Project Title: Sole Necessities
Project Description:
In Jacob’s Shoes provides essential basic necessities to at-risk children/youth including shoes, backpacks, school supplies and athletic gear. Our goal is that no child goes without the fundamental tools needed for academic achievement and life-long success.
Over the past year we have substantially increased support to our partners in Southern Palm Beach County including Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Lake Worth through the establishment/expansion of 11 shoe closets at area schools/agencies. In 2018 we provided 7,322 pairs of shoes and 333 backpacks filled with school supplies to at-risk children in Boca Raton and surrounding PBC.
The community need met is extreme poverty forcing thousands of at-risk children/youth to attend school ill-prepared and at a distinct disadvantage among their peers. These children/youth attend school in worn, ill-fitting shoes that are harmful to their developing feet and cause significant embarrassment/ emotional distress. Likewise, necessary school supplies essential for academic success are also beyond their reach as is athletic equipment for participation in sports and activities that promote physical health/greater achievement. Childhood is the foundation where our futures are laid; a foundation incomplete with the fundamental needs for success leaves at-risk children at a distinct disadvantage for achievement.
We collaborate with 125 local shelters, schools, charities and social service organizations to address and meet the need described in this proposal. We partner with the Spirit of Giving Network of Charities and distribute shoes each year at their back to-school event known as “The Spirit of Giving Back-To-School Bash”. We also provide for homeless students on a year-round basis by working directly with the Palm Beach County School District McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Program (formerly known as HEART). Over the past year we have significantly increased support to our partners in Boca Raton, Lake Worth, Boynton, and Delray through the establishment or expansion of shoe closets at area schools.
