Project Title: Urban Ranger Corps
Project Description:
Our mission is to prepare at-risk inner-city youth for responsible and productive futures through a program of disciplined work experience and service to their community; leadership development; and individualized planning for post-High School careers.
All youth served by URC are young men of color. Rangers enrolled in the program are in grades 6 – 12 and programming is geared to the various age levels , educational needs, and age-related life skills, including mentoring sessions designed to assist our rangers navigate through school and life, acknowledging the issues faced by African-American males. Issues that may not be faced by many non-minority communities. All programs and activities are designed to offset some of the major problems affecting young men of color in the metropolitan area, including mentoring to ensure they achieve passing grades and graduate; development/implementation of each ranger’s individual career plans; and ways to avoid involvement in criminal activities.
URC offers year-round programmng to 150 students. Since its inception, URC has worked with more than 1123 young men. All the youth we serve live in high-risk Kansas City neighborhoods and are exposed to prevalent criminogenic factors that include neighborhood economic deprivation: high crime and violence rates; availability of drugs; low expectations/aspirations for school; and chronic absenteeism. 90% attend Kansas City, MO or Kansas City, KS middle or high schools. All are African American; 92% are from single parent, low income households, 97.3% maintain GPA’s of 2.0 or higher and 20% maintain GPA’s of 3.0 or higher; 100% attend school regularly, and missing no more than 5 days in a school year. On average, there are four or five high schools seniors enrolled each program year, with the majority graduating and going on to higher education, beginning a career, or entering the military.
