Project Title: Newhouse Back to School Support
Project Description:
Newhouse requests support for our largest free family event, the Back To School Block Party, held annually in August. We see on average 75 children plus their grown-ups attend this event, over 150 survivors enjoying family time and receiving back to school goodies to prepare for the new school year.
At this event, Newhouse provides school supplies, backpacks, new clothing, and new shoes for every child, entertainment such as games, arts & crafts, a DJ, dunk tank, and bounce house, and food and drink for all in attendance. Past special visitors included the Chiefs cheerleaders! These experiences spark curiosity, reinforce positive values, and expose youth to resources they might not otherwise have.
Youth who experienced domestic violence are 6 times more likely to commit suicide, 50% more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, 74% more likely to commit a violent crime, and 3 times more likely to repeat the cycle in adulthood, as growing up with domestic violence is the most significant predictor of whether or not someone will engage in domestic violence later in life (Childhood Domestic Violence Association). Youth exposed to violence within their home are at an increased risk for behavior problems, health problems, learning disorders, low self-esteem, and being injured or killed (Children’s Mercy Kansas City 2025). Older children who are exposed to more serious forms of violence are more likely to be victims of multiple kinds of violence (Finkelhor et al., 2009).
Newhouse programming and interventions promote protective factors and move survivors beyond crisis, which prevents future generations from experiencing violence and/or entering the system as victims, abusers, or perpetrators of crime. Every community is affected by domestic violence – every age, race, gender, religion, and socioeconomic status. Addressing domestic violence as a community health issue creates a ripple effect of positive generational and community change.
