Project Title: Building the Next Generation of Solution-Oriented Mappers
Project Description:
TeenMaptivists introduces high school students to geography, data, and GeoSTEM technologies through humanitarian-focused OpenStreetMap activism. With the support of partners, including the Henry Luce Foundation and the Trimble Foundation, AGS launched a successful pilot from January to June 2024 and again in September to December across five U.S. high schools. As of Spring 2025, the program is currently active in 20 schools across 11 states– including Coral Reef Senior High School in Miami, FL.
The program empowers students to develop spatial reasoning, critical thinking, and leadership skills while mapping real-world humanitarian needs. Only 25% of U.S. students perform at or above proficiency in geography, and women represent just 2–5% of OpenStreetMap contributors. TeenMaptivists addresses this gap by engaging students in data-driven problem solving, boosting STEM interest and spatial literacy while directly contributing to humanitarian outcomes.
TeenMaptivists equips youth with the skills to understand, visualize, and respond to real-world challenges—like disaster relief, public health, and social justice—filling a critical gap in education by connecting STEM learning with civic engagement. In a world increasingly shaped by data and global interdependence,TeenMaptivists transforms learning into action, inspiring youth to lead with empathy, data, and purpose.
Grant funds will support AGS in expanding the program from 150 to 1,750 students across 50 high schools nationwide. Specific activities include marketing to AP Human Geography teachers, organizing monthly mapping modules and mapathons, establishing regional teacher advisors, and supporting peer mentorship from undergraduate YouthMappers.
TeenMaptivists is essential to diversifying the future of GeoSTEM, increasing student engagement with geographic knowledge, and fostering digital global citizenship. To learn more, visit www.teenmaptivists.org.
