Project Title: Village Readers Career Awareness
Project Description:
In 2000, the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County established the Village Readers Family Education Program in Delray Beach. The program operates year round, Monday through Thursday, and serves children who attend Village Academy (a public school), their parents and other adults living in the neighborhood who seek to improve their literacy skills. From 5:45 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the adults are given instruction that focuses on basic life skills within the core curriculum of English, reading and writing. The adults have very limited literacy and English language skills and come to class after working in low-wage jobs such as housekeeping and lawn maintenance. While their parents are in class, the children participate in reading enrichment activities that support learning while not being as formal as the instruction they receive during the day in their regular classroom. There are approximately 100 adults and 40 children in the Village Readers program.
For both the adults and children, career awareness will be given special attention in the academic year that starts in August 2011. The adults will be encouraged to review potential careers and outline the steps that need to be taken to achieve the goal of obtaining a job that pays a family sustaining wage. Our request is for materials that will be used with the children to introduce them to career clusters and help them explore qualifications needed to obtain jobs in these fields. A different career cluster, such as jobs in the healthcare field, will be introduced each month and the children will participate in activities related to those careers. Materials could include books, software, posters and games. The career awareness project will help these children from low-income families envision a future that is brighter by broadening their view of what is possible.
Total Project Budget: $166,444 – FY 13 budget for Village Readers program
