Project Title: Read OKC on the Go
Project Description:

ReadOKC has been given a unique opportunity to significantly expand our community impact and increase access in our OKC community, especially in high need book deserts. The Oklahoma City Public Schools district has designated two ADA compliant school buses for conversion to mobile book buses. ReadOKC on the Go!, through The Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools, is leading fundraising and management for retrofitting of the buses ($80,000 per bus), stocking the buses with books, scheduling the buses throughout the community and training volunteers for the buses. A key piece of our plan is to build home libraries for our families. Each child who visits the book buses will go home with their own book to keep. Our goal is to place 10,000 books in the community each year.

The primary purpose of the buses is to expand access to our community, students, and families and to encourage reading of all ages as a family practice by enabling them to visit the bus and take home books. Once the buses are rolling it is our goal to have the buses run a combined schedule of OKCPS schools and community partners. We have currently identified the following partners – Boys and Girls Club locations, YMCA, OKC Parks and Rec, the OKC Zoo, and OKASA (wheelchair basketball). We plan to coordinate schedules with these partners as well as with the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Caring Van, Mobile Food Markets.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 31, 2021
Requested Amount: $8,000

Project Title: Provide Trained CASA Volunteers for 280 Abused and Neglected Children
Project Description:

Piedmont CASA’s goal is to help restore safety, stability, and permanence to the lives of children who have been abused and neglected. The pandemic has made achieving our goal more complicated, demanding – and crucial. So much so that the Governor of Virginia declared our Volunteers essential workers during the pandemic.

We train men and women in our community to become Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASAs. It is through their independent investigation, advocacy, and thoroughly researched, well-written court reports that Piedmont CASA Volunteers have earned the confidence of local judges who determine the best interests of traumatized boys and girls.

After completing a 42-hour training course and a thorough screening, each Volunteer works with only one child or sibling group. This focus ensures that the child comes first, that his or her needs and desires remain at the forefront of case planning and judicial proceedings. CASA Volunteers interview parents, caretakers, foster parents, therapists, educators, and other professionals. They meet with their child at least once a month. They collaborate extensively with social workers and treatment providers to ensure that all parties stay informed about progress and issues in each case, and that the children receive the services they need. Their investigations culminate with fact-based reports to the judge that include recommendations on how best to meet the needs of each child. In FY20, our court reports contained 586 recommendations. The court accepted 557, or 95%.

Our Volunteers provide the kind of intervention maltreated children need to thrive: trauma-informed care in every setting, more medical care and educational support, less time in foster care, and, at the conclusion of each case, safe and permanent homes that support their well-being and development. These are key to breaking the cycle of abuse and neglect and enabling youngsters to become stable, productive adults.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 31 March 2021
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Feeding Futures School Pantry Program
Project Description:

We began 2020 serving 706,430 individuals in South Florida and now because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are entering 2021 with a client population of more than 1.2 million, including approximately 25 percent of all children. Food insecurity rates this high, particularly among children for whom food insecurity jumped from 18.9 percent to approximately 25 percent, signal a secondary public health crisis. Food insecurity is linked to higher rates of chronic diseases, communicable illnesses, health risk behaviors, and premature mortality. Children that grow up in food insecure households are more likely to experience lower health-related quality of life and cognitive and behavioral problems that affect well-being and school performance. The purpose of the FSF Feeding Futures School Pantry Program (FSFSPP) is to help alleviate child hunger through the provision of food to children and their families. School Pantries provide a variety of readily accessible food to low-income students and their families, in a safe environment with which they’re already familiar. The FSFSPP has a focus on providing not only pantry staples (rice, canned goods, etc.) but also fresh fruits and vegetables. The FSFSPP is one of the most efficient and effective ways to serve children in our community.

Total Project Budget: $50,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): As a result of the Coronavirus pandemic and school closures, Feeding South Florida suspended the School Pantry Program in March 2020. We are thrilled to be resuming the program for the 2021-2022 school year and this proposal represents one of the first funding requests we’ve made toward that target.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/30/21
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Dental Center
Project Description:

The COVID pandemic hit our organization hard. Our main source of income, the Assistance League of Redlands Thrift shop was shut down for several months twice. After the county provided opening guidance, we implemented recommendations and cautiously reopened 3 shortened days a week which is only half of normal operating hours. Income is also expected to be about $150,000 less this year.

One of the most critical programs is our Dental Center. We provide low cost, full-service dentistry, preventative and palliative care for the uninsured, underserved, homeless and low-income children, adults and seniors without regard to race, religion, age or LGBT status. We also provide services to the homeless and other very low-income people at our Free Clinic. We are particularly proud of our Kindergarten program where we do a dental evaluation each Spring and look forward to restarting as soon as the schools reopen full-time.

The Dental Center has spent a great deal of our funds to re-open the Dental Center after a 3-month closure. We predict that the Dental Center will fall short about $30,000 this year. Since our main funding source, the Thrift Shop, is also running at half speed, we are concerned about the longevity of the Dental Center program. If you partner with us, you will join with us in providing dental care to the needy thus making their overall health and lives better.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/30/2021
Requested Amount: 5,000

Project Title: A Bed of My Own
Project Description:

This request is for support of Sweet Dream Makers’ A Bed of My Own program, which provides children and parents in need with safe, clean beds at no cost to the family.

SDM fulfills the immediate need for families lacking the basic necessities of home, as determined through a careful vetting of referrals in consultation with area case managers at 50+ partner social service agencies. These community partners identify families in need – the majority of whom have at least one working caregiver – and SDM responds case by case with beds, furniture, and houseware solutions tailored to each family’s needs. Leveraging relationships with area furniture companies and low-cost suppliers, SDM sources the best fit for each family’s needs. We ensure that each recipient is provided with: new mattress, mattress encasement to protect against bed bugs and bed-wetting, box spring, bed frame, bedding including sheets, comforter, and pillows chosen by the children.

For children and teens, inadequate sleep leads to health and education issues with potentially devastating long-term consequences. Students who are not well-rested struggle academically, emotionally, and socially. Lack of childhood sleep greatly increases the risk for obesity, diabetes, and mental health challenges. These hurdles drastically limit the potential for well-being and success for the most vulnerable members of our community – but these risks can be significantly reduced by providing children and families with safe, clean, and appropriate beds.

Today, SDM provides 175-300 beds per month to children and families in need. We are the only local nonprofit focused specifically on beds, bedding, and essential furniture as a critical component of safety, security, and personal dignity for families and children in need. To date we have proudly provided 7,500+ beds to 3,500+ families and provide more than 300 families with other essential furniture ever year.

Total Project Budget: $854,290

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): ): Funding for A Bed of My Own is entirely made up of individual donations, grants and foundation support, and event proceeds. In 2021 we are on track to raise approximately $513,950 in grants, $463,000 from events, $62,000 from individual contributions.

Project Duration: A Bed of My Own is an ongoing program. The requested funds will support the 2021 program.
Geographical Area Served: A Bed of My Own serves children and families in need throughout Palm Beach and Broward Counties
Age Group To Be Served: Primarily we serve children age 0-18, but we also provide beds to their adult family caretakers.

Project Title: Multi-Sensory Program
Project Description:

As a valuable educational resource for our community’s most vulnerable families, inclusion and accessibility have always been central to our mission at Miami Children’s Museum. Families with children with developmental disabilities and in need of programming adapted to diverse learning styles have been able to rely on us to provide inclusive educational enrichment opportunities. Currently, the Museum offers Sensory Friendly Saturdays, a monthly program when the Museum opens early to provide two dedicated hours of activities with a modified and supportive environment. This program was created for children with global developmental delays, sensory processing disabilities, or on the autism spectrum. Adjustments to the Museum’s exhibit during the program include limiting crowds, dimming the lights, and lowering the sounds throughout the galleries. The Museum education team provides adaptive art activities that explore various cultures and art and includes a live theater performance. The Museum seeks support to expand its current multi-sensory program and has developed an 18-month plan to meet the demands of the South Florida disability community. Funding from The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation would support (1) enhancement of the monthly Sensory Friendly Saturday program with contracted certified therapeutic professionals such as Applied Behavior Analysts, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Art Therapist, and Music Therapist; (2) break the financial barriers by providing free admission for Sensory Friendly Saturday programs; (3) host an Autism Awareness Month community program in April 2022, including resources designed to increase the understanding of people on the autism spectrum and featuring professional artists that represent the autism community; and (4) purchase new therapeutic tools to further develop our guest’s experience, and are aligned with the Museum’s new standards of wellness due to COVID-19. Marketing efforts to promote the new programming will include personal outreaches to the Museum’s partners such as The Victory Center and others.
