Project Description:

Handy (Helping Advance and Nurture the Development of Youth, Inc.) is a children’s services organization dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged and underserved youth throughout Broward County, Florida. Handy focuses its work in high-need ZIP codes—including 33311, 33313, 33309, and 33319—where families face persistent challenges such as housing instability, food insecurity, limited access to healthcare, and elevated juvenile crime rates. Through comprehensive afterschool academic programming and wraparound supports, Handy addresses critical gaps in education, mental health services, family stabilization, food security, and access to essential resources.

Handy’s cornerstone youth enrichment model—the LIFE Program. LIFE—short for Life Skills, Independent Living, Foundation Building, and Education/Employment—is designed to empower Broward County’s most vulnerable young people by equipping them with the training, skills, mental stability, basic resources, mentorship, and confidence needed to thrive in every area of life.

LIFE Program successfully integrates 67 individual youth development initiatives across five core pillars:
• Youth Development – Life skills training, mentorship, and enrichment activities
• Workforce Development – Career readiness, job placement, and financial literacy
• Mental Health – Trauma-informed counseling and emotional resilience programs
• Housing – Transitional support and emergency housing assistance
• Education Transition Services – Academic support, scholarships, and college readiness

Together, these foundational areas form a comprehensive, holistic wraparound program designed to help Handy youth overcome systemic barriers to academic achievement, career readiness, and personal well-being. Our evidence-based model operates as a fully integrated system, delivered through individualized case management led by experienced leadership, certified counselors, and youth coaches. This inclusive, coordinated approach equips young people with the long-term skills, stability, and confidence needed to achieve independence and sustained success.

Serving more than 1,200 individuals each year, Handy’s LIFE Program provides critical, year-round support to low-income youth and foster youth living in some of Broward County’s most economically challenged communities.
