Project Title: Lena’s Adventures: Foster Youth Enrichment & Literacy Support Program
Project Description:

Lena’s Adventures, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Richmond, Virginia, is seeking funding to support children in foster care by providing books by is written by me, the Founder of Lena’s Adventures, clothing, and essential supplies that promote stability, literacy, and overall well-being.

The primary objective of this project is to deliver my age-appropriate books to children involved in the foster care system. Many of these children experience disruptions in their education and lack consistent access to reading materials. This initiative will provide my books that children can begin and continue over time, helping them build literacy skills, confidence, and a sense of ownership in their learning.

In addition to books, Lena’s Adventures will provide clothing and basic supplies to children in need. Access to appropriate clothing supports self-esteem, comfort, and a sense of normalcy, which is especially important for children navigating difficult transitions.

These resources will be distributed during supervised visitation services and community-based outreach efforts. The program will also encourage reading and positive engagement during visits, allowing children and their families to share meaningful experiences through my books and structured activities.

Through this project, Lena’s Adventures aims to support both the educational and emotional needs of foster youth by providing consistent access to my books, clothing, and essential items. This effort will help create a more supportive and nurturing environment for children while reinforcing the importance of literacy, stability, and personal growth.

Project Title: Stability to Success: Meeting Basic Needs & Building Futures for At-Risk Teens
Project Description:

At the Augusta Teen Center, we serve youth who are navigating some of the most difficult challenges in central Maine—food insecurity, housing instability, trauma exposure, and limited access to consistent adult support. For many of our teens, stability is not a given. Without it, success is out of reach.

Our “Stability to Success” program meets urgent basic needs while building the skills and resilience necessary for long-term independence. Each day, teens receive nutritious meals, a safe and supervised environment, and access to trusted adult mentors. From that foundation, they engage in structured programming focused on life skills, emotional regulation, communication, and workforce readiness.

Youth participate in hands-on learning through community gardens, environmental stewardship, and service projects—gaining practical skills while contributing meaningfully to their community. At the same time, we integrate social-emotional learning and behavioral health support to help teens process stress, build confidence, and develop healthy coping strategies.

This is not a one-time intervention—it is a consistent, relationship-based model that creates real change. Teens who once struggled to attend school begin showing up. Youth who lacked direction begin planning for jobs and futures. Most importantly, they begin to see themselves as capable.

Funding will directly support meals, program materials, and staffing to ensure that vulnerable youth have daily access to stability, mentorship, and opportunity.

By meeting basic needs first, we open the door for everything that follows.

Project Title: Academic and Life Skills Learning Center
Project Description:

Every young person who walks through our doors carries the invisible weight of child abuse and neglect, often believing the devastating lie that they are destined to be written off by the world. For the foster youth with no childhood photos for a school project and the brilliant teen whom the public education system has failed, our Academic and Life Skills Program is a relentless fight for their inherent worth.

By replacing instability with a sanctuary of unconditional belief, we provide the tutoring and fierce advocacy required to close significant learning gaps. To ensure the long-term sustainability of these educational gains, Children’s Harbor has transitioned to an integrated on-site Learning Center model. This shift allows us to move beyond crisis intervention toward a stable, permanent resource for our youth.

A grant of $10,000 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation will provide the essential educational infrastructure necessary to maintain this high standard of care. By investing in these foundational resources, we ensure the program remains resilient against fluctuating state budgets.

This commitment is a life-altering intervention. We provide the tools for youth to earn academic awards and graduate, transforming once-impossible dreams into a quiet, hard-won reality. Your support ensures that this "harbor" remains a permanent fixture in South Florida, breaking the cycles of trauma forever and allowing our youth to begin healthy, educated, and productive lives.

Project Title: Newhouse Back to School Support
Project Description:

Newhouse requests support for our largest free family event, the Back To School Block Party, held annually in August. We see on average 75 children plus their grown-ups attend this event, over 150 survivors enjoying family time and receiving back to school goodies to prepare for the new school year.

At this event, Newhouse provides school supplies, backpacks, new clothing, and new shoes for every child, entertainment such as games, arts & crafts, a DJ, dunk tank, and bounce house, and food and drink for all in attendance. Past special visitors included the Chiefs cheerleaders! These experiences spark curiosity, reinforce positive values, and expose youth to resources they might not otherwise have.

Youth who experienced domestic violence are 6 times more likely to commit suicide, 50% more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, 74% more likely to commit a violent crime, and 3 times more likely to repeat the cycle in adulthood, as growing up with domestic violence is the most significant predictor of whether or not someone will engage in domestic violence later in life (Childhood Domestic Violence Association). Youth exposed to violence within their home are at an increased risk for behavior problems, health problems, learning disorders, low self-esteem, and being injured or killed (Children’s Mercy Kansas City 2025). Older children who are exposed to more serious forms of violence are more likely to be victims of multiple kinds of violence (Finkelhor et al., 2009).

Newhouse programming and interventions promote protective factors and move survivors beyond crisis, which prevents future generations from experiencing violence and/or entering the system as victims, abusers, or perpetrators of crime. Every community is affected by domestic violence – every age, race, gender, religion, and socioeconomic status. Addressing domestic violence as a community health issue creates a ripple effect of positive generational and community change.

Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Emergency Support for Minor Trafficking Victims
Project Description:

Safe House Project is seeking funding to support our Emergency Support Program, which provides crisis response, stabilization, and safe house placement to victims of human trafficking in the United States. Every year, hundreds of thousands of children and youth are trafficked in the U.S., but fewer than one percent are identified. Even those few identified victims remain at high risk, with 80% being trafficked again due to an extreme lack of access to immediate, trauma-informed care.

Minor and young adult trafficking victims face overwhelming barriers to freedom. Victims frequently experience malnutrition, untreated or inadequately treated injuries, STIs, and long-term neurological and psychological conditions as a direct result of prolonged abuse. On top of these challenges, many victims face threats of violence and retaliation if they try to escape, and most will become homeless in the process. Minor victims face additional challenges, as they often must navigate complex family dynamics, custody issues, and serious financial constraints. Without immediate, comprehensive support, very few trafficking victims are able to successfully escape exploitation.

The Emergency Support Program was designed by survivor leaders on our staff to directly dismantle these challenges. As soon as they first contact our Survivor Support Team, trafficking victims are provided with safe exit coordination, temporary shelter and transportation, basic necessities, medical care, mental and behavioral health stabilization, addiction care, and full coordination of placement in a trafficking-specific, long-term safe house program. By offering all of these services simultaneously, Safe House Project minimizes the barriers that victims face to safely and permanently escaping their traffickers, and coordinates direct access to the specialized care they need to heal.

A $10,000 grant from the Hermanowski Foundation will directly support at least 12 minor victims of trafficking as they exit exploitation, ensuring that they have real opportunities for safety, healing, and freedom.

Total Project Budget: $2,957,537

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): The national Emergency Support Program is funded through a diverse mix of private foundations, corporate partners, individual donors, and state and city governments. To date, $1,078,637 has been committed toward our total $2,957,537 program budget, with $1,900,400 in submitted proposals pending decision.

Project Title: Fearless Conversations to Prevent Youth Suicide
Project Description:

The Liv Project’s mission is to create innovative tools that spark fearless conversations, empowering families and communities to prevent youth suicide. The Project began work in 2021 in memory of Liv, a vibrant 19-year-old whose life was impacted by mental health challenges. After her passing, her family wanted to share her story to encourage open discussion about mental health and to remind others they are not alone in their struggles. The topic of suicide is often surrounded by fear, which can prevent people from seeking or offering help. By sharing their experience, The Liv Project hopes to inspire fearless conversations–recognizing the fear but engaging anyway–as these discussions can be life-saving.

The Liv Project is building a movement that uses art, engagement, and fearless conversations to challenge the silence and break the stigma and has engaged with youth and mental health professionals to ensure tools are age-appropriate, sensitive to youth mental health challenges, and appealing to young people across a wide spectrum. The Project developed THE GAME THAT GOES THERE®, a fun conversation game that promotes connection and empathy as it prompts players to openly share and go THERE–to the feelings and thoughts many would rather not share–with the idea that the more people go there, the less scary and stigmatized it becomes. Using THE GAME THAT GOES THERE® cards as prompts, The Liv Project designs custom CREATIVE WORKSHOPS where participants interact and build meaningful connections while creating art. Connection to others through this creative outlet establishes a strong foundation for overall well-being, acting as a protective factor against negative health outcomes like mental health issues and substance use, and promoting resilience, social-emotional skills, and academic success. The Liv Project is working to empower youth to build healthier, more connected lives and ultimately reduce the occurrence of youth suicide.

Project Title: Empowering Youth Champions
Project Description:

The Piast Institute, a National Institute for Polish and Polish American Affairs, requests funding to maintain youth programming and operational capacity in light of losing a significant federal funding source, the Drug Free Communities (DFC) grant. This will ensure that youth prevention activities are effectively implemented and culturally tailored to Hamtramck’s diverse community via the Hamtramck Drug Free Community Coalition (HDFCC). The HDFCC, a program of the Piast Institute, a local and nationally recognized 501 C 3 nonprofit, is a community-based prevention initiative dedicated to reducing youth substance misuse and promoting wellness among Hamtramck’s diverse population. Founded in 2007, one objective of the HDFCC is to strengthen protective factors for youth and implement evidence-based strategies that address local risk factors identified through data collection and surveying. HDFCC aims to reduce underage drinking, vaping, and drug use while promoting positive decision making skills and healthy alternatives for youth engagement. This funding would aid in the goal of supplementing youth programming activities, directly addressing the target population with the provision of alternative activities or opportunities to engage in safe and healthy activities that exclude substance use. Beyond this, the funding would offer the target population a means to also “be a kid” through the continued and expanded provision of bonding activities, games, field trips, etc. Opportunities to “be a kid” was a direct request made by Hamtramck youth as a better means to address anxieties and stressors, which have been further exacerbated by the stigmatization of immigrants and uncertainty surrounding their futures. Anticipated outcomes include sustained measurable reductions in reported youth substance use, increased participation in prevention and education programs, and stronger partnerships among community organizations and residents. The HDFCC seeks to create a lasting impact by empowering youth, supporting families, and cultivating a safer, healthier environment for all residents within Hamtramck.

Project Title: Children’s Program for Homeless Youth
Project Description:

Bridge Communities serves families with children who are experiencing homelessness and live and work in DuPage County, Illinois – a suburban area west of Chicago. Bridge provides stable housing and comprehensive services for the whole family for approximately two years. Bridge focuses on a two-generation approach for breaking the cycle of poverty by addressing the needs of both parents and children.

Each incoming child is assessed for met and unmet needs and is assigned a case manager that creates a personalized plan to help children overcome the trauma of homelessness. Depending on the needs of each child, Bridge provides academic tutoring, scholarships for recreational activities and camps, developmental assessments, assistance with securing childcare, and enrichment programming. Case managers also connect children and their families to community resources such as mental health counseling, Early Intervention, and physical health care. Bridge parents benefit tremendously from having Children’s Program staff alongside them, listening to their concerns, and helping them learn about their children’s development relative to benchmarks.

The goals of the Children’s Program are that all children are on normal developmental tracks, achieving at grade level or above, learning the coping skills to deal with trauma, and have access to enriching experiences. Ultimately, the goal is that children born into poverty and homelessness break the cycle and do not experience these things as adults. Our longitudinal study of alumni from the past 30 years has shown us our program has impacted two generations within a family: 83% of alumni parents reported that their children are in meaningful relationships with peers and 75% reported that their children are engaged in challenging education programs and growing academically.
