Project Description:

The mission of Westover School is to provide an environment that inspires the intellectual, artist, athlete, and philosopher in each student. Westover challenges young women to think independently, to embrace diversity, and to grow intellectually and spiritually. Westover encourages in each student integrity, responsibility, and commitment to community. Westover School is an independent all-girls’ college preparatory school located in Middlebury, Connecticut, currently providing educational opportunities to 205 young women, including both boarding and day students.

Westover School’s Inspiring Women Campaign, the largest fundraising initiative in the history of our school, is now underway. This comprehensive $45 million fundraising initiative insures the continued endowment for student support, faculty salaries, signature programs, campus stewardship, and growth of the annual fund. By securing our signature programs such as W.I.S.E., Manhattan School of Music, Online School for Girls, and others, Westover will lead the way in creating innovative learning opportunities and experiences for the young women we educate. Our newest signature program is our Women in Finance, Business and Entrepreneurship.

During their time at Westover, up to 20 members of the Class of 2014 will participate in our four financial education workshops a year, as well as field trips. In addition, students will be matched one-on-one with mentors who will provide financial guidance and support through monthly contacts. Students will also learn about a variety of career paths in the financial and business world by going on-site to different companies and meeting successful business leaders in a wide range of careers. Each year we will enroll up to 20 sophomore students to participate in this program.

Project Title: Village Readers Career Awareness
Project Description:

In 2000, the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County established the Village Readers Family Education Program in Delray Beach. The program operates year round, Monday through Thursday, and serves children who attend Village Academy (a public school), their parents and other adults living in the neighborhood who seek to improve their literacy skills. From 5:45 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the adults are given instruction that focuses on basic life skills within the core curriculum of English, reading and writing. The adults have very limited literacy and English language skills and come to class after working in low-wage jobs such as housekeeping and lawn maintenance. While their parents are in class, the children participate in reading enrichment activities that support learning while not being as formal as the instruction they receive during the day in their regular classroom. There are approximately 100 adults and 40 children in the Village Readers program.
For both the adults and children, career awareness will be given special attention in the academic year that starts in August 2011. The adults will be encouraged to review potential careers and outline the steps that need to be taken to achieve the goal of obtaining a job that pays a family sustaining wage. Our request is for materials that will be used with the children to introduce them to career clusters and help them explore qualifications needed to obtain jobs in these fields. A different career cluster, such as jobs in the healthcare field, will be introduced each month and the children will participate in activities related to those careers. Materials could include books, software, posters and games. The career awareness project will help these children from low-income families envision a future that is brighter by broadening their view of what is possible.

Total Project Budget: $166,444 – FY 13 budget for Village Readers program

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): There are no funding sources for the career awareness project. Each year, the Literacy Coalition works to secure funding for the costs of the basic literacy instruction. Project Title: Equine therapy for special needs children
Project Description:

These dollars would be used for scholarships for underprivileged special needs children ranging in age from 4 to 18. The need remains great among the special needs community and providing financial help to families is one of the best things that can be done for them. Without help from the Hermanowski Foundation, many of our special needs students would be left out of our program. Our 110 special needs students range in age from 4 to 75, with 69% of them being under the age of 18.

At the present time 61% of our students are unable to pay for any portion of the program and are on full scholarships. We anticipate a growth of 10% in requests for scholarships next fall. The cost-per-student to attend classes at Horses and the Handicapped is from $2,500 to $4,000 for the fall, winter and spring session. The maximum any of our students are asked to pay is $1,650 a year. No student is refused access to our program because they are unable to pay.

We have 4 staff members, 2 physical therapists, 4 other PATH certified instructors and 325 volunteers who provide 27,900 hours per year helping our special needs students.

Other areas where we need financial assistance are as follows:
*Increase Interactive Vaulting Classes from 1 class with 5 special needs students to 3 classes for 15 special needs students.
*Pilot an equine facilitated mental health program.
*Repair and replace equipment for the horses: saddles, bridles, saddle pads, grooming kits, vaulting equipment, etc.
*Summer camp program for special needs children and their siblings.
*On-going training and education for our staff.

Project Title: K.I.N.D. — Kids Impacted by National Depression
Project Description:

The K.I.N.D. program provides a funding pool to take care of the special needs of low-income children significantly impacted by our Nation\’s current economic depression. The funding will be used to help kids get dental, medical or eye care; back to school needs; Rx filling; holiday and birthday gifts; gift cards; counseling and intervention; prevention of abuse and neglect via financial help to pay rent, turn on utilities, etc.; transportation assistance; tutoring; school arts/music program financial help and more. So many of the problems our young children face can be significantly reduced with financial help- housing protected, bills paid to relieve stress or utility disconnect, nutritious food to assure that kids eat even when school is out, school outings and events that require fees, help with clothing, shoes, medications, eyeglasses, etc. Good parents are not able to meet the needs of their children in these economically distressed times. The extended economic depression has left our families in shambles, stressed to levels never seen before. In Florida we have higher rates of unemployment, foreclosure, bankruptcy, and hunger than the National average. We are here to help parents succeed by offering them direct assistance and also by linking them with our more than 100 collaborative agencies. The financial support we are seeking will help our struggling parents with caring for their kids, thus improving the existence and quality of life of the poor children who are seen at our one-stop center. This financial support gives us the opportunity to help kids with school related fees or supply needs, shoes, socks, underwear and uniforms. We never know what we might be called upon to assist with-from cataract surgery for a six year old, to arranging for a funeral for an infant who has diet. Poor families don\’t know what to do when faced with such tragedy. Hopefully, someone points them in our direction.

Organization Tax Status: 501 c 3

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 15, 2012
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Healing the Hurt of Child Sexual Abuse
Project Description:

Kristi House was organized in 1994 as a Task Force to fill the unmet critical need in Miami-Dade County for specialized and coordinated services for child victims of sexual abuse. As a result, Kristi House was founded and began providing case coordination services in 1996. By the end of the first year, six times the number of cases expected came in. Kristi House leaders took steps to built its CAC to provide a special environment for the collocation of agencies involved in handling the emotional, physical, and legal needs of sexually abused children. Kristi House opened the Orlowitz-Lee CAC at its main location in 1999. Three satellite offices in southern and northern ends of Miami-Dade County were opened in 2006 and 2007 to serve more therapy clients, and a Drop-in Center was opened in Spring 2009 for commercially sexually exploited children. Annually 800 cases are handled by Kristi House.
Therapy is a critical component in helping children overcome the trauma of child sexual abuse. Kristi House is the only agency in Miami-Dade County providing specialized mental health services regardless of families’ ability to pay. Because untreated child sexual abuse often manifests itself in health, sexual and social problems throughout life–and at a considerable cost to the greater community–it is vitally important that Kristi House provides sexually abused children with mental health services. Unfortunately, very limited public funding exists to help these young, vulnerable victims of crime. Kristi House is dedicated, nevertheless, to ensuring that all children receive the help they need by its highly trained and qualified therapists who use best practice, proven interventions to provide mental health services to child-victims and their families. We are dedicated to helping children break free of the silence, secrecy, and shame that should never define a child’s life.

Total Project Budget: 905,802

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Public sources committed to therapy support currently include Florida Dept. of Children & Families ($62,500), Our Kids of Miami-Dade/Monroe ($77,000), U.S. Dept. of Justice ($50,000), City of Miami Gardens ($12,000). Medicaid reimbursement for those clients who qualify is historically based at $125,000 annually. Private sources committed and their annual amounts include The Miami Foundation ($33,000), Peacock Foundation ($80,000), Paul Palank Memorial Foundation ($47,000), Pearl Foundation ($15,000), National Children\’s Alliance ($50,000). Applications are pending before The Miami Foundation Denise Moon Fund and the Kennedy Family Foundation. Kristi House’s annual Touch a Heart Dinner nets between $300,000 and $350,000, of which a considerable portion is dedicated to therapy.

Project Title: Coach and Teacher Took-Kit:
Project Description:

Khan Academy is a 501(c)3 educational not-for-profit organization with a mission to “provide a free world-class education to anyone anywhere.”

We believe that students of all ages should have free, unlimited access to top-notch educational content on any topic and that students (of all ages) should be able to consume and master this content at their own pace. Khan Academy is comprised of five main elements (Content, Exercises, Data & Analytics, Teacher Took-Kit and Discovery Lab Summer Camps) that are freely available to all users through our website.

We believe that new educational institutions and models emerge at major inflection points in history and that the information revolution is one of those inflection points. With the technology that exists today, we are working to fundamentally transform education.

Sal Khan, the Founder and CEO talks about how he got started in his 2011 TED talk “Salman Khan: Let\’s use video to reinvent education“ (goo.gl/EIy4R) which has now been viewed over 5M times. A recent segment that aired on 60 Minutes also provides a great insight into our work. (http://goo.gl/XtBaF)

We would like to leverage a grant from the The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to continue our work developing our “Teacher Took-Kit”. Based on the work that we have been doing with several schools to implement Khan Academy in the classroom, we are creating this online “toolkit” to empower teachers, parents and mentors (who we call “coaches”) with the tools they need to leverage our content and platform in their homes and schools.

Thank you for considering our request.
