Project Title: Educating the Next Generation of Conservationists
Project Description:

The National Aviary educates people of all ages and backgrounds about birds, their habitats, the environmental pressures they face, and the role humans play in creating and mitigating these challenges. We recognize that it is our work with young minds that is essential for us to succeed at our mission. Last year, the Aviary educated more than 26,000 students through affordable, onsite and outreach programs and field trips, with one-third of those programs being provided to under-resourced students and educators at no cost.

The Aviary’s ongoing objective is to design wildlife encounters between students, staff, and birds that inspire memorable and lasting connections with nature. Curriculum discussed during field trips to the Aviary and outreach to schools are aligned with science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics standards. The intention is that through lessons plans and interactivity with our ambassador birds, we can ignite a lifelong interest and love of science and the environment.

The need for our education programming to underserved students is great. While Pennsylvania students remain slightly above the national average for reading and math scores, results from the nation’s “report card,” administered by the National Assessment of Educational Progress, underline the ongoing aftershocks of pandemic learning disruptions.

Pennsylvania fourth graders tested—kindergartners at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic—scored lower in both reading and math than fourth graders tested in 2019. Student scores across nearly all racial groups continued to demonstrate struggles to recover student learning, although White student scores still outpaced that of their Black student peers.

To meet the needs of underserved students and teachers in our area and continue this impactful program, the National Aviary respectfully requests $5,000 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to support our National Aviary Education Program.
