Project Title: Journey & Voyage Program 2026
Project Description:

Chicago Voyagers (CV)’s mission is to empower youth impacted by injustices through adventure therapy programs that foster physical and mental well-being, healthy relationships, and skills for life success. Our programs consist of half-day to multi-day recreational excursions utilizing therapeutic programming and trauma-informed care, covering a broad range of activities that build confidence and inspire trust, persistence, compassion, and teamwork. Activities include canoeing, camping, rock climbing, hiking, bicycling, and backpacking, among others. Teens concurrently engage in emotional challenges designed to enhance self-esteem and build self-sufficiency, while regularly receiving outdoor and conservation education. Our year-round programming and all materials are offered at no cost to participants.

Journeys engage the same group of students for six months or more for outdoor adventure therapy activities. Our staff mentor each student individually, helping them set goals, achieve success, and support each other. The Voyage program builds on Journey, guiding the same group of ten students throughout their middle school and high school years through outdoor adventure therapy activities. Voyages begin with day-long adventures, working up to occasional overnight excursions and culminating in an annual wilderness expedition. Our Voyage program recently received multi-year seed funding, demonstrating strong signs of its sustainability and impact, as well as leading to increased support from our existing funders.

Each of our Journey and Voyage programs uses a multi-faceted, neuroscience-based approach to prevent or diminish the impact of adverse childhood experiences, harnessing the outdoors as a tool for helping youth of color and low-income youth develop the critical skills needed to reach their full potential. 100% of CV participants are taken out of their neighborhoods and into natural green spaces to challenge themselves physically and emotionally while cultivating a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors.

Project Title: Building the Next Generation of Solution-Oriented Mappers
Project Description:

TeenMaptivists introduces high school students to geography, data, and GeoSTEM technologies through humanitarian-focused OpenStreetMap activism. With the support of partners, including the Henry Luce Foundation and the Trimble Foundation, AGS launched a successful pilot from January to June 2024 and again in September to December across five U.S. high schools. As of Spring 2025, the program is currently active in 20 schools across 11 states– including Coral Reef Senior High School in Miami, FL.

The program empowers students to develop spatial reasoning, critical thinking, and leadership skills while mapping real-world humanitarian needs. Only 25% of U.S. students perform at or above proficiency in geography, and women represent just 2–5% of OpenStreetMap contributors. TeenMaptivists addresses this gap by engaging students in data-driven problem solving, boosting STEM interest and spatial literacy while directly contributing to humanitarian outcomes.

TeenMaptivists equips youth with the skills to understand, visualize, and respond to real-world challenges—like disaster relief, public health, and social justice—filling a critical gap in education by connecting STEM learning with civic engagement. In a world increasingly shaped by data and global interdependence,TeenMaptivists transforms learning into action, inspiring youth to lead with empathy, data, and purpose.

Grant funds will support AGS in expanding the program from 150 to 1,750 students across 50 high schools nationwide. Specific activities include marketing to AP Human Geography teachers, organizing monthly mapping modules and mapathons, establishing regional teacher advisors, and supporting peer mentorship from undergraduate YouthMappers.

TeenMaptivists is essential to diversifying the future of GeoSTEM, increasing student engagement with geographic knowledge, and fostering digital global citizenship. To learn more, visit www.teenmaptivists.org.

Project Title: Back to School PBC! 2026
Project Description:

We respectfully request your consideration of support for Back to School PBC! in 2026. This project alleviates material needs and improves self-esteem for 11,000+ at-risk youth annually by providing essential K-12 school supplies, hygiene products, and health services. This initiative helps at-risk children have more equal access to resources with their peers while reducing financial stress for their families.

Back to School PBC! is held at Village Academy in Delray Beach in July each year. With your support and that of 50+ community partners, children receive:

backpacks
grade-appropriate school supplies
new shoes
socks
uniform shirts
haircuts
school physicals
nutritious lunch & snacks
feminine hygiene products
hygiene products
important community resources

To distribute these items, we partner with 60+ local nonprofit agencies who refer at-risk youth. Children receive personalized invitations, and their registration information helps us order appropriate quantities of grade-specific school supplies, sizes of clothing and shoes, and hygiene kits with gender-appropriate supplies. During the event, children are paired with a "personal shopping" volunteer, who walks with them through our gymnasium full of supplies to help them select items best suited for their age, grade, size, gender, and specific needs. We also partner with area healthcare providers including Boca Raton Regional Hospital, South University, and more to provide free school physicals, health screenings, mammograms, and health referrals. These services are especially important for the LMI and at-risk families we serve, many of whom do not see doctors regularly.

Back to School PBC! serves 11,000+ children from low-income households, homeless, at-risk of homelessness or in foster care in Palm Beach County. Approximately 75% of the children qualify for Medicaid, 15% have private insurance and 10% have no insurance.  Ninety-eight percent of the recipients qualify for free or reduced school lunch.  We also assist children with special needs.

Total Project Budget: $296,354

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): In a typical year, Back to School PBC! is funded 54% by Palm Beach County and Children’s Services Council, 25% by individual and corporate donations, and 21% by grants. We are grateful for the committed support of The Schmidt Family Foundation, The Jim Moran Foundation, The Vegso Family Foundation, Boca West Children’s Foundation, Florida Blue Foundation, The Batchelor Foundation, and more. As the number of students served through this program increased by 1,000 last year, and we expect this trend to continue, we are working to build new community partnerships to help us meet the need. We hope to soon count The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation among our community partners working together to achieve better outcomes for Palm Beach County’s underserved youth.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/31/25
Requested Amount: 3,000

Project Title: Summer Challenge Series
Project Description:

Invent the Summer is committed to addressing critical gaps in STEM education by providing hands-on learning experiences that inspire curiosity, build confidence, and develop problem-solving skills, especially among children from underserved communities. Research consistently shows that early exposure to STEM plays a pivotal role in shaping children’s interest and long-term success in these fields. Yet, many children face significant barriers—financial, logistical, and social—that limit their access to out-of-school STEM programs. These barriers disproportionately impact children in low-income and underrepresented communities, deepening existing inequities and reducing opportunities for future success in STEM.
At Invent the Summer, we believe every child should have access to enriching STEM activities during the summer, which is why our challenges are entirely free. To keep challenges and workshops free and accessible, we rely on the generosity of funders like the Hermanowski Family Foundation. This grant will support the costs of our Summer Challenge Series which includes prizes, video editing technology, postage and shipping for awards, and point trackers, to name a few.
Our weekly challenges being in June, but our Junior and Senior Board of Engineers have already been hard at work designing and filming these challenges. We anticipate having significantly more participation in our virtual challenges this summer from both individual participants and camp groups. This means more prizes, point trackers, and time dedicated to judging contest entries. Your support will mean we can reach even more participants with free and fun STEM activities!

Total Project Budget: 15,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, Henkel, other Family Foundations

Project Duration: The Summer Challenge Series runs for 8 weeks beginning in June each summer. Prep work for the challenges begins in March.
Geographical Area Served: The majority of our participants live in CT or MA, but our virtual platforms means participants can join the challenge from anywhere in the world!
Age Group To Be Served: Challenges are designed for children 12 and under. Past participants in 7th – 12th grade can join our Junior and Senior Boards of Engineers, where they design future challenges and lead the organization.

Today’s Date: March 31, 2025
Requested Amount: $7300

Project Title: Pepin Academies
Project Description:

Pepin Academies-Pasco is a not-for-profit, Title 1, public charter school in Pasco County, Florida, serving students with learning disabilities since its opening in 2014. Pepin Academies-Pasco’s mission is to empower students with learning disabilities to maximize their potential in a positive therapeutic educational environment. Our students represent a diverse range of disabilities, cognitive levels, and cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

After chartering our school in Pasco County in 2014, Pepin Academies Pasco relocated to its “forever home” – a 14-acre campus in New Port Richey, Florida – in January 2021. The original flagpole on the site did not survive the construction and was destroyed by an excavator. We are seeking a grant to support the installation of a new flagpole, measuring 20’ to 25’, on our campus. The total cost of the pole, lighting, flags (national and state), installation, landscaping, and other related expenses is approximately $7,300.00. Our goal is to have the pole erected and celebrated during our annual Veterans Day Program in November, when we honor the Veterans associated with our school and the community. Should the Hermanowski Family Foundation decide to fund this project, a memorial plaque will be installed on the flagpole to acknowledge their support.

The flying of the American flag serves as a visible symbol of the freedom and justice we are afforded as citizens of America. While all our classrooms have American flags to which we pledge allegiance every morning, the installation of the flagpole on campus will stand as a monument to our commitment to freedom as a school. All students attending our school will benefit from the flag installation for years to come. As our facility is also used for community events, the broader community will also benefit from the visibility of the flag on campus.

Total Project Budget: $7300

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 31,2025
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Educating the Next Generation of Conservationists
Project Description:

The National Aviary educates people of all ages and backgrounds about birds, their habitats, the environmental pressures they face, and the role humans play in creating and mitigating these challenges. We recognize that it is our work with young minds that is essential for us to succeed at our mission. Last year, the Aviary educated more than 26,000 students through affordable, onsite and outreach programs and field trips, with one-third of those programs being provided to under-resourced students and educators at no cost.

The Aviary’s ongoing objective is to design wildlife encounters between students, staff, and birds that inspire memorable and lasting connections with nature. Curriculum discussed during field trips to the Aviary and outreach to schools are aligned with science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics standards. The intention is that through lessons plans and interactivity with our ambassador birds, we can ignite a lifelong interest and love of science and the environment.

The need for our education programming to underserved students is great. While Pennsylvania students remain slightly above the national average for reading and math scores, results from the nation’s “report card,” administered by the National Assessment of Educational Progress, underline the ongoing aftershocks of pandemic learning disruptions.

Pennsylvania fourth graders tested—kindergartners at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic—scored lower in both reading and math than fourth graders tested in 2019. Student scores across nearly all racial groups continued to demonstrate struggles to recover student learning, although White student scores still outpaced that of their Black student peers.

To meet the needs of underserved students and teachers in our area and continue this impactful program, the National Aviary respectfully requests $5,000 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to support our National Aviary Education Program.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 30, 2025
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: The Heartbeat Music Project Summer Academy
Project Description:

The Heartbeat Music Project offers tuition-free music and cultural education to youth living on Navajo Nation. Our program serves Diné children ages 5-18 in Crownpoint, New Mexico, breaking down barriers that typically make music education inaccessible in this region.
We request $10,000 to support our Summer Academy:
$6,000 teacher stipends
$1,500 for teacher travel and accommodation
$2,000 for student transportation and meals
$500 for essential program supplies
Our two-week Summer Academy is an intensive program serving 60 students with daily private lessons, ensemble rehearsals, music theory instruction, and Diné cultural workshops. Students receive individualized attention while working toward multiple community performances that showcase their growth. The program provides a rare opportunity for rural Navajo students to immerse themselves in music education due to a number of barriers preventing them from accessing such opportunities.
Due to the remote, rural nature of Crownpoint and surrounding communities, qualified music instructors must travel significant distances to reach our students. Our teaching team combines local talent with graduates from prestigious programs including Columbia, Yale and Juilliard. Additionally, many families live miles from the program site with limited transportation options. This funding ensures we can bring talented teachers to this underserved area while helping students overcome transportation barriers and food insecurity. Providing daily meals addresses food scarcity in the region, ensuring students can fully engage in learning.
We partner with Navajo Technical University, which provides space including their traditional Hogan structure and surrounding classrooms. This collaboration strengthens community ties and creates a supportive environment for student growth.
The Hermanowski Foundation’s support would ensure a successful 2026 Summer Academy for approximately 60 students, allowing us to compensate our dedicated instructors fairly and provide the resources necessary for student success. By investing in music education honoring cultural heritage, we empower Diné youth to develop skills, confidence, and stronger connections to their community.
