligence. The program also includes college and career readiness support, such as resume coaching, mock interviews, and career exploration activities.

This grant will enable us to expand the Leadership Academy to serve 15 additional students in 2026, with funds used for:
• Program materials (journals, project supplies, career readiness kits)
• Leadership retreat transportation and meals
• Healthy snacks and bus passes for weekly sessions
• Youth stipends for completing capstone leadership projects

Each participant will complete a student-led capstone project that serves their school or neighborhood—turning leadership skills into real-world impact. These projects build civic engagement and show students they have the power to create change.

The Academy is volunteer-facilitated by trained mentors, community leaders, and alumni, and is offered at no cost to students. For many, it’s the first time they’ve been recognized as leaders.

We seek to transform the lives of children and young adults by giving them access to tools, relationships, and opportunities that help them grow into their full potential.

Project Title: St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children
Project Description:

This year, TIAGD will expand and strengthen our active partnership with St. Christopher’s Hospital. We will add a vital role to our services: a TIAGD NICU Family Advocate (NFA) dedicated to serving NICU families with tailored support upon admission. The families living in the areas served by St. Christopher’s Hospital in Philadelphia often do not have the safety net required to make it through this challenge.

We immediately provide a care package that includes tangible, relevant items and our advocacy checklist to help parents right away in making daunting decisions regarding their newborn’s care.

Beyond that, we provide whatever is needed to smooth the transition to NICU life. If the family needs funds to cover utilities, rent, special supplies or travel, we work with the hospital to provide this in-kind support through our Vital Need Support program. We provide vital baby supplies, including but not limited to cribs, pack n plays, bottles, clothing, etc. We address any housing instability and/or food insecurity that threatens to negatively impact the newborn or other children in the home.

The tailored resources, connections, guidance and hope that our programs provide directly address disparities in social determinants of health and ensure the wellbeing of children during and beyond the NICU.

“Premature birth is a traumatic event that affect everyday lives.  It poses a threat to the physical integrity of the mother and a threat to the integrity of a loved one, the baby.

This project is designed to expand our reach within St. Christopher’s in order to increase both the number of NICU family admissions served and to deepen our impact on those we reach. Our purpose is to ensure the ability of families to thrive, despite the challenge of NICU admission and to promote the healthy development and greater well-being of children.

Project Title: Urban Leadership Training and Development
Project Description:

Urban Youth Workers Institute (UYWI) is committed to developing urban leaders to serve as role models for youth, guiding them toward transformed lives through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our mission is to fuel a movement of urban leaders who will restore and rebuild broken communities globally. UYWI serves multi-ethnic leaders aged 20-40 working in urban churches and youth-serving organizations, providing resources, training, and support to counteract isolation, burnout, and lack of development opportunities.

Since 2020, UYWI has focused on equipping healthy, high-capacity, high-impact leaders through core programs, including digital leadership resources, UYWI Certification Program, UYWI Coaching Program, Fuel Networks, Congregational Leadership Development Program, and Organizational Leadership Development Program. Despite significant progress—training nearly 7,000 leaders who have reached over 300,000 youth—the need remains vast. The rapidly diversifying U.S. population and urban youth’s socio-economic and spiritual challenges emphasize the urgency of our work.

By 2025, UYWI aims to expand its reach fivefold, increasing the number of trained leaders, cohorts, networks, and overall impact. Urban youth face unprecedented struggles, including poverty, violence, mental health crises, and a mass departure from the Church. Without access to well-trained mentors, many are left without guidance. UYWI bridges this gap by empowering youth workers with knowledge, tools, and leadership frameworks to engage and disciple the next generation effectively.

We seek strategic partnerships to train 500 additional urban leaders this year, adding to the 7,000 already developed. At $3,500 per leader annually, partners play a crucial role in supporting and sustaining this transformative mission. Together, we can equip urban youth workers to be healthy, high-capacity, and high-impact leaders, ensuring that future generations experience the Gospel in tangible ways. Join us in shaping the future of urban ministry and empowering the next wave of transformational leaders.

Today’s Date: March 28, 2025
Requested Amount: $8,000

Project Title: Global Competence, Literacy, and Independent Learning Program: Expanding the Library
Project Description:

We respectfully request $8,000 to support the expansion of our school library, which will directly benefit all of our students by promoting literacy, global competence, and independent learning. About 60% of our nearly 800 students are low-income, 40% are global majority students (Latino, Black, mixed race), and 12% are students with disabilities. This grant would be used to acquire books that reflect a wide range of cultures, languages, and perspectives, aligned to our school’s focus on international education and global awareness.
Spokane International Academy (SIA) is a public, nonprofit charter school in Spokane, Washington, serving students from kindergarten through high school. As the only internationally-focused school in Spokane, a region that is landlocked and surrounded by rural communities, SIA provides students with opportunities they would not otherwise access. Our mission is to promote the academic skills, habits of mind, and global competence necessary to thrive in an interconnected world.
A well-resourced library complements our initiatives, such as Habits of Mind, which encourage critical thinking and problem-solving; Field Studies, which help students connect classroom learning to real-world experiences; and Spanish language instruction, which fosters cultural awareness and bilingualism.
By supporting both independent exploration and guided learning, an expanded library collection will prepare students to lead, advocate, and act as thoughtful, informed citizens who can drive positive change on a global scale. SIA is currently seeking funding partners for a comprehensive library expansion project including the expansion of resources, upgrading of bookshelves and equipment/furnishings, and expansion of our e-reader collection. This grant will help us with this initiative by supporting the expansion of our physical and digital book collection.
We hope the Foundation will consider this investment in the future of SIA’s students as we build a new generation of leaders who will shape and improve the world around them.
