Project Title: Pathways to Stability: Funding Unhoused Youth Programs in Washington County
Project Description:

Founded in 2005, HomePlate Youth Services is the only organization in Washington County dedicated solely to serving youth ages 12-24 experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Guided by our mission to uplift and empower young people through community building, education, and access to resources, HomePlate provides comprehensive, youth-centered services designed to meet immediate needs while supporting long-term stability and growth. At the core of our work is the Circle of Courage framework, rooted in research and Native philosophies of care, which emphasizes belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity. This approach shapes every aspect of our programming and reflects our philosophy of “meeting youth where they are.” We recognize that before a young person can focus on employment, education, or housing goals, they must first feel safe, valued, and connected. HomePlate’s Drop-In program serves as a trusted “home base” for youth navigating housing instability. Young people access essential resources including hot meals, showers, laundry facilities, clothing, hygiene supplies, healthcare connections, outreach support, and referrals to housing and community services. These basic needs are critical to helping youth stabilize physically and emotionally while reducing barriers to long-term success. Beyond immediate support, our drop-in centers create opportunities for healing, joy, and connection. Staff intentionally design programming that allows young people to experience community, creativity, and belonging despite the trauma and isolation often associated with homelessness. For many youth, HomePlate is one of the few consistent and affirming spaces in their lives. The need for youth homelessness services in Washington County continues to grow rapidly, far outpacing available resources. Through compassionate, relationship-centered care, HomePlate helps young people build resilience, strengthen self-determination, and create pathways toward stable housing and a brighter future where homelessness is temporary, not chronic.

Project Description:

Handy (Helping Advance and Nurture the Development of Youth, Inc.) is a children’s services organization dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged and underserved youth throughout Broward County, Florida. Handy focuses its work in high-need ZIP codes—including 33311, 33313, 33309, and 33319—where families face persistent challenges such as housing instability, food insecurity, limited access to healthcare, and elevated juvenile crime rates. Through comprehensive afterschool academic programming and wraparound supports, Handy addresses critical gaps in education, mental health services, family stabilization, food security, and access to essential resources.

Handy’s cornerstone youth enrichment model—the LIFE Program. LIFE—short for Life Skills, Independent Living, Foundation Building, and Education/Employment—is designed to empower Broward County’s most vulnerable young people by equipping them with the training, skills, mental stability, basic resources, mentorship, and confidence needed to thrive in every area of life.

LIFE Program successfully integrates 67 individual youth development initiatives across five core pillars:
• Youth Development – Life skills training, mentorship, and enrichment activities
• Workforce Development – Career readiness, job placement, and financial literacy
• Mental Health – Trauma-informed counseling and emotional resilience programs
• Housing – Transitional support and emergency housing assistance
• Education Transition Services – Academic support, scholarships, and college readiness

Together, these foundational areas form a comprehensive, holistic wraparound program designed to help Handy youth overcome systemic barriers to academic achievement, career readiness, and personal well-being. Our evidence-based model operates as a fully integrated system, delivered through individualized case management led by experienced leadership, certified counselors, and youth coaches. This inclusive, coordinated approach equips young people with the long-term skills, stability, and confidence needed to achieve independence and sustained success.

Project Title: Zeta Youth Empowerment & Leadership Development
Project Description:

Royal Doves, Inc., in partnership with the Zeta Youth Auxiliary, respectfully submits this request to The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation in support of our Youth Empowerment and Leadership Development Program. This initiative directly aligns with the Foundation’s commitment to improving and transforming the lives of children and young adults up to age 21 by equipping them with the tools necessary to achieve their full potential.
Founded over six years ago in Pembroke Pines, Miramar, and surrounding South Florida communities, Royal Doves, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a proven history of girl-centered programming. We serve 20 young ladies ages 4 to 18, providing mentorship, life skills workshops, civic engagement, and leadership training to build confidence and character through young adulthood. Over 90% of our graduates enroll in college or trade school, supported by two to three scholarships awarded annually to graduating seniors.
The Zeta Youth Auxiliary serves as a hands-on leadership laboratory where older participants plan events, lead initiatives, and model excellence for younger members. This intergenerational model complements structured workshops in financial literacy, public speaking, and college and career readiness, facilitated by professional volunteers committed to the next generation of women.
Our young ladies also participate in regional youth leadership conferences, gaining exposure to new ideas, networks, and possibilities beyond their immediate communities. Graduates consistently cite these experiences as pivotal moments in their development.
A grant of up to $5,000 from the Hermanowski Foundation will fund conference registration fees, professional attire, transportation, educational materials, facilitator stipends, and senior scholarships, ensuring every young lady has equitable access to all program opportunities regardless of financial circumstances.
Royal Doves, Inc. is cultivating confident, capable, and service-driven young women in South Florida. We are grateful for the Foundation’s consideration and its dedication to empowering children and young adults across the United States.
