Project Title: School Anti-Discrimination Project
Project Description:
In 2008, House Bill 669 required Florida school districts to adopt a policy prohibiting bullying and harassment. Despite the passing of this bill more than a decade ago, recent data shows Muslim students’ primary complaint is school officials failure to respond to bullying. CAIR-Florida focuses on cross-cultural communication, respect, and leadership to counter bullying in public/private schools. We ensure all students have a positive learning environment and feel secure in their identity by:
-Educating Muslim students and parents about their rights to not be bullied due to race, religion, or national origin.
-Providing actionable coping tools for students through Know Your Rights and bullying prevention workshops.
-Equipping students to report when they hear/see bullying by students, teachers, or administrators.
-Providing culturally relevant training for educators around Islam and issues faced by Muslim youth.
-Providing Islam 101 workshops for non-Muslim students and educators to proactively prevent bullying.
-Providing pro-bono legal services for cases requiring legal assistance. Our attorneys work with schools to ensure cases are a) investigated; b) perpetrators are reprimanded; and c) do not happen again by reviewing policies and providing cultural sensitivity training.
-Encouraging direct advocacy around adequate laws and procedures that deal with bullying.
South Florida’s Muslim community has grown from 70,000 Muslims ten years ago to 140,000+ today, making the prioritization of inclusion training such as the Islam 101s more relevant and impactful than ever before. During the 21-22 school year, we intend to work with Palm Beach County’s school district, the third largest district in Florida with 180 schools, 12,800 teachers, and 176,700+ students. We anticipate:
-Leading a district-wide Islam 101/Inclusion training in summer of 2021.
-Disseminating digital resources for regional and local educators.
-Leading 4-6 tailored school presentations for students.
-Leading 1-3 Know Your Rights as a Student and/or CAIR’s Anti-Bullying Guide within the community.
