Project Title: Special Need Scholarship
Project Description:

Unicorn Village Academy, UVA, is a Complete Educational Experience, serving middle and high school students with neurodiversities. UVA is designed with the necessary built-in supports for students unable to succeed in a ‘typical’ school setting. Programs offered include: Upper Middle & High school, providing individualized academic support preparing students for either 24-credit ACCESS Option or Standard Diploma; and a Pre-employment & Transition Program, preparing students for employment by providing opportunities for career exploration and interests in the local community, and college experiences. The focus of UVA programs is to prepare students for adult life with a multi-dimensional curriculum providing training in Life skills, Pre-employment skills & Academics. The curriculums encourage independence, self-advocacy, and preparation for life.

Unfortunately, many families cannot afford tuition and, left without options, will keep their child in public school. Sadly, this often results in a regression of skills and abilities, further limiting opportunities to succeed. Every day that passes is a day lost for these children.

Recent funds received from the Hermanowski Family Foundation have enabled UVA to enroll a student who had lost two years in the public school system. Within one month there were significant changes in his abilities both socially and academically. This student is now successfully completing credits towards his high school diploma and is also participating in several community pre-employment programs.

UVA is a program for those in need. It should be available to all regardless of financial status. It is our hope that this Special Need Scholarship will continue to provide many opportunities for students.

Upon completion of the project, UVA will provide a statement indicating how the funds were spent in alignment with grant request.

Project Title: Children’s Cancer Navigation
Project Description:

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, their days quickly fill with treatments & doctor visits. Their parents are forced to analyze overwhelming amounts of information to achieve the best outcome for their child, remission. This always involves a myriad of medical specialties & procedures. Low-income & non-English speaking families face greater obstacles achieving positive outcomes due to language barriers when receiving & providing pertinent medical information to doctors & hospitals on behalf of their child.

Cancer care and survival rates have vastly improved over the years. However, it has come at a high price. Even families fortunate enough to have comprehensive health insurance struggle with extremely high deductibles, prescriptions costs, & innumerable out-of-pocket & un-covered expenses. When you also consider that one parent usually must quit their full-time job to care for their sick child, as this is often what is necessary, it is not surprising that families often find themselves in severe financial crisis & on the verge of homelessness. A 2013 study by the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found that families with a child stricken with cancer were 2.5 times more likely to declare bankruptcy, as average treatment costs can easily reach $100,000 or more EACH YEAR.

Astoundingly, the 3rd largest percentage of children diagnosed with cancer in the state of Florida resides in Palm Beach County. Consequently, 70% of our clients are children stricken with cancer. Cancer Alliance of Help & Hope (CAHH) strongly advocates for each child client throughout treatment & beyond. We work collaboratively with the child’s family, medical team & through outreach to local, state, & national resources to ensure that each child’s needs are met. Our method of coordinating education & support is critical & has been shown to increase the child’s quality of life AND overall chance of recovery & survival.

Project Title: Best Buddies Palm Beach Friendship and Leadership Program
Project Description:

The Best Buddies Palm Beach Friendship Program builds one-to-one friendships between students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), offering social mentoring while improving the quality of life and level of inclusion for a population that is often isolated and excluded. Through their participation, people with IDD form meaningful connections with their peers, gain self-confidence and self-esteem, and share interests, experiences and activities that everyone should enjoy.

BBI staff recruit, train, and guide faculty and student leaders in running successful chapters. At each middle and high school, a faculty advisor and a special education advisor work with student leaders to recruit students with IDD (buddies) to be matched in one-to-one friendships with students without disabilities (peer buddies). Best Buddies requires that new friends contact each other once per week and that they spend time together at least twice per month.

One major key to the success of our project design is the one year commitment required of all buddy pairs. This continuity allows for meaningful friendships to develop while providing a mutually supportive community for participants.

Goals for this project include:
1) Increase opportunities for socialization and inclusion of people with IDD
2) Help individuals with IDD develop life skills critical to furthering education and employment
3) Provide opportunities for leadership development in middle school, high school, and college students, so that they will continue to improve their communities
4) Increase awareness of the abilities of people with IDD in students and community members

With the support of the The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Foundation, our programs will continue to create a ripple effect of change by empowering communities to embrace individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to create a more inclusive world.

Project Title: Victory Summer Program
Project Description:

The Miami-Dade community currently lacks adequate summer day camp opportunities for students affected by autism and other related developmental disabilities. Additionally, very few summer programs serve high school age students with behavioral challenges associated with autism. As the prevalence of autism continues to grow, The Victory Center offers a specialized full-day summer program for students on the autism spectrum, ages 2-22. The 9-week program gives families access to high quality and comprehensive behavioral therapy combined with individualized academic instruction, facilitated social interaction, and weekly enrichment field trips. Currently, Miami-Dade schools only offer half day programming geared towards secondary special-needs students. This type of programming traditionally only happens in the month of July and it is subject to available federal funding. The Victory Center has a proven track record for offering age-appropriate programming for both primary and secondary special-needs students. The Victory Center Summer programming is instructed by highly trained professionals and supervised by two onsite doctoral level Board-Certified Behavior Analysts.

Requested Amount: 5,000

Project Title: Sole Necessities
Project Description:

In Jacob’s Shoes provides essential basic necessities to at-risk children/youth including shoes, backpacks, school supplies and athletic gear. Our goal is that no child goes without the fundamental tools needed for academic achievement and life-long success.

Over the past year we have substantially increased support to our partners in Southern Palm Beach County including Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Lake Worth through the establishment/expansion of 11 shoe closets at area schools/agencies. In 2018 we provided 7,322 pairs of shoes and 333 backpacks filled with school supplies to at-risk children in Boca Raton and surrounding PBC.

The community need met is extreme poverty forcing thousands of at-risk children/youth to attend school ill-prepared and at a distinct disadvantage among their peers. These children/youth attend school in worn, ill-fitting shoes that are harmful to their developing feet and cause significant embarrassment/ emotional distress. Likewise, necessary school supplies essential for academic success are also beyond their reach as is athletic equipment for participation in sports and activities that promote physical health/greater achievement. Childhood is the foundation where our futures are laid; a foundation incomplete with the fundamental needs for success leaves at-risk children at a distinct disadvantage for achievement.

We collaborate with 125 local shelters, schools, charities and social service organizations to address and meet the need described in this proposal. We partner with the Spirit of Giving Network of Charities and distribute shoes each year at their back to-school event known as “The Spirit of Giving Back-To-School Bash”. We also provide for homeless students on a year-round basis by working directly with the Palm Beach County School District McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Program (formerly known as HEART). Over the past year we have significantly increased support to our partners in Boca Raton, Lake Worth, Boynton, and Delray through the establishment or expansion of shoe closets at area schools.

Project Title: Child & Adolescent Trauma Counseling
Project Description:

Our Child & Adolescent Trauma Counseling Program operates in Palm Beach County, Florida and primarily serves children and adolescents 3-18 who have been impacted by trauma and/or abuse and are uninsured, underinsured and in need. Traumatic events include; bullying, car accidents resulting in major injury or death, mass shootings and fear of mass shootings, unexpected death of a parent or sibling, etc. Forms of abuse include; physical, sexual, mental, and emotional as well as abandonment and neglect.

For these children, Center for Trauma Counseling provides targeted mental health counseling including tools and resources for managing and eliminating the negative effects these incident(s) have on each child’s current well-being and future positive outcomes. Our treatment plans utilize a variety of modalities with a major emphasis on Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Peer and Group Counseling.

Each client’s course of treatment typically spans 6-8 weeks, based on one to two sessions per week, and is predicated on severity of presenting symptoms. However, it is clinically appropriate for clients to receive longer-term therapy in some cases. Thus, the extent of services naturally varies based on individual client needs.

Our objectives includes:

• Provide mental health intervention services within a 48-hour period from time of referral.
• Provide critical intervention with immediate service to self-referral and walk-in clients.
• Increase the availability of immediate, short and long-term services using a minimum of two regularly scheduled peer and group counseling sessions per week
• Increase the availability of mental health intervention services for youth and families through consistent outreach and coordination with community based programs
