Project Title: Spark! Masterclass and Pedagogy Clinics
Project Description:
Spark Silicon Valley designed it’s Masterclass and Pedagogy Series to give students in underserved communities the opportunity to receive high level instruction from renown music educators and provide music educators in these same communities the opportunity to learn current and best practices in the music education space. Schools in communities of color and low socioeconomic communities are forced to use resources to meet the basic needs of their schools. When it comes to giving these students the opportunities participate in activities that enhance the student and educator experience, there are not enough dollars to go around to facilitate this need. Also, lack of transportation to these events limits participation of young artists from the communities we serve.
With the Spark! Masterclass and Pedagogy Series, we will eliminate the barriers that inhibit students in our target communities from participating in masterclasses offered in Santa Clara and neighboring counties. First, we will be able to bring these opportunities and resources directly to the communities and students that are consistently unable to participate. Students will not have to find rides to and from these activities or, worse yet, catch public transit with cumbersome instruments. Second, by providing these opportunities free of charge, students in our target communities will be able to participate free from the barrier of expense. Also, teachers in underserved and underrepresented communities will gain access to current instructional practices without placing pressure on their administrators to prioritize resources and services.
