Project Title: Global Competence, Literacy, and Independent Learning Program: Expanding the Library
Project Description:
We respectfully request $8,000 to support the expansion of our school library, which will directly benefit all of our students by promoting literacy, global competence, and independent learning. About 60% of our nearly 800 students are low-income, 40% are global majority students (Latino, Black, mixed race), and 12% are students with disabilities. This grant would be used to acquire books that reflect a wide range of cultures, languages, and perspectives, aligned to our school’s focus on international education and global awareness.
Spokane International Academy (SIA) is a public, nonprofit charter school in Spokane, Washington, serving students from kindergarten through high school. As the only internationally-focused school in Spokane, a region that is landlocked and surrounded by rural communities, SIA provides students with opportunities they would not otherwise access. Our mission is to promote the academic skills, habits of mind, and global competence necessary to thrive in an interconnected world.
A well-resourced library complements our initiatives, such as Habits of Mind, which encourage critical thinking and problem-solving; Field Studies, which help students connect classroom learning to real-world experiences; and Spanish language instruction, which fosters cultural awareness and bilingualism.
By supporting both independent exploration and guided learning, an expanded library collection will prepare students to lead, advocate, and act as thoughtful, informed citizens who can drive positive change on a global scale. SIA is currently seeking funding partners for a comprehensive library expansion project including the expansion of resources, upgrading of bookshelves and equipment/furnishings, and expansion of our e-reader collection. This grant will help us with this initiative by supporting the expansion of our physical and digital book collection.
We hope the Foundation will consider this investment in the future of SIA’s students as we build a new generation of leaders who will shape and improve the world around them.
