Project Title: Lobby Renovation Project
Project Description:

The ArtsView Children’s Theatre is undergoing a $50,000 lobby renovation project combining the Ann Reeves room to create a larger, more accessible lobby area. The current lobby is too small, and ticket holders often have to wait outside in extreme weather conditions before entering the theatre. The renovation project will provide a more comfortable and spacious area for waiting, and improve accessibility for all visitors. This will enable the theatre to offer audiences a more welcoming and enjoyable experience. Additionally, the project will create a more visually appealing entrance to the theatre, attracting new visitors and creating a positive first impression. The new space will allow for more efficient traffic flow, making it easier for visitors to navigate the lobby area. The ArtsView Children’s Theatre renovation project is a valuable and necessary improvement that will provide visitors with a more inclusive, enjoyable, and efficient theatre experience.

Project Title: Supporting early childhood literacy from birth through Books for Babies (BFB) program’s NICU Program
Project Description:

We are requesting support for BFB’s NICU Project, which gives literacy packets to parents of babies being treated at three NICUs in Hartford County. Parents receive two baby board books, a copy of our First Guide to Parents of Newborns, and an invitation to read to their babies while visiting their child in the NICU.
According to the CT Department of Public Health data, 839 babies born in 2020 were admitted to NICU units in Hartford County. The number is significant because research indicates that preterm babies, the majority of whom are admitted to NICU, are shown to have language development issues (Reidy et al, 2013). However, research also shows that reading to NICU babies positively influences language development (Neri et al, 2021). Parents can experience a sense of normalcy and bond with their babies when they read, talk, and sing to them while they are in the NICU. Reading exposes babies to the calming, soothing sound of their parent’s voices, in an environment that is clinical and dominated by the whir of machines.
Sharing books helps babies (including very sick babies) form important brain connections. Our NICU Project materials also invite parents to register for Follow-Up, which mails more literacy information and baby books to homes when babies are 3 months and 12 months old. In the fiscal year 2022, we distributed more than 600 books to families of 300 plus newborn babies who were admitted to Connecticut Children’s Hospitals NICUs in Hartford and Farmington. In January 2023, our NICU project expanded to families of babies admitted to the Hospital of Central Connecticut’s NICU.

The NICU project helps parents establish book-sharing routines with their babies, which we hope will continue at home once the babies are discharged.

Project Title: Indianapolis Art Center Youth Community Outreach Programs
Project Description:

Art, creativity, and self-expression hold the power to transform individuals and communities alike. Through a diverse offering of studio art education classes, community outreach programs, and contemporary art exhibitions available at no cost to the public, the Indianapolis Art Center’s mission is to inspire creative expression in all people.

ArtReach is a free afterschool and summer program designed to provide high-quality art education to 1,100+ youth ages 5-18 living in underserved areas of Indianapolis, who often lack consistent access to arts education or public art. ArtReach is offered at up 20 partner sites including schools, domestic violence shelters, transitional housing, and community centers, with 90% of students qualifying for free or reduced-cost lunch. Led by professional teaching artists, students explore artistic media such as watercolors, pencil and charcoal drawings, pastels, clay, jewelry, and textiles.

Supportive Mentoring through Art (SMART) provides Make It Take It classes at the Art Center for youth and mentors matched through Big Brothers Big Sisters to experiment in different mediums with a variety of tools and materials in workshop formats. SMART offers creative opportunities for youth and mentors to work together while strengthening the bond between youth and their adult mentors.

The Teen Art Council (TAC) is a free, supportive group for youth ages 13-18 to participate in visual art outside the classroom. TAC is the most student-driven of the Art Center’s youth programs, providing advanced opportunities for students who want to develop their creative skills and leadership experience. TAC members work with peers and professional artists to develop and deliver art projects and programs that engage teen audiences.

In addition to growing their skills as artists, Art Center programs help students to develop many of today’s most desirable soft skills, such as creativity, interpersonal communication, ad-hoc problem solving, critical thinking, and empathy.

Project Title: Spark! Masterclass and Pedagogy Clinics
Project Description:

Spark Silicon Valley designed it’s Masterclass and Pedagogy Series to give students in underserved communities the opportunity to receive high level instruction from renown music educators and provide music educators in these same communities the opportunity to learn current and best practices in the music education space. Schools in communities of color and low socioeconomic communities are forced to use resources to meet the basic needs of their schools. When it comes to giving these students the opportunities participate in activities that enhance the student and educator experience, there are not enough dollars to go around to facilitate this need. Also, lack of transportation to these events limits participation of young artists from the communities we serve.

With the Spark! Masterclass and Pedagogy Series, we will eliminate the barriers that inhibit students in our target communities from participating in masterclasses offered in Santa Clara and neighboring counties. First, we will be able to bring these opportunities and resources directly to the communities and students that are consistently unable to participate. Students will not have to find rides to and from these activities or, worse yet, catch public transit with cumbersome instruments. Second, by providing these opportunities free of charge, students in our target communities will be able to participate free from the barrier of expense. Also, teachers in underserved and underrepresented communities will gain access to current instructional practices without placing pressure on their administrators to prioritize resources and services.

Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: STAR Club Program
Project Description:

Millwood Impact has a close partnership with the West Valley School District and the district is aware of the needs of kids and families within the community. Because of these relationships, Millwood Impact has been made aware of the needs by the school counselors, teachers, and administrators. It was the staff at the schools and the West Valley Superintendent that shared that after-school programs were a major need in this community. Most of these students come from poverty of one form or another, many are food insecure, and some come from single parent households. These students are the ones that the staff see as needing the most social, emotional, and academic needs.

This foundation in working directly with West Valley School District is what helped us form STAR Club to what it is today. We serve 32 elementary aged students from 2 different schools, 4 times a week. These students are in our program 2 hours each afternoon where they learn life skills like cooking, sewing, and gardening, along with working on STEAM and specific art and craft projects. Everything we do is with the purpose of sparking curiosity and providing a safe space for students to grow, learn, and be connected to a handful of strong, kind, and committed adults. This has already been proven that STAR Club has helped these students in their social, emotional, and academic selves.

These funds would help us fund the continued program costs going into next fall that it takes to invest in these kids and their families, with the possibility of expanding to even more students if funding is in place. Our mission aligns with your foundation’s goal of providing these kids with the necessary tools to succeed and to achieve their full potential.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3-28-2023
Requested Amount: 7,500

Project Title: Students Needs Support Project
Project Description:

Eliada Academy provides for the educational needs of elementary through high school students located in and around Buncombe County, North Carolina who are enrolled in Eliada’s Residential and Day Treatment Programs. The youth served at Eliada Academy have numerous barriers to social inclusion, success, and overall well-being. The majority have experienced some form of abuse and neglect, around half have individualized education plans, and every student has some form of diagnosis (disability, mental health, etc.). Case managers provide daily contact with parents to support treatment, facilitate communication of progress or needs, and coordinate student transition back to public schools. Class curriculum is performed in accordance with NC standards for core curriculum so that they can receive the mental health assistance needed without falling behind on their education.
Our Academy best serves students in Middle and Elementary school. Since we are a small institution, it is difficult for our teachers to offer a wide variety of courses for high school students. Therefore, we are proposing a Students Needs Support project to cover the expenses of additional online classes that can offer a more diverse educational experience. This will not only help keep our high school students on track with their education but also allow them to pursue individual interests. These classes can be used for electives and will transfer back to their public school once leaving Eliada’s care. We also have identified a need for SAT and ACT preparation materials to prepare them for crucial tests and encourage further academic participation (i.e., the pursuit of higher education). These additional components to Eliada’s Academy aim to improve interest in academics and the development of career goals.

Total Project Budget: 10,500

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Eliada Academy is entirely funded by Government Contracts, State Services, and Medicaid. The Student Needs Support Project will be funded by grant sources and classes will be provided as funds are available. The more funds we are able to acquire, the more virtual opportunities we can provide to our students. Other potential sources include Dollar General Literacy Grant, the Carolina Panthers Foundation, Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation, and the Chisolm Foundation.

Project Title: Gardening at Baldwin Academy Wholeness Therapy
Project Description:

Baldwin Academy — a private, non-profit preschool and elementary school serving primarily African American and low-income families in Fort Lauderdale, FL — offers therapy and counseling to its students through Baldwin Academy Wholeness Therapy, a partnership with the Healing Arts Institute of South Florida. The goal of Wholeness Therapy is to help Baldwin students develop social-emotional learning and coping skills to address their trauma and teach them healthy ways of expressing various types of emotions. Gardening is one of the coping skills children learn. As a regular practice, garden therapy, aka horticulture therapy, can help relieve stress, anxiety, and depression. Horticulture therapy also helps improve memory, cognitive abilities, task initiation, language skills, and socialization. Baldwin Academy seeks to expand the gardening component of Wholeness Therapy, through which students learn about the role nutritional food plays in their overall health and well-being by growing their own fruits and vegetables. Tending a community garden provides the children with skills they can use for the rest of their lives and teach others in their families and neighborhoods. Baldwin Academy would use funds from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to support landscaping, re-soiling and fertilizing the garden; building screens for the garden; and installing a new indoor hydroponic garden.

Project Title: 5-K STEM Accelerator: Mindset, Skills & Access Classes, Fall Quarter
Project Description:

Home to Silicon Valley, San Mateo County is a textbook case of inequality and a resulting digital divide. Communities—especially those of color—are bracketed by wealth and poverty. The uneven distribution of community resources yields inequality and segregation, with many low-income youths falling through the cracks. Our partnership with The Primary School in East Palo Alto, is an attempting to bridge the gap between BIPOC youth and high-quality, culturally relevant STEM learning experiences. Our pilot program launched last fall, and is serving over 700 students this school year. The program budget covers the costs of classroom setup, student technology support, program supplies, and instructor salaries.

Each class takes a three-pronged approach: Shaping mindsets, building skills, and increasing access. Mindset work exposes students to teachers and mentors who represent them—providing a relatable model for success. Mindset shifts change the way that learners perceive and relate to technology, opening up career paths previously unimaginable. Building skills teaches students to use STEM concepts and tools—the first step toward technical literacy and advancement. Last, we increase access to innovation and networks of innovators, facilitating relationships that increase students’ odds of pursuing higher education in STEM fields.

During the school year, StreetCode teaches 45 minute STEM classes to K–5 grade students twice per week per class. Our instructors provide students with hands-on makerspace and computational thinking programs following the class schedule. We provide all of the materials and equipment needed to conduct courses and complete projects.

StreetCode instructors are the cornerstone of our organization, and the funding we are requesting will help pay the salaries of the four full-time StreetCode staff members who will be teaching this program over the coming year. While we are fortunate to be partially funded for this project, we still have a funding gap that we are trying to shore up.

Travis Manion Foundation’s signature military veteran-led youth mentorship program is Character Does Matter (CDM). Character Does Matter represents the culmination of TMF’s mission, leveraging the skills of our nation’s military community as role models, educating youth on character and leadership. The basis of all Travis Manion Foundation programming and the Character Does Matter curriculum is Positive Psychology, a field dedicated to studying factors that contribute to individual and community well-being and thriving. Individuals involved with CDM are empowered to improve their well-being by finding meaning and purpose in their lives, developing meaningful relationships, and fully engaging in activities. Through CDM, veterans inspire students, with a focus on fourth through twelfth grades, to live a life of service, leadership, and character.

Travis Manion Foundation is requesting a $10,000 commitment from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to continue our impactful partnership in 2024. Funds will support the continued program execution and growth of the Character Does Matter program in Florida. Specifically, this project will fund program supplies, ongoing curriculum development, enhanced CDM Veteran Mentor trainings, and experiential learning challenges within the CDM program.
