Project Title: OCOS Youth Success Initiative: Literacy, Mentorship & Life Skills Pipeline
Project Description:
The One Church One School (OCOS) Youth Success Initiative is a 6–12 month program designed to enhance literacy, mentorship, and life skills for youth ages 8–18 in the Birmingham–Jefferson County area of Alabama.
In collaboration with students from Miles College, OCOS will partner with local K–12 schools to provide structured academic support, mentorship, and personal development programming for underserved youth. This initiative builds upon OCOS’s proven model of connecting churches, schools, and communities to improve academic achievement and social development.
The program will offer weekly literacy tutoring focused on reading comprehension, academic confidence, and foundational learning skills. Students will also be paired with trained college mentors who will provide consistent guidance, encouragement, and exposure to higher education pathways. Monthly life skills workshops will focus on leadership development, communication, goal setting, and social-emotional learning.
This near-peer mentorship model allows youth to engage with college students as relatable role models, reinforcing the value of education and long-term success. Family engagement opportunities will further strengthen support systems for participating students.
The initiative is expected to serve 50–75 youth and will result in improved academic performance, increased engagement, and stronger mentorship relationships. All funds will be fully utilized within the grant period, and a formal evaluation report will be submitted upon completion.
