Project Title: Latino Youth Success Initiative: Integrated Mental Health, Education, and Leadership Development
Project Description:

Ser Familia is seeking funding to support our youth programming that meets the growing social, mental health and educational needs in the community to address widening health and wellbeing gaps. Ser Familia offers out-of-school time services through holistic afterschool programming aligned with the school day, including tutoring, mentoring, physical activities, hands-on learning, life skills and career exploration, health and wellbeing sessions, and counseling, all based on evidence-based practices that are culturally and linguistically proficient. After school programming builds upon a strong foundation of family programming and productive activities and provides an outlet for academic success and overall positive youth development leading to self-sufficiency. Ser Familia ensures that youth are properly registered for school and have the supplies they need, including electronic devices, and assesses other challenges. Through youth programming, the agency creates individualized plans to mitigate gaps and bolster educational success. Ser Familia’s youth programming addresses the mental health and wellbeing needs of Latino youth, which have reached crisis levels, through a family plan model that addresses the needs of all members through assessment, case management, and services. Therapeutic methods address trauma so youth can recognize it, manage it, and implement strategies to heal and become productive members of their communities. Ser Familia incorporates SPARCS (Structured Psychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress), developed in partnership with Emory University. Counseling groups meet weekly after school for therapy and support, with services provided in-person by trained clinicians. Academic supports are available as needed following assessment and treatment planning. Ser Familia also provides leadership and prevention programming through Renovación Juvenil, helping youth resist peer pressure, avoid substance use and gangs, and build leadership skills, while engaging parents and strengthening family communication.
