Project Title: Read OKC on the Go
Project Description:

ReadOKC has been given a unique opportunity to significantly expand our community impact and increase access in our OKC community, especially in high need book deserts. The Oklahoma City Public Schools district has designated two ADA compliant school buses for conversion to mobile book buses. ReadOKC on the Go!, through The Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools, is leading fundraising and management for retrofitting of the buses ($80,000 per bus), stocking the buses with books, scheduling the buses throughout the community and training volunteers for the buses. A key piece of our plan is to build home libraries for our families. Each child who visits the book buses will go home with their own book to keep. Our goal is to place 10,000 books in the community each year.

The primary purpose of the buses is to expand access to our community, students, and families and to encourage reading of all ages as a family practice by enabling them to visit the bus and take home books. Once the buses are rolling it is our goal to have the buses run a combined schedule of OKCPS schools and community partners. We have currently identified the following partners – Boys and Girls Club locations, YMCA, OKC Parks and Rec, the OKC Zoo, and OKASA (wheelchair basketball). We plan to coordinate schedules with these partners as well as with the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Caring Van, Mobile Food Markets.
