Project Title: \"The Hermanowski Sea Turtles Project\"
Project Description:

The goal of this Eco-Action on Sea Turtles is to increase awareness in the middle school age students of the status of sea turtles so they can become stewards/advocates for a healthy sustainable ecology. This grant will fund these components:
1- Project Sea Turtle Curriculum and Syllabus development to meet FL teaching standards- Project life is 5 years.
2- Training of Eco-Action presenters
3- Scholarships for up to 100 middle school students for the half-day trip to study turtles

Curriculum will direct Students to:
Learn the 7 species of sea turtles
Identify the food sources of each
demonstrate knowledge of the life cycle of the sea turtle
Understand the need to protect nesting sites

SEA TURTLES Eco-Action Lesson Plan
Students will be introduced to the topic of sea turtles and administered a pre-test for a base line of information.
The lesson presented includes elementary facts of sea turtles, species, habitats, life cycle, dangers to sea turtles, and how to protect nesting sites.

Students will visit a nesting site in the supervision of a KEC Eco-Action presenter and a nature specialist (park ranger or sea turtle steward at the beach park) to see first hand the environment the female sea turtles and the young have to face for survival. These challenges include: people on the beach and nest vulnerability, garbage on the beach that pose problems to survival, natural predators to eggs as well as hatchlings.

Students will participate in a ‘create’ activity of turtle art where natural items gathered from nature will be used to collage turtle forms which will then be used by to tell the story of the sea turtle and its life.

A post test is then administered to measure knowledge growth from this eco-action activity.
