Project Title: OCOS Youth Success Initiative: Literacy, Mentorship & Life Skills Pipeline
Project Description:

The One Church One School (OCOS) Youth Success Initiative is a 6–12 month program designed to enhance literacy, mentorship, and life skills for youth ages 8–18 in the Birmingham–Jefferson County area of Alabama.

In collaboration with students from Miles College, OCOS will partner with local K–12 schools to provide structured academic support, mentorship, and personal development programming for underserved youth. This initiative builds upon OCOS’s proven model of connecting churches, schools, and communities to improve academic achievement and social development.

The program will offer weekly literacy tutoring focused on reading comprehension, academic confidence, and foundational learning skills. Students will also be paired with trained college mentors who will provide consistent guidance, encouragement, and exposure to higher education pathways. Monthly life skills workshops will focus on leadership development, communication, goal setting, and social-emotional learning.

This near-peer mentorship model allows youth to engage with college students as relatable role models, reinforcing the value of education and long-term success. Family engagement opportunities will further strengthen support systems for participating students.

The initiative is expected to serve 50–75 youth and will result in improved academic performance, increased engagement, and stronger mentorship relationships. All funds will be fully utilized within the grant period, and a formal evaluation report will be submitted upon completion.

Project Title: Send 30 New Campers to Camp Boggy Creek’s 30th Birthday Summer
Project Description:

Across Florida, thousands of children live with serious illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, sickle cell anemia, immune disorders, and epilepsy. Frequent hospital stays, exhausting treatment schedules, and medical uncertainty often disrupt childhood—causing children to miss school and milestones, leaving parents feeling isolated, and siblings feeling overlooked. Nearly 15% of children in Florida live with a chronic condition, and many experience anxiety or depression as they adjust to life‑altering diagnoses.
As Camp Boggy Creek enters its 30th summer, we are committed to reaching families who may be newly diagnosed and unaware that a medical camp like ours exists. To mark this milestone, Camp Boggy Creek is seeking 10 new funding partners to help send 30 new campers to Camp—one camper for each year of our history. These campers represent children who might otherwise never experience the joy, connection, and sense of belonging that Camp provides.
Through our free Summer Camp Sessions, children ages 7–17 enjoy horseback riding, swimming, fishing, creative activities, and lasting friendships in a medically safe and emotionally supportive environment. With 24/7 on‑site medical care tailored to each child’s needs, families can trust that their children are safe while gaining confidence, independence, and joy.
By supporting this 30th anniversary initiative, The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation will help ensure that more children and families experience not just a week of Camp, but a lasting impact—renewed hope, meaningful connection, and the chance to simply be kids again during one of the most challenging times in their lives.

After school programming builds upon a strong foundation of family programming and productive activities and provides an outlet for academic success and overall positive youth development leading to self-sufficiency. Ser Familia ensures that youth are properly registered for school and have the supplies they need, including electronic devices, and assesses other challenges. Through youth programming, the agency creates individualized plans to mitigate gaps and bolster educational success. Ser Familia’s youth programming addresses the mental health and wellbeing needs of Latino youth, which have reached crisis levels, through a family plan model that addresses the needs of all members through assessment, case management, and services. Therapeutic methods address trauma so youth can recognize it, manage it, and implement strategies to heal and become productive members of their communities. Ser Familia incorporates SPARCS (Structured Psychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress), developed in partnership with Emory University. Counseling groups meet weekly after school for therapy and support, with services provided in-person by trained clinicians. Project Title: Educating the Next Generation of Conservationists
Project Description:

The National Aviary educates people of all ages and backgrounds about birds, their habitats, the environmental pressures they face, and the role humans play in creating and mitigating these challenges. We recognize that it is our work with young minds that is essential for us to succeed at our mission. Last year, the Aviary educated nearly 26,000 students and adults through affordable, onsite and outreach programs and field trips. Of that number, 7,754 students and community members received these programs at no cost!

The Aviary’s ongoing objective is to design wildlife encounters between students, staff, and birds that inspire memorable and lasting connections with nature. Curriculum discussed during field trips to the Aviary and outreach to schools are aligned with science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics standards. The intention is that through lessons plans and interactivity with our ambassador birds, we can ignite a lifelong interest and love of science and the environment.

The need for our education programming to underserved students is boundless. The 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress—released in the fall of 2025 by the National Center for Education Statistics—shows Pennsylvania’s 4th grade math and reading scores are each 6 percentage points lower than in 2019. Scores for the state’s eighth grade students are each 4 percentage points lower than in 2019.

The Aviary provides educational programs that fill a needed gap—giving students from all backgrounds a chance to be inspired to continue a path of learning through the beauty of complexity of birds.

To meet the needs of underserved students and teachers in our area and continue this impactful program, the National Aviary respectfully requests $5,000 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to support our education program in educating the next generation of conservationists.

Project Title: Mental Health Support for Children Impacted by Parental Incarceration
Project Description:

BOSS is requesting support to promote healing from trauma for the children and youth residing at our Women & Children’s Reentry Campus (WCRC) in Oakland, California. The WCRC provides a safe landing for both single women and women with children who are coming out of prison – temporary housing with on-site support services designed to help families stabilize, address urgent needs, and begin working on reintegration plans that include housing, education, employment, health, and other goals.

The children living with their moms at WCRC have experienced multiple forms of trauma, including homelessness, foster care, family separation, substance abuse, mental illness, and domestic or community violence – Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) that create barriers to wellness and self-sufficiency well into adulthood. Academic reviews show that parental incarceration in particular significantly impacts multiple facets of child wellbeing across developmental stages. Children may struggle with internalizing and externalizing symptoms, difficulties in school, attachment challenges, and psychosocial instability.

The funds requested will be used to expand mental health support services for children at the WCRC:

• Trauma-informed group and individual counseling for children and youth, incorporating evidence-based curricula that address emotional regulation, grief, attachment challenges, and stress management.

• Child-centric therapeutic materials, including arts and play therapy supplies, age-appropriate books about family separation, resilience, coping, and developmental psychoeducation.

• In-service groups and activities through partnerships with community mental health providers for referrals when clinically appropriate.

Child mental/emotional health data will be assessed by the Case Manager during intake/enrollment when families first enter WCRC. The Case Manager will recruit both internal and external experts for the services described above, plan and organize activities, and conduct follow up assessments on mental/emotional health to ensure that children living in the WCRC receive intentional, developmentally appropriate, and evidence-based mental health supports anchored in best practices for children impacted by parental incarceration.
