Project Title: Positive Behavior Support Launch at Child Care Facility for At-risk Children
Project Description:
Our project focuses on The KIDS Place in McLouth, a KDHE-licensed childcare facility operated by IBT since 2012. In addition to offering affordable childcare and early education, The KIDS Place is unique in the region in its focus on children with social, emotional and developmental challenges. Families travel many miles to bring their children to The KIDS Place. 65% of enrolled children present behavior issues not covered by insurance; many are in the foster care system.
Our project will establish the research-based behavior management approach, Positive Behavior Support (PBS). PBS is a preventative approach for changing a child’s behavior. It promotes understanding why the child has challenging behaviors and provides a method of teaching the child new skills to replace the challenging behaviors. When provided with fidelity, PBS remediates 80% of challenging behaviors.
We seek $6,000 in funding to provide PBS training to 10 lead staff , $3,000 for reinforcement materials used in all four classrooms and $1,000 for quarterly educational events on PBS for parents. The project period is 12 months, but the effect will be lasting.
This project will improve the social and emotional development of the children we serve, increase classroom safety and create a more productive, healthier learning environment. It supports staff retention by providing an effective behavior management tool and includes training for parents and caregivers.
