Project Title: Pet Therapy for Children and Youth
Project Description:

Pet therapy will be provided to children that will offer comfort and aid in healing. Canine Assisted Therapy will provide therapeutic interactions to children faced with adversity, isolation, illness, grief or trauma. Pet Therapy provides a means for staying engaged in everyday movement and behavior while at the same time lowering stress levels, promoting socialization with others, and providing mental stimulation.

The funding from the grant will ensure children receive pet therapy interactions and provide additional therapeutic services as the needs of our community evolve. Animals keep us in the present and reduce stress, as we’re not worrying or dwelling in the past. The best prescription for healthier living comes with four legs and fur.

The project will improve the quality of life for children through pet therapy interactions. Trained and certified pet therapy teams will visit children on a regular basis with special adaptions made to accommodate pandemic and social distancing guidelines.

Visits will be provided to pediatric patients, children with special needs, youth residing in foster facilities and shelters and others. Trained handlers bring therapy dogs to the facility for one-on-one or small group therapeutic interactions in a safe and controlled environment. Also provided will be Therapy Dog Hangout – visiting with a therapy dog at our facility, provides an outlet to safely engage and interact with a therapy animal; Canine Care-avans – Cars are decorated with words of encouragement and children are encouraged to pet the dogs through the car windows; Paw Pals – Volunteers write letters to pediatric patients from the therapy dog, with motivating messages and photos of their pups; Virtual Visits – Therapy dogs use video conferencing through our new TeleDog program.
