Project Title: Generation Genius Authors at Miami Book Fair
Project Description:

For 29 years, GGA has encouraged local students of all ages to read and write by connecting them with world-renowned authors of the day’s most popular books for children and youth. The mission of the program is to promote reading to thousands of students every year with the goal of cultivating literacy and learning in our community. GGA events offer students fun and exciting opportunities to engage with book culture, learn about different careers in the literary and creative industries, and develop vital literacy skills outside of a traditional learning environment.

GGA programming was wholly recreated for the virtual space and extended from its usual two days to the entire eight-day run of Book Fair in 2020. Our plans are to do the same in 2021, as requested by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, our partner in executing the program, and with the goal of reaching even more students. This year we will continue to also make special outreach efforts to youth organizations that serve underserved and special needs populations, to provide a greater youth audience the opportunity to take advantage of Miami Book Fair programming at no cost.

Highlights from the 2020 Generation Genius Authors programs include:

• Presented 28 authors across 19 GGA sessions to an estimated 10,206 South Florida elementary-, middle- and high-school students who participated in this year’s program.
• At least 68 schools participated in this year’s GGA program including 40 Miami schools (30 Title I schools) and 28 from Palm Beach County.
• We distributed 5,345 free books to children and youth participating in this year’s GGA program.

In 2020 Miami Book Fair also continued a decades long tradition of bringing the excitement of the country’s most prestigious award for young people’s literature to GGA participants by hosting our sixth annual Teen Press Conference.
