Project Title: Gardening at Baldwin Academy Wholeness Therapy
Project Description:

Baldwin Academy — a private, non-profit preschool and elementary school serving primarily African American and low-income families in Fort Lauderdale, FL — offers therapy and counseling to its students through Baldwin Academy Wholeness Therapy, a partnership with the Healing Arts Institute of South Florida. The goal of Wholeness Therapy is to help Baldwin students develop social-emotional learning and coping skills to address their trauma and teach them healthy ways of expressing various types of emotions. Gardening is one of the coping skills children learn. As a regular practice, garden therapy, aka horticulture therapy, can help relieve stress, anxiety, and depression. Horticulture therapy also helps improve memory, cognitive abilities, task initiation, language skills, and socialization. Baldwin Academy seeks to expand the gardening component of Wholeness Therapy, through which students learn about the role nutritional food plays in their overall health and well-being by growing their own fruits and vegetables. Tending a community garden provides the children with skills they can use for the rest of their lives and teach others in their families and neighborhoods. Baldwin Academy would use funds from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to support landscaping, re-soiling and fertilizing the garden; building screens for the garden; and installing a new indoor hydroponic garden.
