Project Title: Feeding Futures School Pantry Program
Project Description:

We began 2020 serving 706,430 individuals in South Florida and now because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are entering 2021 with a client population of more than 1.2 million, including approximately 25 percent of all children. Food insecurity rates this high, particularly among children for whom food insecurity jumped from 18.9 percent to approximately 25 percent, signal a secondary public health crisis. Food insecurity is linked to higher rates of chronic diseases, communicable illnesses, health risk behaviors, and premature mortality. Children that grow up in food insecure households are more likely to experience lower health-related quality of life and cognitive and behavioral problems that affect well-being and school performance. The purpose of the FSF Feeding Futures School Pantry Program (FSFSPP) is to help alleviate child hunger through the provision of food to children and their families. School Pantries provide a variety of readily accessible food to low-income students and their families, in a safe environment with which they’re already familiar. The FSFSPP has a focus on providing not only pantry staples (rice, canned goods, etc.) but also fresh fruits and vegetables. The FSFSPP is one of the most efficient and effective ways to serve children in our community.

Total Project Budget: $50,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): As a result of the Coronavirus pandemic and school closures, Feeding South Florida suspended the School Pantry Program in March 2020. We are thrilled to be resuming the program for the 2021-2022 school year and this proposal represents one of the first funding requests we’ve made toward that target.

Project Duration: 10 Months
Geographical Area Served: Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties
Age Group To Be Served: Children ages 5-12
