Project Title: Multi-Sensory Program
Project Description:

As a valuable educational resource for our community’s most vulnerable families, inclusion and accessibility have always been central to our mission at Miami Children’s Museum. Families with children with developmental disabilities and in need of programming adapted to diverse learning styles have been able to rely on us to provide inclusive educational enrichment opportunities. Currently, the Museum offers Sensory Friendly Saturdays, a monthly program when the Museum opens early to provide two dedicated hours of activities with a modified and supportive environment. This program was created for children with global developmental delays, sensory processing disabilities, or on the autism spectrum. Adjustments to the Museum’s exhibit during the program include limiting crowds, dimming the lights, and lowering the sounds throughout the galleries. The Museum education team provides adaptive art activities that explore various cultures and art and includes a live theater performance. The Museum seeks support to expand its current multi-sensory program and has developed an 18-month plan to meet the demands of the South Florida disability community. Funding from The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation would support (1) enhancement of the monthly Sensory Friendly Saturday program with contracted certified therapeutic professionals such as Applied Behavior Analysts, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Art Therapist, and Music Therapist; (2) break the financial barriers by providing free admission for Sensory Friendly Saturday programs; (3) host an Autism Awareness Month community program in April 2022, including resources designed to increase the understanding of people on the autism spectrum and featuring professional artists that represent the autism community; and (4) purchase new therapeutic tools to further develop our guest’s experience, and are aligned with the Museum’s new standards of wellness due to COVID-19. Marketing efforts to promote the new programming will include personal outreaches to the Museum’s partners such as The Victory Center and others.

Project Title: School Anti-Discrimination Project
Project Description:

In 2008, House Bill 669 required Florida school districts to adopt a policy prohibiting bullying and harassment. Despite the passing of this bill more than a decade ago, recent data shows Muslim students’ primary complaint is school officials failure to respond to bullying. CAIR-Florida focuses on cross-cultural communication, respect, and leadership to counter bullying in public/private schools. We ensure all students have a positive learning environment and feel secure in their identity by:
-Educating Muslim students and parents about their rights to not be bullied due to race, religion, or national origin.
-Providing actionable coping tools for students through Know Your Rights and bullying prevention workshops.
-Equipping students to report when they hear/see bullying by students, teachers, or administrators.
-Providing culturally relevant training for educators around Islam and issues faced by Muslim youth.
-Providing Islam 101 workshops for non-Muslim students and educators to proactively prevent bullying.
-Providing pro-bono legal services for cases requiring legal assistance. Our attorneys work with schools to ensure cases are a) investigated; b) perpetrators are reprimanded; and c) do not happen again by reviewing policies and providing cultural sensitivity training.
-Encouraging direct advocacy around adequate laws and procedures that deal with bullying.

South Florida’s Muslim community has grown from 70,000 Muslims ten years ago to 140,000+ today, making the prioritization of inclusion training such as the Islam 101s more relevant and impactful than ever before. During the 21-22 school year, we intend to work with Palm Beach County’s school district, the third largest district in Florida with 180 schools, 12,800 teachers, and 176,700+ students. We anticipate:
-Leading a district-wide Islam 101/Inclusion training in summer of 2021.
-Disseminating digital resources for regional and local educators.
-Leading 4-6 tailored school presentations for students.
-Leading 1-3 Know Your Rights as a Student and/or CAIR’s Anti-Bullying Guide within the community.

Project Title: Generation Genius Authors at Miami Book Fair
Project Description:

For 29 years, GGA has encouraged local students of all ages to read and write by connecting them with world-renowned authors of the day’s most popular books for children and youth. The mission of the program is to promote reading to thousands of students every year with the goal of cultivating literacy and learning in our community. GGA events offer students fun and exciting opportunities to engage with book culture, learn about different careers in the literary and creative industries, and develop vital literacy skills outside of a traditional learning environment.

GGA programming was wholly recreated for the virtual space and extended from its usual two days to the entire eight-day run of Book Fair in 2020. Our plans are to do the same in 2021, as requested by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, our partner in executing the program, and with the goal of reaching even more students. This year we will continue to also make special outreach efforts to youth organizations that serve underserved and special needs populations, to provide a greater youth audience the opportunity to take advantage of Miami Book Fair programming at no cost.

Highlights from the 2020 Generation Genius Authors programs include:

• Presented 28 authors across 19 GGA sessions to an estimated 10,206 South Florida elementary-, middle- and high-school students who participated in this year’s program.
• At least 68 schools participated in this year’s GGA program including 40 Miami schools (30 Title I schools) and 28 from Palm Beach County.
• We distributed 5,345 free books to children and youth participating in this year’s GGA program.

In 2020 Miami Book Fair also continued a decades long tradition of bringing the excitement of the country’s most prestigious award for young people’s literature to GGA participants by hosting our sixth annual Teen Press Conference.

Total Project Budget: 85,000

Other Funding

We will also be reaching out to a number of prospective funders this year.

Today’s Date: March 29, 2021
Requested Amount: $3,500

Project Title: Free and reduced cost art classes and summer art camps for children and youth
Project Description:

SOE offers cultural and educational opportunities to economically disadvantaged youth through free after-school art classes and summer art camps. SOE’s students are recruited from throughout the greater Birmingham area as well as Blount, Jefferson, St. Clair, and Walker Counties, with most coming from under-resourced neighborhoods and schools. Classes are taught by practicing artists in SOE’s artist studios and in Title I Birmingham City Schools.

SOE’s art programs for children and youth have proven to be a vital resource for cultural education in a region where many do not have access to art opportunities. In 2020, 90% of SOE students received free or reduced tuition based on family need.

Students in grades 2-8 learn elements of art and principles of design through individually conceived projects and collaborations. High school students strengthen foundation skills and learn about art-related careers. Juniors and seniors receive guidance for writing college applications and essays while building art portfolios to increase college opportunities.

During summer camps young artists select from a variety of media including motion graphics and digital photography, learning technological skills that are essential to a 21st century workforce. All summer camps are continuously filled and have waitlists; further testifying to the need for quality, innovative arts education programs for children and youth regardless of family income.

SOE fosters young imaginations by promoting environments where students feel safe expressing themselves creatively while developing socially, emotionally and intellectually. Leadership skills and entrepreneurial mindsets are developed through creative problem solving while confidence, perseverance, focus, dedication and accountability are also strengthened. The process of making, discussing and writing about their work enhances students’ communication skills. This type of advanced programming is often a benefit only available to their more economically advantaged peers.

Project Title: Grounded for Life
Project Description:

The Best Foot Forward Foundation (BFF) is the only nonprofit organization in Palm Beach County exclusively dedicated to the educational success of foster care children who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned. Established in 2010, its mission is to empower foster care youth to maximize their potential by providing essential academic support and guidance. There are 77 middle and high school foster youth in Grounded for Life, where BFF offers students with skills and opportunities to succeed in school, either in person or virtually. Foster care youth are shuffled to many different homes and school environments, which contributes to poor educational outcomes for students. All foster youth have suffered abuse, abandonment or neglect, and there is often little stability in their lives.

Grounded for Life’s Recipe for Success: BFF’s Grounded for Life program strives to serve as a constant in students’ lives, making year-round, one-on-one connections with each student by helping them to create a plan for graduation and their future. Based on the evidence-based, drop-out prevention model Check and Connect, the program creates long-term relationships with the students through Graduation Coaches who closely monitor school performance through academic assessments, a comprehensive education plan, and individualized goals for each student’s success. Due to COVID, BFF began seeing students virtually and adjusted its coaching to provide support to students through a completely remote process. In turn, BFF Coaches developed deeper relationships with students to help them maintain consistency in showing up to online classes and completing assignments.

Whether in-person or online, BFF Coaches will provide personalized tutoring, mentoring, test taking and study skills assistance. BFF also supports students’ mental health and wellness by helping youth deal with toxic stress, anxiety, conflict resolution, facilitating virtual activities such as yoga, meditation and breathing techniques and introducing students to online Apps such as Calm.

Project Title: Ending The Silence
Project Description:

NAMI ETS is a 50-minute program designed for student audiences. This interactive and transformational presentation is devoted to giving students an opportunity to learn about mental illness through an informative presentation, short videos, and personal testimonies.
A trained two-person team, one being an individual who shares their own journey with a diagnosable mental health condition, delivers the program. Students learn about symptoms and indicators of mental illness and are given resources aimed at helping themselves, their friends, or family members who may be in need of support.
At the conclusion of the presentation, students are given resource cards with valuable phone numbers and websites of mental health agencies and youth support services, along with a list of symptoms/warning signs of mental illness. Postcards are mailed home to parents informing them about the presentation.
Ending the Silence presentations are provided for three audiences:
1. NAMI Ending the Silence for Students: 50-minute presentation designed for students that includes warning signs, facts and statistics and how to get help for themselves or a friend. Research has shown that NAMI Ending the Silence for Students is effective in changing students’ knowledge and attitudes toward mental health conditions and toward seeking help.
